End of the world fantasies

Presume that the end of the world as you know it occurs very soon in your lifetime.

  • How do you fantasize the apocalyptic scenario will occur? Zombies? Robots? Virus? Natural disasters? Wrath of God? Conversely, which scenario do you NOT want to play out?
  • What would you dream of doing in such a (post-)apocalyptic scenario? Wander and explore the earth in a mercenary fashion? Charge where angels fear to tread towards the world-ending dangers to try and achieve what none have done before? Try to uphold some sort of society? Do all the terrible things you couldn't do before? Conversely, what would you NOT want to do?
  • What are your favorite and least-liked (post-)apocalyptic stories?

For me, I'd want to see all of the above, though I also presume that "wrath of God" might be equivalent, and I wouldn't want to be in a "dying Earth" scenario where humanity just fades away. I'd be a fan of wandering the Earth, and depending on the situation, could see myself trying for just about anything, though I have no interest in doing terrible things because "I could." My favorite stories are just about any of the 80's variety like The Stand, The Terminator, that sort of thing.

I may or may not be trying to make a new forum game based on this feedback.

Near gamma ray burst. Every life form on Earth is eradicated by a wave of doom that propagates at the speed of light, not even giving humanity the chance to detect it or do anything interesting.

I believe this would be considered a natural disaster.

At least it's relatively quick and painless...I think.

I'm also looking for 80's-tastic end of the world music, though that might be something I should go to the Music forum about.

you mean lyrically? or the general tone of the song, dark

Here's how I picture it. Dio is up on top of a mesa in the Arizona desert and there's a pounding thunderstorm.

The first hit of Rainbow in the Dark hits, sends out a small shock wave out over the globe. Right after that the drums come in, and with every hit of the drums the earth starts getting broken up bit by bit.

"When there's lightning!.." starts, and lightning starts striking everywhere. The Earth then splits up from how intense the metal is. Dio rocks so hard they rip the world apart.

Neither, necessarily, though I prefer instrumental so at least not lyrically. If you've seen the "Rapture's Delight" episode of American Dad with the apocalypse half they do, the music from that is pretty spot-on for what I am referring to - generic, over-the-top 80's (generally dark) synth music. Other similar examples (not all are synth or dark, but generally set the atmosphere I think of):

That's what everyone says, but I'm pretty sure that song is a deliberate attempt to raise Cthulhu from his slumber. I mean, come on, "the land down under"? There's no way they can't be talking about R'lyeh. And that beat? It matches up perfectly to "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn". Men at Work were definitely worshipers of the Deep Ones. I just pray that I don't live to see their work come to fruition.

Haha, oh gbk! *cue canned audience laughter*

So while I'm probably going to go ahead and post the forum game I had in mind, it's looking like I probably won't gain much interest in it.

I wouldn't like a post-apocalyptic setting; I like my creature comforts and modern conveniences. >.> But possibly I'd go sit on a mountain somewhere with a fresh spring and orchards and meditate. >.>

The thing I don't like about post-apocalyptic settings (in works of fiction) in general is that it wasn't REALLY the end of the world. It's just spin, hehe. Besides, I'm not a huge fan of gritty stuff. Also, most post-apocalyptic stuff deals with nuclear war or natural disaster. I prefer apocalypses like, say, Doctor Who's ANNIHILATE THE MULTIVERSE or DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Sorry guys but you are all just figments of my dream state, so your world will end when I wake up. I doubt you will have much time to prepare, you might hear a deafening alarm clock noise shortly before your existence stops.

Fantasy apocalyptic scenario: I will be the last man on Earth, and all women will worship me. Or, I'd be okay with me being the last human being on Earth, with everyone else suddenly vanishing. Damn, I'd have some fun.

What I honestly see happening : Weather anomaly. Gradually The world either heats up or freezes over. We'd have to build shelters and probably end up being cut off from cities.
What I'd hate to see happen : Zombies. Honestly, the idea is ****ing scary to me. Be it actual rise from the grave zombie, or infection zombie.
What I'd like to see happen : Everyone gets super powers [ones that are actually cool] and chaos ensues.
What I'd really hate to see happen : Zombies. Growing vaginas on their face, then trying to eat you. With their face vagina.
