Realistic Forest

Heyhey.

Been working hard on some Crysis stuff, and I realized I haven't submitted any of it here. lol

So before you say "What am I looking at? All I see is Crysis' beautiful shaders" (lmao Grismath... it was grismath right?) I'd just like to tell you before hand that every vegetation model asides from the ferns/broken trees/ground leaves were modelled, textured, and converted to the engine by yours truly. THEN it went to vegetation placement/particle editing/creation and the overall design. Pretty much a good 90% of the map is custom content.

Anyway, here's some shots.

That is really, really awesome. Very realistic looking.

As long as you can still discern flat sheets and textures with alpha maps, you'll fall short of perfection.

Spend an extra triangle here and there to make even a single leaf not follow the curvature of the 'fan'.

That looks awesome. One small nitpick with the mushrooms though- you have them scattered around randomly, coming out of the ground. Mushrooms usually grow on decaying trees and vegetation. The look of the forest would be perfect, absolutely perfect if you modeled a few rotten stumps and fallen trees and had the mushroom coming out of them.
2009-01-30, 10:30 PM #6
Yeah. I removed the mushrooms because:

- They're from Crysis (forgot to list those ones).
- They look like junk.
- People keep telling me stuff like that.

Though the mushrooms around here do grow from the ground lol

Wow that detail is just amazing. Especially on the rocks. The flowers look the least real and I can't even describe why. I just think they look odd.
2009-02-02, 11:35 AM #18
Probably because they're pretty flat.

I'll fix them up right now. :)

Man the closest tree on the first pic looks kind of iffy compared to the rest. Otherwise, neato torpedo

Yeah, that is probably why. Can't wait to see the update.

Holy hell it's been a while since I've updated.

I'm actually uploading new shots now, but I may as well show some oldies.

Been some improvements since those, but yeah, :)

The rest here.

Before you get critical, yes, the placements have been fixed on the plants in the pathway.

Sorry about the incredible size. Crymod scales the images into the thread for me. Massassi don't...

As for you JM, if I increase the polies any more my computer will choke, die, then explode into a billion pieces, then die again, then be shipped off to your mailbox so you can replace my parts. :P

It's minor, and maybe I'm the only one to notice it, but some of these trees maybe should be rotated some?

Is there a dude crouching and big tortoise in the last picture?
2009-02-12, 5:31 PM #28
The dude wants turtle soup for dinner, but the tortoise gave him the slip!

The lighting in the Crysis engine blows my mind. How does it calculate the shadows for the leaves? Surely it's not clipping the light against the alpha map of the leaves, that would be way too intensive. I guess it's some sort of heuristic?

2009-02-16, 9:33 AM #32
It could just have a 'shadow texture' that it blends onto the ground. The shadows don't have to match the leaves, the splotches of light and shadow just have to be in the right spot.
2009-02-16, 9:53 AM #33
That last picture is awesome. I want to go there right now. Can you do a snowy forest?
2009-02-16, 10:47 AM #34
It does the shadows like most other games, except it jitters the edges and blurs them instead of leaving them pixelated. Jittering is basically spreading the edge pixels all over to create a soft look.

It then is required by the mapper to generate "terrain ambient occlusion" while making the terrain texture, to darken the darker parts of the forest and give it more shadow tones. :D

I have a snowy forest but it's not so great because it's like, my first map, but it's alright:

It's called a penumbra.
2009-02-16, 2:45 PM #36
Penumbras only exist with placed lights in Crysis, not the sun.

Here's what I mean by shadow jittering,

You can see the shadows edges become fuzzy and grainy. It spreads out the edge pixels to create the soft shadows - that's not the GIF compression, it actually does that. You can also see that the shadows don't overlap each other - they're one single shade.

The terrain occlusion is to create darker areas to look like penumbras, and help reduce that while in forest areas,

Indoors, you have to calculate RAM maps, Real-Time Ambient Occlusion maps,

Just to show you the difference with SSAO.

Too bad RAM maps are a bit buggy.

;)

no I mean it's called a penumbra in real life
2009-02-16, 3:18 PM #38
f*** crysis is awesome. :gonk:
DO NOT WANT.
2009-02-16, 4:45 PM #39
While the level itself looks cool I don't think that Crysis does snow very well. :( Not a dig at your editing. The other stuff looks awesome. Making realistic snow I would imagine being a pretty tough thing to do.
