The trees on the last screenshot look too posterized. Take away some of the black outlines all over them and it'll look better. Maybe something in between your plain and detailed stage would be best.

What you have now is very straining to look at. There's too much posterization, as mentioned. The contrast is too sharp.

I really doubt that when things are finished there will be that many trees together on screen at the same time. The main problem is that it looks repetitive there, but the cartoony one will look just as repetitive. I like the old school look and it looks spot on. Reminds me a bit of Landstalker.

Also in-game it's fullscreen at 320*240. I could probably smooth out the dithering a bit though.
