They meet up one day, fiddle with their instruments, play any old crap, and yet it sounds brilliant. I'm talking of course about that new "Bad Day" song. I thought this band would die, and yet they still go on, their new songs are still great. I cant really say the same for U2 or Bryan Adams.

I know I'm gonna get a'whoopin from 90% of massassi for saying the above, blessed as most of you are with the musical standards of a sick Badger with a lisp.
No offense. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Count me in the REM>U2 crowd.

I think I'm the only person who likes the song Animal. I love that song.

The Smiths>REM

Maybe Radiohead is a bit better than REM, but they're not as good as The Smiths.

I'm not the biggest fan of REM, but from what songs I've heard from them, Id have to agree that they are indeed awesome.

I loathe REM. I'd like to slaughter a newborn baby for every bloody time I've heard Losing My Religion. Jesus, that song gets old faster than Stairway to Heaven, and it's not even half as good. Ugh.

Quack! You've got to hear... Bad Day, it's pretty much the same song with different lyrics! Well, not really, but the choruses have very similar melodies.

And U2 didnt sell out, if they did then they were sell outs from the very beginning. They never changed their music to be popular. When they experimented, their album sales plummeted, but they still went ahead with it. Zooropa and Pop, their dance/experimental albums are the best 2 cd's they have, but they also got the worst critic reviews and bad sales. And then they returned to their roots with All That You Cant Leave Behind........ I think you mean by selling out they made massive amounts of money and by Hollywood I think you were referring to their massive stage shows with all the effects. So if you meant that, then yes they did sell out. If you meant they changed their style to make money, then no, they didnt sell out.

There's probably a handful of R.E.M songs I like, just like mosts bands really.

I've never understood why everyone thinks they're so great, obviously i've only heard their not-so-good stuff.

Have you heard their early stuff? That's better than their more recent albums.

They pretty much invented alternative music. Their first few albums are so great.

Peter Buck is also my favorite guitarist. I dig his style.

But The Beatles > *

This thread is incredibly early 2000s, and REM's talent for decent songwriting was hidden in Bill Berry's monobrow.
