“Anyone there?” The first usher yelled to noone and nowhere in particular.

“It was just the air conditioner. Come one.”

The usher looked at the top of the theater for a few moments, then turned back down.

“Hey, this one is clean already.”

“Cool, lets have a smoke outside, and tell them we were in here.”

The ushers turned off the lights, then left.

“Whew, that was close.”

“Ok, let’s get moving.”

Steven and the friend with the beard climbed up the backs of the chairs. It was difficult in the yellow rain coats, hats, and galoshes they were wearing.

After getting to the top, they pulled out the collapsible antennae. They had attached big wads of newspaper to the antennae, and each wad of paper had a little bit of lighter fluid dripped onto it. They lit the paper. It ignited in a flash of light.

They lifted their fiery sticks up as high as they could. They were about 8 inches below the ceiling, and 6 inches below the emergency fire sprinklers.

After a moment, the first sprinkler went off. Then another. Then all of them. The whole theater was being covered in water from the torrent of indoor rain.

Steven and his friend with a beard laughed. They were kept relatively dry in their rain suits. They gathered their belongings, and stowed their bags underneath their raincoats.

People in the hallway and lobby were rushing around, yelling and screaming. People were running toward the exits as they were getting drenched in water. The chaos caused the two delinquents, kept dry by their yellow rubber clothing, to laugh to themselves. They marched down the hallway in their storm trooper outfits proudly. Several people gave them angry, consfused looks as they hurried and bumped down the hallways. Water was beginning to form small puddles in the lobby. Ushers and attendants scrambled to keep order, while tying to keep themselves covered by popcorn buckets and cardboard food boxes. Steven and his friend stood like heroes among the crowd of people dripping and scrambling to get out of the monsoon pouring form the ceiling. They put on their best tough guy faces as they headed for an emergency exit that had not yet been opened.

As they exited the theater, Steven and the friend with the beard took off their rubber suits and tossed them into their bags. They laughed and congratulated themselves on how clever they were. They walked past a drunk who had passed out in the alley, and went to the front of the theater. Throngs of wet, angry people were standing around trying to dry off in the cold air. Steven his bearded friend strolled by, trying to act nonchalant.

“What’s going on?” Steven inquired.

“Why is everyone wet?”

“The fire sprinklers went off,” a man replied gruffly, “and no one knows why. There wasn’t a fire.”

“I saw two guys in rain suits, I bet they did it,” added a wet lady.

The bearded friend motioned toward a woman who was wearing a white, now wet, t-shirt. “Look”, he told the angry man, “it’s not all bad.”

The man was still upset, but was now directing his attention toward the wet woman.

The friend with a beard followed Steven to the parking lot. They climbed into Steven’s Pontiac.

“That was awesome!”

“Yeah! We got away clean!”

“And dry.”

After several attempts, the engine roared to life.

“Where to?”

“I don’t know.”

“Want a Slurpee?”

“Umm. Yeah.”

Steven’s car screeched as he wheeled around the lot and headed toward 7-11, and unknown to them, toward an Adventure with Police Officers.
