Past and present cell phones

I was recently reminded of my first cell phone, a Nokia 3320, and I thought as a twist to the traditional "post your cell phone" thread, it might be cool to also post the other phones you've owned over the years.

So, as I said, my first was as Nokia 3320. I had it from 2002 to 2004.

Then when my contract expired I re-upped and got a Motorola V220. Terrible, terrible phone. Myself, my mom, and my sister all had one, and none of them lasted. I had mine from late 2004 to some time in 2007.

When the V220 died (it would randomly turn off, reboot, or lose connection to the screen) I replaced it with a Samsung P207 that I bought off of some guy. It wasn't really anything special, but the quality was a lot better than the V220. In the last few months I had it I broke the antenna off, which was my fault, but it still worked well. Had it from 2007 to July 2008.

By July 2008 my contract had expired and I had been holding out for the iPhone to come to Canada. When the price of the data plans was announced I decided I couldn't afford it and went to Virgin Mobile (from Rogers). I got an LG Rumour. I liked it while I had it, but I turns out with Virgin I don't get reception at my house so I had to switch back to Rogers. Only had this phone for a couple of weeks.

So I went back to Rogers and couldn't decide what phone to get. I liked the qwerty keypad of the Rumour but Rogers doesn't offer any qwerty phones that are not classified as smartphones. I decided to try an LG Vu because it isn't a smartphone and has a virtual qwerty keyboard. There weren't any in stock, so I took a Nokia 5310 on the condition that I could switch when a Vu came in. The 5310 was pretty nice, if I knew someone who just wanted a basic phone that was nice and slim I'd recommend it. Only had it a week or so.

I didn't want a basic phone, though. I had also done more reading about the Vu and it didn't sound that great. I'd heard great things about the N95, so that became my choice. All the power of a smartphone, but it qualifies for a basic data plan. If it had qwerty it'd be pretty much perfect, but it's close enough for me.

Dude when I was a kid, we had one of those cancer bricks. An old motorola. Still got it around somewhere but I am not inclined to dig it up.

For those of you who play GTA its like Tommy's cell phone from Vice City.

I can't remember the model numbers of my first few phones, because it was so long ago. The first one was a blue Nokia that looked sort of like the 3320; the second one (I think) had a panel around the keypad that, if you flipped upwards and then turned the phone sideways, would form a full QWERTY keyboard ... that was pretty cool, but I think it got stolen :[ I'll try to find pictures of these later if I get the time.

Edit: Found them

The first ones looked something like this (although I don't think it was this exact model, but it's close):
Nokia 3530
[http://img.gsmarena.com/vv/pics/nokia/no3530_00.jpg]

The QWERTY flip one: (it wasn't gold or as flashy-looking as this though)

And then, after that, came the RAZRs...

~2006: V3
[http://mobile-it.ca/images/v3%20black.jpg]

Then it broke. I had a warranty, so I got another one:

Then this one got washed, but I managed to get another one under warranty:

But then I fell when playing capture the flag at my (future) college, and the screen cracked. I kept using it for almost a year, but the black in the screen slowly spread like a cancer and eventually it was unusuable. I upgraded a bit to the V3xx:

And finally, a few weeks ago, this one failed to turn on after I had been using it for a year without the back battery panel because I had dropped it one day and the panel got dented and wouldn't stay on so I just removed it. Then I went to Six Flags and went on a water ride and water got into one of the crevices and it died. :(

And so after so many RAZRs, I decided to move on up:

RAZR2!

First phone, like almost everyone in the US, was the Nokia 5110. Replaceable faceplates, F*** YEAH. Crappy phone, hated using it, I still miss snake though.

Second phone, Nokia 1100. I went down 4,010 versions, apparently. Stupid Nokia product naming conventions.

Third phone, Treo 600. Hated using it, it was big, clunky, it would drop reception constantly, it was hellish to unlock. So glad I got rid of it.

Fourth phone, samsung a727. Biggest mistake I've ever made. It had shortcuts to call for emergancy services that would activate even if you locked the keypad. In the three days I owned the phone, I called the police 4 times and the ambulance 2 times. The interface was god awful, nothing made any sense. It was actually a really nice phone, it had great sound quality and a great antenna, but it was just ruined by the worst UI I've seen in my entire life.

My short experience with the bad UI, coupled with the $200 price cut, made me fly to the AT&T store to get the iPhone. The amazing interface, the great sound quality, the excellent integration with my computer, with the 16gb of flash memory on there (instead of stupid cards), and the awesome internet browsing. It was the first phone I actually enjoyed using and always carried with me. I can not recommend this phone enough.

Oh yeah, and funny enough, while my phone was broken and I was looking for a new one, my office issued me a company phone because of the need for constant communication. Guess what it was?[http://img.alibaba.com/photo/11503211/Motorola_Razr_V3_Silver.jpg]

This thread reminds me of the landfills full of old/unused cell phones :(
2008-08-27, 1:29 PM #12
I still have all of mine somewhere.

People should really recycle them, though. There are organizations that give them out at battered women's shelters and such, since you can still call 911 even without a service plan. And if it's broken, it can at least be disposed of properly.
2008-08-27, 2:02 PM #13
Pommy is crazy, I dunno how you can stand the RAZR. The buttons alone are infuriating to use.

I started with the Nokia 1100 like pictured above, then moved to a Samsung that I forget the model of, then I moved to another Samsung that was actually pretty decent, and now I have a:

The UI isn't the best, and if you try to do anything advanced with it it likes to crash, but it's good otherwise. Great battery life suprisingly.

I really don't see how you people can all use Flip Phones.

I hate those things more than touch screens.
nope.

Flip phones >>>>> regular phones.

No locking necessary. Also, I prefer the whole "open to answer, close to hang up" thing... just feels more satisfying when you hang up on someone. Plus they just feel more... compact. Less like a gameboy and more like a phone.
2008-08-28, 5:37 AM #19
...Regular phones don't fold.
nope.
2008-08-28, 7:30 AM #20
That was his point. He's saying flip phones are greater than (several times, apparently) regular ones.

I'm undecided on the whole thing. As you can see above I've owned a couple of both. It's nice that flip phones have their screen protected, and I agree about the answering/hanging up thing. It's pretty much impossible for a flip phone to have a large screen or a qwerty keypad though (unless it's incredibly awkward), so I guess it comes down to what you want to do with it. For just a basic phone, I'd probably go flip.

however other phones used by the family

first we had one of those ginormous bag phones (couldn't begin to tell you the model)
then a microtac (not sure of the specific model)
then after the microtac an audiovox CDM9000
then a motorola T720 (the thing drained batteries like a mofo)

my sister on the other hand has gone through many cellphones so many i couldn't even tell you what she had before she moved to florida... i just know she had a startac at some point

anyway...my phone...

I use a RAZR V3 right now, which I got second hand and free. Before that I had a Virgin Slice, a cheap $30 phone that was decent for the money, except for how it constantly locked up.

My first phone was so old I can't even find it. I think it was either Motorola or LG. It was a clamshell (or whatever they call the non flip phones) it actually came with games, and had a small led screen with a blue backlight. It was probably around 2001.

Nokia Ringo (about 4 days in 1998)
Ericsson SH888 (I think... anyhow, early 2000s until mid-2003)
Nokia 3310 (mid-2003 to mid-2006)
Nokia 5140i (mid-2006->)

I liked the 3310. A shame I have no idea where I put mine when I got the new crappy one... I'd like a new one, tho'

And I miss carphones. I'd install one in my butt if it had a chance of not getting lost.
