Dynamic lights

Picked up an old project to add some new features. Most of the changes are purely for performance, so they're not at all visible. I did get some more lighting effects set up:

Move the mouse around to move the light location.

Note: I know the shadow's position and transparency isn't perfect.

I can sorta figure out where the mouse is. Is it somewhat in front of the model?

If it's near an edge of the screen, the light should be directly to that side of the model. If it's near the middle, the light will move to be more in front of the model (instead of passing through the model itself)

Simple, yet pretty amazing.

And is that some kind of a Mailoc model in there? :P

wait, wouldn't it be better if the shadow becomes fainter the farther you move out, not the other way around? But that might be nitpicking.

Is that all actionscript?

Is that software rendering? I ask because the context menus for DirectX/OpenGL selection which I usually see for 3d stuff is missing (maybe I'm thinking of Shockwave/Director embedded stuff instead of Flash).

Shadow on the bottom should change direction, not transparency, when the light is moved further down. :(

It's entirely software, no hardware acceleration is available through flash. I wouldn't really be showcasing anything important if I were using DirectX or OpenGL to display it.

See my last post. I just threw the shadow together quickly, it's not even close to being accurate.

Not sure how much you've done/are planning to do, but right now the shadow doesn't stretch when you hold it closer to the horizontal. (think of the setting sun making your shadow really long)

Honestly people. I know. It's not a true projection yet. The transparency doesn't make sense. It will get fixed.

:p you just mentioned position and transparency, not stretching :p

So should I assume the only thing we should actually bother commenting on is the lighting on the model itself?

I don't know if you realise, but the shadows don't stretch properly when you move the mouse up and down.

Murc, I think you should just ignore us for a little bit, as we clearly aren't sure what you want us to comment on ;)

Very nicely done. :awesome: Any plans for texture mapping?
