Thread: Incorrect normal - surface must be invalid!

Incorrect normal - surface must be invalid!

This is a problem that shows up in JED when I try to make a cone out of any polygon (i just highlight all the vertexes on one side and give them all the same coords)

ok, I know what's causeing this- It's mad because it expects there to be a surface there, but all the vertecies for that surface are in one place, giving the surface a value of 0. What I'm wondering is...
will this cause problems, or can I leave it?
is there a way to get rid of this problem? (I can't delete any vertecies or the surface itself, I tried.) maybe a suggested on a different way to make a cone out of a 16 sided sector?

    thanks

I believe there is a tut on Massassi dealing with domes, the techniques dicussed tranlate nicely into cones.

I used to believe that we only want what we can't have. I was wrong. The truth is, the wonderful truth is, we only want what we think we can't have.

To deal with it, delete the surface and murge the verticies.

Select the surface and press Alt+I (Invert Surface), will resolve the error message. I ran into this recently and just thought I'd post a possible resolution as I found this thread when googling the issue. Now, this might not work in all cases as far as actually fixing the issue with the surface. You may have to delete and rebuilt the surface by selecting the vertices and using Alt+B.
