Msmsgs.exe loading itself in the background. How to stop?
2003-12-11, 1:04 AM #1
I just got a new computer with Windows XP already installed. I must say, given the choice, I'd rather be running Windows ME. XP is so unbearably sluggish that I'd much rather have ME's 90% chance of the BSoD.

Anyway, back to the point of this topic: How on Earth do you make MSN Messenger stop loading up in the background? It logs me on whenever I connect to the internet, and doesn't even let me know it's running. The only way I can be alerted to it's presence is if somebody sends me an IM.
It's a bloody nuisance, and despite my shutting down of its process in the Task Manager, it just keeps loading up again. Any help?

In MSN Messanger's options, go to the General tab. Under sign in, there's a handful of options, one of which is to 'Allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet' - that should be it.

if what he said doesnt work do this:
run: msconfig
go to the startup tab. click on the checkbox next to msmsgs.exe
Hit ok. You dont have to reboot, but hte next time you do the program wont load when the computer starts.

Go to Setting > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
There you will find all that is running. Right click on the the offensive Messenger and click properties. Click Stop and from the 'Start up type' dropdown menu, choos Disabled.

For a more comprehensive list or what services you can and/or should be running got to www.blackviper.com and look about half way down the left side for XP services.

Im sorry, but no, WinXP > WinME. I still hate the both of them with a bleeding passion, but XP does suck slightly less than ME...

go to Start > Run >
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

that's the easiest, and cleanest, way to remove MSN Messenger from XP [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Or you could just dispose of its folder after shutting it down with ctrl-alt-del. Worked for me.

Now it'd be funny if Microsoft accidentally made that a key component of some API.

Its just so nice of M$ to have set this up in such a way that it starts all the time... I even loaded up my XP disk and went to the accessories install/uninstall and it noted that messanger wasn't even installed yet there it lay in its folder in Program Files.... bah

After hearing this, I have no viable reason why I would want to upgrade to XP.

Windows 98 SE works fine for me. What can XP do that 98 SE couldn't also do?

WinME is MUCH crappier than Win98 is.

However, Win98 is inferior to XP. XP runs on the same kernel as Win2k, which everyone knows to be very stable. (1 crash a month with 24/7 operation, very good for a windows machine, IMO)

Win98, for example, still relies on DOS to operate. Kill the DOS, kill the OS.

Oh it's there Charlie. Go to the windows compnents section in Add/Remove programs. Apparently MS is classfying that POS as a major part of Windows. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Yeah I saw it there although it wasn't checked therefore I couldn't uninstall it because as far as it was concerned it wasn't installed to begin with.

It's too bad I didn't get here sooner, I had to battle the same thing a while ago.

Either way, now it's my turn.

How the bloody hell do I get rid of MSN Explorer?

I tried once - I got it off, but I couldn't figure out how to connect to the internet once the big Fisher Price login box stopped appearing.

Try TheJKWhoSays' idea - rename msn6.exe to msn6.exe.die. Works like a charm.

msn6.exe should be located here: C:\Program Files\MSN\MSNCoreFiles\msn6.exe
