My cutscenes are totally messed up. When I attempt to watch a movie, pitch black pixels block out various parts of the video and only go to color when someone moves. Is there any fix for this? I reinstalled it many times, changed the display options, and even went onto a new computer. It doesn't want to work. Help, please?

I remember way back in the day when I ran Windows ME *shudders*, it would do that. It is simply a video card issue.

So how do I fix it?

What OS are running? I can't help but it's the first thing the clever ones that can will ask, that and your system specs.

The solution is Youtube.

Or RAD Video Tools!

I think I've always got that problem with JK in these 11 years I've had the game and I've had nVidia video cards for most of that time (I think I had some Ati 3D Rage II+ back in 1998-2001 and still got that problem).

Yeah, I've seen that problem before, but yeah, I can't remember how to fix it. Sorry.

Specs: I have a XP professional OS, with a NVidia video card, and youtube is not an option since I can't put that in the game itself.

It could just be a faulty disc also.

Try torrenting JK (since you legally own it) and install it using something like daemon tools, and see if you get the same results.

You do get the same results.

Youtube is the way to go.

I have the exact same problem.. I just live with it. :/ Like others said, youtube.
DO NOT WANT.

Does it happens when you run it in software mode or hardware mode? Well, not that it would matter with the cutscenes anyway...

Reinstall video drivers?

Do the JK videos run off the old Indeo drivers? The vids for Thief did, and I have those.

There is a way to make them work - keep searching!

Videos are handled by the third party component SMACKW32.DLL. You can try finding a newer version of this DLL. Just be sure to back up the existing one first in case it doesn't work.

I just tried an improved Smack.dll The game crashed, and I found out that if the dll is too new, the game crashes. If it is too old, you get black. But...there needs to be a way.

Newer versions of the library use a different link table because they also include Bink. They would not work.

Older versions of the library might have a hard time if your graphics card doesn't support 8-bit modes properly. NVIDIA has been trying to remove them from their graphics drivers for a while now. They're broken on OSX, for example.

How well does JK work under Wine these days?
2009-04-26, 6:07 PM #19
I couldn't ever get it to work right on wine. It installs but then crashes when it's starting up. I last tried ~6 months ago or so.

I thought for JK:Source they were re-filming new cutscenes too

Tried, and it was going pretty well, except couldn't duplicate Kyle's hair :/. Had to scrap the sets we created.

There are several different versions of that DLL out there. You could try one by one until you find the correct and working one.
Nothing to see here, move along.
