So I was reading the latest Penny Arcade, which alerted me to the recent IGN/Gamespy merger. Upon reading the article at IGN, and then the one at Gamespy, it looks like the whole point of this merger is for bragging rights about who has the biggest network of crappy gaming sites in the world.

The only tangible change appears to be that advertisements that were once shown exclusively at IGN will now also be shown at Gamespy, and vice versa. And both sites are acting like they're doing us a gigantic favor, something to be celebrated.

Gaming should have stayed underground- on fansites with little animated torch gifs and plain black backgrounds. At least back then there was hope of actually downloading something without having to wait in line at Fileplanet, and you could read informative articles written by true gamers without paying for them.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I see a gaming site is affiliated with a network my initial reaction is crap-until-proven-good. Independent sites tend to have much better content.

Until they gobble up everything and every file on the internet related to gaming is hosted by fileplanet.

IGN used to be great? They make you pay to see their lousy game walkthroughs... I haven't clicked on any IGN link returned from a Google search for at least a year.

Dudes, why is it that you hate waiting in line, it is done so you know that their server is full instead of down. they say that in the "why do i have to wait in line" question. Also what is this about only having one download going on at a specifc time when a download is going on from fileplanet. I never had a problem like that.

read: most 30k files are easy to find if the author has thier own website. Maby if you were less anti windows you would have the software to run demo discs and get patches. mods and levels there.

I can remember quite a few times, following "download now" links from some dude's web page, trying to download a mod for this or that, and being taken straight to Fileplanet. There were no other sources.



My choice of operating system is irrelevent here. I subscribe to no gaming magazines, therefore the concept of ""demo discs"" is foreign to me.
