    Cool/Interesting Music Links

    Complete list so far:

    http://www.gnoosic.com <- input the names of artists and music gropus you like, and it will give you a list of other artists/music groups that you may or may not have heard of, but will also probably like


    http://www.songtitle.info <- A list of names and artists for songs that have appeared in tv commercials.

    http://www.allmusic.com <- Look up a band and you can see a biography, a list of all the band members, a list of some of their influences, a list of similar bands, a list of bands they influenced, other bands the members were in, and a discography with reviews. Some bands have more information than others, obviously.


    http://www.audioscrobbler.com/ <- Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.

    The irony of this site is that it only really knows popular bands/artists who play mainstream music.

    Same here. It seemed to know a lot of underground electronic musicians/groups.

    The database is constantly updated based on your replies of "I like them," "I dont like them," and "Never heard of them," So it only makes sense that it would be a bit better at grouping music that the majority of people enter into the search.

    It knew none of the names I've tried. And I wasn't even trying too hard, I put in big names like crystal method and fluke.

    Yeah, it knew some of the fairly obscure stuff I put in like Big Star and Chris Bell.

    I also tried putting in the 3 most obscure punk bands I could think of, and it gave me a whole bunch of stuff I've never heard of.

    If you want to go really in depth with The Beatles, check this out.
    If you click on the songs, you see notes on them by Alan Pollack, a musicologist. He goes in to extreme depth with each song, pointing out arrangement, chord progressions, music structure, rhythm, and tons of other stuff. Most of it is way over my head.

    I'll definitely check that site out. I'd like to know as much about the Beatles as possible.

    The site you mentioned is more about how the made their songs, while the site I mentioned is more about what inspired them to make the song, and what was going on with the band at the time. Both are really in depth and worth checking out for any Beatles fan.

    Yes. Even if you don't understand a lot of the stuff on the site I linked, it's still interesting. You come out with a lot more respect for the Beatles as well.

    Audiscrobbler seems to crash my Winamp (5.03a). Anyone else having problems with it or know of a fix? When I uninstall the plugin, Winamp works great again.

    Delusions of Adequacy - Another indie music site with the biggest collection of reviews I've ever seen. Great site.

    Downhill Battle - Music activisim site with tons of articles and editorials about the state of the music industry. A must-read.

    Yeah, the gnoosic site wasn't that good at all. I entered Metallica, it returned Judas Priest. Entered Megadeth, returned Judas Priest. Entered Iron Maiden, returned Judas Priest. I think that whoever made the database doesn't particularly care for or know about that many genres of music, so they just added well known bands for the genres they don't specialize in.
