Mmm, that's a sith ship?
Have you looked at other models for referance? It could be a good bounty hunter ship or a small band of rogue ships...but not Sith.

May I ask what time period your fan film takes place in? And yes, that looks a tad like a tie or an X-wing. Sith ships are more organic, more curved than that. Nice Bounty Hunter ship though, [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

The fan film will take place during the rise of the empire.
Im working on making it look more organic.

if that is a landing strut on the bottom, it looks too small to hold the ship. And it's still seems to ridged.

EVERYTHING in the Prequel Trilogy looks curvy and organic (I wish they'd rehire Ralph McQuarrie). I like the more angular hull, it blends better with the Original Trilogy designs.

Interesting design, makes me think Republic Sienar Systems/REALLY early Sienar Fleet Systems.

As for the landing strut: My guess is the ship has two more farther aft and that all you're seeing here is the front strut.

I'd be interested in seeing more angles of the ship, particularly to see the numbers and configuration of the engines, and how deep the hull is.

How big is she and what kind of armament/performance are you looking at? The design, and judging from the canopy size, makes me think some sort of lighter starfighter (maybe similar to the A-wing or TIE Interceptor: lightly armed and shielded, but fast and highly maneuverable).

I had assumed a triangular 3 strut system, as it is one I use in my designs alot. What I meant is that the "foot" of the landing strut looks too small in proportion to the rest of the ship (big wings, big main hull, tiny landing struts). One problem is that with the lenght that the wings extend from the center of the ship, it would be a little tricky to balance well (because if the two wings aren't almost exactly the same weight, it'll tip forward and towards the heavier wing). With such a small landing strut this would be a problem, where as with a larger one, you'd have more surface area on the ground and it would be more balanced.

Also the "toes" of the landing strut seem too small or thin to do very much good. That could just be because the landing strut itself is so small, but as far as the toes go, the goal should be for them to be sterdy, and to reach out as far as possible to increase the surface area that it is touching.

Well, it looks like he's using the prequel-style landing struts. If you compare them to the ones in the Original Trilogy there's a NOTABLE design difference, both in the design of the skids and the struts themselves (OT look like REAL landing gear struts, PT remind me a lot of AT-AT legs, then you have the REAL bizarre and narrow insect legs of the Royal Starship in TPM). Personally I much prefer the design of the OT landing gear.

As for balancing, it depends on how wide the rear struts are placed, and how low the ship sits on the ground. With the the way the ship's mass is spread out the lower to the ground she is the more stable she'll be, even if the aft landing gear are close together (which is how the E-wing, with its VERY narrow-track rear landing gear, remains stable on the ground: the wings and engines come very close to the deck).

The wings look a lot better. A little more wouldn't hurt. Also the nose needs to be take out or rounded. It's getting there...

You'd see why they went with more curvy designs in the prequels if you have watched certain documentaries on Ep 1 or 2.

Ok, so it looks like she's got a single engine strip/arc a'la the Millennium Falcon?

I'd space the rear landing gear out a little bit more, tho. As low as she is to the ground balance isn't as much of an issue because of the way the mass is spread out, but I'd widen the stance a little bit more.

And again I'd say stick with the more angular design. Right now she has a very aggressive look, and trying to make it more organic will seriously detact from that.

And yeah, I know why George made the prequel era all nice and curvy while the OT gets a hard and angular: PT is the Roman Empire while the OT is the "Dark Ages". The problem is there's plenty of real-world reasons that really kills the suspension of disbelief that the two take place in the same universe, and I'm not talking about changes in FX technology. Greater care should have been taken to reflect the look of the Original Trilogy while still giving the prequels their own unique visual characteristics.

Sax, dude, sorry but you're wrong about the less-organicness. Maul's ship is very curvey and stuff, it doesn't really become aggressive or anything. The Sith don't want to be flaunting their evilness around anyway. They're pretty secretive, y'know.

Ultimately it doesn't matter a **** what EITHER of us think. He'll make it how he wants to make it.

But my opinion remains: Making it less angular could totally change the character of the design which I think would be a mistake. It's a GOOD design and I don't think he should change it that much. Maybe move the rear landing gear around, add some more details (like guns. Where are the guns?) but otherwise leave the silhouette as it is.

And maybe in the end he might decide it doesn't fit his original purposes and decides to use it as something else. Remember that the Corellian Corvette began life as the Millennium Falcon...

Looking at the pics, you may also want to do something with the forward landing gear well. See if there's a way you could make it flush with the underside of the nose rather than a box sticking out from the hull (although a BIG kudos for recognizing you needed to provide ROOM for landing gear! It's amazing how such small, simple things escape a lot of fanboy ship designers). One way of doing it would be to make the strut look more like the X-wing's forward landing skid, that way it could be drawn up into a shallower landing gear well.

*sigh* that ship would tip over as soon as it landed between the size of the struts and the placement of the aft struts. Look at those wings, they look realitivly heavy too.

The ship DOES looks aft-heavy (although if you look at them, even many canon fighters like the X-wing are) but I think those aft skids are far enough back to keep her from standing on end (remember there's also equipment up front that helps act as a counterweight for some of the ship's mass).

As for the wings, they look heavy but they're balanced on each side so she shouldn't just roll over, it'd take some sort of force to do it (sudden change in deck angle due to maneuvers, weapons impacts, a pelican landing on one wing, etc). The wings also sit low enough to the ground that they'd act as sort of a secondary landing gear, too, so if the ship DOES rock to one side it likely wouldn't flip anyway.

I'll reserve total judgement until Overlord give us some size and performance data, but so far it's one of the better fan designs I've seen in a while.
