Yeah so I doubt anyone apart from mb noticed that the other thread I made in October hasn't really progressed, but that project is on the backburner for another little while. In the mean time here goes a strat build! :awesome:

Specs:

2 piece Swamp Ash body
Maple/Maple WD Music Neck: C profile, 12" radius
GFS American Vintage spaced tremolo
Set of 3 Rock Monkey Guitars handwound single coil pickups
Gotoh 381 tuners
TUSQ nut
A multitude of Axetec Electronics!

Actually, I was wondering about your jazzmaster. How come you're using a 12" radius? Is that what you like to play?

It's what I'm used to but its also partly because this is being put together out of fairly cheap bits. The neck might be replaced some time in the future. :P I'm still hunting for a 9.5" radius neck with a rosewood fretboard for the Jazzmaster but its tough to find one that isn't overpriced or pants.

Yessir; the plan is either an alcohol based stain or I mix up a tinted clearcoat [most likely a translucent blue polyurethane] which would make it easier for refinishing. Also there isnt a real likelyhood of it drying streaky like with a stain. :neckbeard:

I know this "expression" is old but Dude that is f***ing tight. You got some craftmanship there, and I bet you can jam pretty good to. I have always wanted a flying V guitar like what Eddie Van Halen played.

Look on one of their Albums covers or concert images. I should know I grew up when Van Halen became popular, and I didn't ask for your corrections anyway.

Unfortunately it's still a collection of bits and a slab of wood. About a week after I made the thread for it uni started to really kick my arse and it's just starting to wind down just now.

This one is sort of part "YAY STRAT" and sort of part "Lets do this first so theres less chance of ****ing the Jazz!". :P

Well I guess your right in a way, He did play a Flying V at one time, but briefly. I should of mentioned the red one with stripes all over. I noticed that was more commonly used. btw: I didnt know that he played a custom Kramer.

Small update time!

So I had to remove those 2 studs from the body seeing as I didn't want a Floyd Rose on this so I attacked it with gusto! Basically the plan was to drop a small piece of metal into the bushing and then screw the pivot pins in. This is the way that many people would usually remove the studs as they just rise straight out of the body, but I ended up with a bushing with a small piece of metal embedded into the wood under it. ;_;

Trying to pull them out with a meaty set of plier ended with the studs crumbling away so in the end I drilled them out. Unfortunately dowel doesn't come in 13mm diameters, and drill bits don't really come in 15mm in B&Q so I had to use 12mm dowel and then fill the small gaps around the plugs I made. Here's everything sanded flush and some sanding done to the body. I've almost got all of the little scratches out of the wood. :D

I can't go faster when I need to buy a new bridge. The one I had is a regular vintage style strat bridge and it won't cover the slight gap thats been taken out of the treble side of the tremolo route. :(

After spending endless hours sanding last Sunday, the body has been done to about 320 grit and every little imperfection I could find has been eradicated apart from one very odd spot on the lower horn that looks like a patch has ben ripped out and then glued back in. The weird thing is that the grain pattern matches exactly so I'm not entirely sure what it is.

Rubbed down with white spirit to try and get rid of any oil from my hands etc, also to make any imperfections jump out and it looks ****ing kickass.

Then I grainfilled it earlier on, but my sister called me just before I applied the filler and my phone died afterwards so no photos of that. But here's the jar of stuff I whipped up to use. :P

I think I put the grainfiller on a little thick but it appears to be doing the job.

Once it had tried a little I removed some of the excess by going across the grain with a trusty old outdated Student Union card. Macca is shocked by this. :P

Time has passed, regular things have happened, bad things have happened and bad things have been sanded off and rectified! :neckbeard:

So grainfiller was applied and sanded off before it was hung up and sprayed with sanding sealer. Yay!

Here's a shot of my "test piece" thats an old plywood bass from years back that I never bothered restoring. Mostly because it turned out to be plywood. It was probably silly testing on ply when my actual body is swamp ash but I work with what I have.

I was happy enough with the shade of blue to start with seeing as the sanding sealer should have made it appear a little darker. So on we go to spraying.

DISASTER! Horrible awful patchy absorbtion by the shellac due to some rushing on my part and probably some dodgy sanding. Whatever shall I do to solve this problem?

Well obviously I just attacked it with some sandpaper and removed all the shellac. Thanks to what I'm guessing was my dodgy sanding before the dye was absorbed more in certain areas and managed to penetrate the actual wood and some of the grainfiller which isn't something I particularly wanted.

It's not quite as pretty as it was but the eventual state I got it to was definately workable. Some extreme tinting was done to a new batch of sealer and some testing was done on the bas... *ahem* I mean "test piece". :D

Yeah I was a little overzealous was the spray and it ran a little but I'll level all that off with some sanding once it's dry and see how another coat looks. :D

So earlier I was using a little steel wool to prep the finish for clearing, but couldn't find anything with a magnet in it in the house to pick up the little metal scraps, so for once I got to use my basic knowledge of standard grade physics. :D

So today I had my first go at wetsanding ever; It went ok but I ended up with a tiny, tiny sandthrough by the jack routing. Bollocks. Oh well it doesn't go past the screw hole for the jackplate so it'll be covered. Here's 2 cans of clear and another 3 coats for a total of six.

I bought all the hardware apart from that bridge ages ago from different places. I got the pickups 2nd hand off a gear section on another forum, everything else from WD Music, Axetec, ebay etc.
