Yeah, I think I'm going to make an Aragorn model. In any case, I worked out his sword in about half an hour.

I still need to work on the blade and the hilt a tad, but the grip is perfect.

Yeah, though the tint is a tad more pale. I fixed that.

The Mad Hatter: Grismath told me the LotR TC already had all the models it'd need.

It's plain, but that's GOOD. That's why the swords in LotR are so great, they're actually FUNCTIONAL. I HATE most of those "fantasy" swords you get from a lot of places with the jagged blades and spikey hilts. Utter crap and you couldn't use them in combat if your life depended on it, which is a problem because it usually DOES.

This is just a simple longsword, as are several of the other swords (Anduril, etc.). Most of the swords are rather useable, with the one exception being the movie interpretation of Glamdring. Whoever thought a leaf-blade longsword would be a good idea must have been toking the ganja.

Nice, I like.

Glamdring is Gandalf's sword, right?

dont want to ruin the fun but there already is an aragorn mod

------------------
2003-06-21, 9:01 AM #20
I'm not making a mod, I'm making a model. I don't care if there's one already, it's still fair game for my portfolio.
2003-06-21, 5:18 PM #21
Actually Glamdring IS useable. They were very careful about shaping the blade to get the leaf-shape without throwing off either weight or balance.

And the reason for a leaf-shaped blade is it gives you a weighted cutting edge without sacrificing a thrusting tip. Most historical hand-and-a-half swords either had a broad blade best suited for slashing (Aragorn's Ranger sword is a good example of this) or a highly-tapered thrusting tip that wasn't properly weighted for cutting. VERY few had both, which is what the leaf shape provides.

Indeed, but the extra weight it adds is much better suited for shorter swords. It's rarely used on a long or greatsword.
2003-06-22, 10:09 AM #23
I think it was also important to give Glamdring the leaf-shaped blade because of the relation between it and Sting. Both were forged in Gondolin during the First Age so there'd be a similarity in their designs (if Jackson DOES go back and make the Hobbit as he said he'd be interested in doing I just hope he remembers that since Orcrist was the mate of Glamdring it would likely look more or less the same).

The fact it's not common to use a leaf-shaped blade on longer swords (although I THINK I saw a reproduction of a Celtic longsword that had it) also helps set it apart as special (the main character in the fantasy story I'm writing uses a hand-and-a-half sword with a leaf-shaped blade for that reason).

Minor Note: Peter Jackson isnt making the Hobbit into a movie. His next big project after LotR is a remake of King Kong.

I know that, but he said in an interview he IS considering doing the Hobbit if the right offer comes along (given the success of LotR, New Line would be frelling idiots NOT to make the offer).

I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes his next major project after Kong.
