What software/hardware would you folks recommend to those of us who are wanting to create our own music and/or sound effects?

Let's make this post informative so that people can use it for a reference to answer newbie questions regarding music software/hardware. I'll start it off with my limited knowledge.

Software:

FL Studio - http://www.fruityloops.com

I'm trying to learn how to use Scream Tracker. Once I feel like it, I'll try FrootyLoops.

I'll prolly never make anything geat though. I'm just doing it for the fun (like JK editing).

goldwave, audacity, and modtracker. All of which you can get for free. But those are what I use for manupulating the sounds. I use fruityloops for the base.

When bread becomes toast, it can never go back to being bread again.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

Fostex MR-8 Digital Multitrack Recorder for recording (obviously).
FruityLoops for drums (and sometimes bass)
Goldwave to edit the tracks (if necessary).
CDBurnerXP Pro to make CDs (if I ever get around to it).

I'm not going to bother listing all my instruments processors, and pedals, though.

Izotope ozone for mastering (the direct x version, not the one for winamp)
Reason 2.0 & Recycle
SynthEdit

VSTs include:
Muon tau pro 1.01
Native Instruments Battery
NI FM7
NI Kontakt
NI Reaktor 3.0 & 4.0
NI Traktor

Software:
Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 for recording
Fruity Loops for drums, DXi
Crappy midi keyboard, using with Gigastudio
Goldwave
Nero

EDIT: I forgot to mention my fav. plugins: The Izotope series: Trash and Ozone are the best DX plugs for any guitar player. Get yourself a good DI box or a nice preamp, plug direct into your computer, and you'll be amazed at the quality you can acheive!

Hardware:
Ibanez RG550 6-string
Yamaha BB604 4-string bass
Apex 420 condenser mic
Shure SM57
staudio Media 7.1 sound card (great for recording, has phantom power: check out www.staudio.com and www.hoontech.com)
Hughes & Ketner, Marshall and Fender Amps (dist, solo, clean respectively)
Yorkville bass amp
All effects are done on the computer, until I get around to buying new pedals to replace my digital MFX units. 24 bit rocks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
