Possible fix for getting JK/Mots to work on x64
2009-02-14, 12:29 PM #1
As I have a x64 laptop, I had some trouble installing JK, so I did some searches. I ran into this website:
http://www.vistax64.com/gaming/158631-jedi-knight-dark-forces-2-vista-x64.html

"Fieseler" posted this (at the bottom of the page)
"i have found some instructions on how to get it to work. At the moment tho, it wont run in hires mode even when i enable it in the registry file.

i have attached the files in the rar for ppl who want to replay the game.

Edit by dmex : Warning Registry Files can cause problems, make sure you know what your doing before using them.
Attached Files
File Type: zip Downloads.zip (44.6 KB, 306 views)"

I still have yet to try this. It involves copying files from the JK disk, and installing a registry file, so I will update this when I find out whether it works or not. Just need to find a good freeware program to backup my registry first...

Get CCleaner. Should allow you to backup the registry (usually asks me when I fix registry).

That should work. As far as I know, the issue was the installer.

I'll look into it, thanks. I just ran into this page, early this morning.
http://www.jkhub.net/library/index.php/Tutorials:Install_JK

I tried both directions, but it seems my 1st JK cd is horribly scratched up...so some of the files didn't copy completely. I'm waiting on a download of that disc, and I'll update this if it works. For now though, it says there's an error, and it "cannot load file."

Hopefully it'll be fixed after I copy the files completely over. :carl:

Just install by hand. There's a tutorial on jkhub about it.

I do apologize for reviving a pretty dead post, but I'm running into this very same issue (even up to the disc not functioning - crack on the inner ring. Copied everything but the video folder and the miniinstall folder, go figure?). I was wondering though - how did you get passed that error?

It's no problem. I will have to double check things, but I'm almost certain that this link: http://www.jkhub.net/library/index.php/Tutorials:Install_JK

helped me with JK. There might have been a more specific article on JK Hub for 64bit, and I'm willing to look that up later tonight or tomorrow (hopefully I remember with all I'm doing in real life). I'm pretty sure I had to download a new copy and that worked, maybe on top of other directions given on the site. I'm aware this isn't of much help to you, so again I want to look this over more maybe early this weekend.
Assuming I can't find anything and it still doesn't work, you could look into getting Sun Virtual Box, downloading a 32bit windows XP install cd, then installing Win XP in the virtual box, then installing JK in the box. (We all know JK works on WinXP 32bit) This probably makes no sense to you -- virtual box just emulates/runs an operating system. You allocate the amount of hard-drive space and RAM that it is allowed to have/use, install a OS on it, and well it's really not that complex. You should even be able to use JK online with it.
For now, good luck.

Thinking over things again, I'm pretty sure I downloaded the game, burned it to a disk... and was able to run it from there or after using JKHub's instructions .. or maybe even that registry file I wrote about in my first post. I know I was able to use it though.

I think I may have an x64 processor but a 32bit OS.. so maybe it's different for me. You can always run Sun's Virtual Box though. Look at Dmex's post from this site, where he quotes Darren: http://www.vistax64.com/gaming/158631-jedi-knight-dark-forces-2-vista-x64.html

Hopefully that will do it for you if for whatever reason the Jkhub tutorial doesn't.
