Dark Forces Mod for JA is dead!

End of an era!

Not that surprising, but still a damn shame. It's definitely the most advanced DF remake out there. Of course, there hadn't been any major updates since 2008 but now it's dead for certain.

The 6-level Demo is definitely one of the top SP level packs out there (my favorite DF E1L1 remake would still be Rebel Agent, though).

Here's hoping they'll release the unfinished files at some point!

Maybe Zell could take a hint from that! WINK. Did you say 'wink' or did you wink? He said that too, dad.

shut up MikeMac

and shut up Dark Forces mod guy who says "welp, life got in the way!" well, obviously, come on. just say 'ah, i stopped doing it' instead of saying 'my grandpa died and i moved and i was in school and i had a job'. who cares? **** anyone who was gonna be actually mad at you for not finishing, you don't have to ladle out those awkward unnecessary excuses.

it just makes me feel weird.

I wonder what percentage of mods survive, probably lower than restaurant survival

They were at a dead-end . You can't mimic DF weapons beyond the e-11 and dets, and JA SP is not flexible enough for a convincing TC (can't really introduce new enemy types and so forth).

Still, the demos they released were well-made. I mean, actually RELEASING something puts you better than 99.99% of other mods.

Wait, was that name a Han Solo reference? If so, I'm just now picking up on that. I always thought it was just a penis joke.

I haven't played DFMJA in some time, but I think it already had the Fusion Cutter. Or at least the 3D model and stuff in the assets.

Wow, didn't notice Ham Yoyo there. I always just thought he liked ham. And underage girls. At the same time. With a yo-yo involved. Eh.

Funny... I actually just purchased and installed DF on Steam not too long ago, and have been playing through the game over the past week or so. Just got to the Coruscant level...

Dark Forces was arguably the best game of the series, even though I love JK/MotS to death.

Can I buy and play it through steam or do I need dosbox and all that other **** because I'm too ****ing lazy to do any of that right now
2012-02-08, 6:58 PM #19
The Steam version uses a preconfigured dosbox setup, if I remember right.

thatd be super neat, steam is actually cool sometimes, i remember coming home in 2003 to play CS after a long day of middle school only to endure the piece of **** that was steam, "friends" didnt work for ****ing ever if i recall correctly
2012-02-08, 7:15 PM #21
Yeah, as time has gone by it's gotten better and better.

-Nowadays, the main problem with steam is the temptation it unleashes every time a big sale rolls around.

XL Engine

Man, I really like bringin' this one up. But anyway, you can play through most of the game with it. Pretty cool.

And to think, if they only had patience and waited, they could have made significant progress considering the source code is now public...

Well, the project had more or less folded already in 2008 when the (extremely awesome, btw) 6-level demo was released (with scarce mostly Nar Shaddaa-related updates some time after that).

And from what I've peeked into JKHub.ORG, it doesn't seem like any major JO/JA engine revitalizations are going to be available any time soon. I think Linux support has been enabled, even though in JA's case it has resulted in random decorations (e.g. buildings and railings) appearing as trees in some levels. Oh well.

Yeah, but it's a long process. The Freespace 2 community has done amazing things with the source code, but it's taken over 10 years to get to this point. I'm sure people will bang away at upgrading JA over the years.
