Some black and white portraits

So. For school I had to do a weekly charcoal portrait. For that I gathered my own material to work off of. Here are the results.

Charcoal literally, or do you mean black and white?

These are the black and white photos I took for literal charcoal portraits I did for my class, which I don't feel comfortable posting.

well, if you ever do feel comfortable showing your drawings, would love to see them! however, looks like you got some great shots to work from. they have great contrast and look like they would be fun to do in charcoal.

I might scan some in tomorrow, two of them didn't turn out half bad. The charcoal I was using wasn't very forgiving so there ended up being a lot of un-erasable gray undertones on the other pictures. This was my first time photographing portraits, the girls I asked were just classmates or friends I knew had prior experience modeling. I have to say, it's been a good way to set aside a time outside of the classroom to get to know some of them better. If you have a camera and an attractive friend or acquaintance you want to know better ask them if they have modeled before. Getting to know them a little prior to asking would be a good idea. Like over the course of a few weeks talking to them semi-regularly.

I think the real question is, who's the chick and did you score? :P

Well, there are 3 different women up there. I don't know how you make points, but I have gone out with 1 or 3 of them. :awesome:

I like her tattoo in the third picture. Is that the whole thing or is there more off frame?

That's the whole thing and her only tattoo. It's her initials which are also an elephant. Why an Elephant? I don't know.

If the paper was smaller or my scanner was bigger I would have done this sooner. But here they are.

Nice!

I have nothing constructive to say, sorry. :(

That's fine. I'm pretty aware of the mistakes on these, which is why I hesitated so long to post them. I figure next time I'll be more careful with proportions and cleaner charcoal.

Great stuff. You chose to draw only two of the girls from the OP photos?

Wow, they are VERY well done. i really like the nose on the second one for some reason... lol. looks like there is a little issue with proportions on the first one, but honestly its still within the range that the model could have just had some oddly shaped features. unless you compared it to original photo or your setting out to critique you probably wouldn't notice.

overall though i quite like them :)

Thanks, Alran. Perspective was generally the issue with each drawing. I slapped together some comparisons because I wanted to see how far off I was, which will hopefully help identify what to focus on when I try it again. Koobie, I drew all three girls, though the results for the model from second picture in the OP was terrible. The foreshortening from the upward angle of her face skewed all of her proportions. Thanks for the input, guys. Here are the comparisons, which make the perspective and proportion errors all the more obvious.

I like the last one best. You even managed to make her prettier than she is IRL.

But they are all very good.
