Ooohhh, nice. I really should finish playing Tekken before trying this remake, though.

Unfortunately, they're releasing the first version without Xen, and later on, "within a reasonable timeframe", the second release will contain a much-extended xen and Black Mesa Deathmatch.
DO NOT WANT.

I'm not too concerned about not getting to play Xen yet, as that part of the game wasn't ever really a part of HL I cared too much about. I just hope that Black Mesa gives me the sense of exploring a colossal underground facility like the original HL did for me.

I wouldn't mind if they released the Xen section in 2013.

yeah, you might be thinking of that early concept model with the full helmet, but officially he's never had any facial protection. otherwise headcrabs wouldn't be a threat to you.

Interestingly enough, they had plans for gameplay mechanics where your glasses would fall off as suggested in that 'trailer', which obviously were cut. Part of me wishes the game had been more like that trailer, and part of me is glad that they didn't risk going into "everything is animated for you" mode like some games do.

Of course, after they finish this, they need to do the same with Opposing Force, Blue Shift, and Decay. Then, they need to make one giant-ass Black Mesa map (preferably pre-things getting destroyed) to just walk around. That would fulfill my HL-nerd dreams so much.

Booted it up. So far, it's beautiful. It's what I envisioned an updated professional version of HL1 would be like. The only things that are throwing me off right now are 1) I seem to be stuck with walking - I haven't gotten up to Unforeseen Consequences yet, though, so it may be that the option is locked to remain more 'realism' (instead of frantically running around at the beginning) and 2) there's a lot of "Black Mesa" options of which a number I have no idea what they do.

The reason for all those "Black Mesa" options are because the community was incredibly vocal about many tiny little things they didn't personally want in the mod, so the devs left them in as cvar options so some people could have these features and others couldn't, at their disposal. I imagine the default settings are how it's meant to be played.
DO NOT WANT.

Well good! I think going that route is probably one of the better course of actions game developers can take.

I still wish I knew what most of those options did, though. :ninja:

99% of big mods and video game remakes never finish anything. it's surprising (in a good way) that they actually released black mesa

Besides, not having Xen in a HL remake release is like releasing Star Wars without the prequels.

Xen needs to be there but IMO it should be a reimagined Xen... replace jumping with shooting badguys and maybe a few physics puzzles

I can't speak on the later weapons, but they nailed the crowbar and pistol. They're both extremely satisfying to use. And the splatter on guns/Gordon is a nice touch.
I had a blog. It sucked.

Whenever I get reading stuff on the HL wiki, it makes me think that the universe lends itself really well to a semi-open world game, along the lines of Arkham Asylum in that there are several large connected levels that expand as the player gains more technology and defeats various enemies.

For example, you're running around in a combine controlled city trying to avoid being detected while building up the resistance. You raid weapon and food caches, and develop bases of operations. The devastation and depression of the people could be highlighted, as Gordon has to make the tough decision of who to provide with resources. The player could build up little bases everywhere, or a few key bases in key locations that Gordon could retreat to when the S hits the F. Finding scientists and bringing them back to the well defended bases would give the player a source of weapon and item "research," providing access to more weapons and items like the gravity gun, or pheropods, also opening more of the map up.

With some ai tweaking, the combine would patrol for Gordon and crack down on the resistance. On discovery, raids would be called in, with headcrab shellings or combine swat invasions. Stalkers would patrol the streets, and would have to be avoided until the player had enough weaponry to confront them. The player could come back to a base he didn't adequately equip that is now entirely zombified. The combine could move in and out of an area based on control, ala GTA:SA's style gang wars. I imagine a turning-point mission where the player dismantles a combine conversion center and makes it into a main base of operations for the resistance. I also see the vorts being a pivotal part of winning the war for the city, with the crescendo being the destruction of the tower in the middle of the city. G-man could make several appearances and provide riddler-esque problems at various locations. I also imagine, not just because I'm using arkham asylum as a model, but because I think it fits in with the resistance theme, a photography mini-game where evidence of the combines treatment of individuals is documented and used to encourage more people join the resistance instead of complacently be controlled.

I could see excursions to xen being a fascinating addition, but I want to see where HL3 takes us, since that seems to be the logical next step after Ep3.

I realize that HL2's linear narrative essentially tried to give the effective feeling of this idea, but I really like the idea of controlling how I build up the resistance, and forcing tough storyline based decisions on Gordon. Also the idea of returning to a base that has been destroyed because you didn't provide them with enough firepower and were too close to the frontlines gives me a certain satisfaction that I want out of all the tower defense minigames that seem tagged onto triple-A titles.

Eh, both times when I tried to download the second zip (on ModDB), I got "Unexpected end of archive". Maybe the first one was busted as well. Whatever, I'm testing this out in 2015.

all the little things like tossing the scientist some tp in the beginning are really nice touches. All the subtle changes and the big ones too keep things interesting.

Is anyone else experiencing motion sickness or headaches when playing this? I've noticed that after a few hours of play, I'll start getting headaches and slight motion sickness and it persists for the rest of the day. Today, the symptoms didn't even fully set in until like an hour after I stopped playing and continue to linger.

no... you get out... jumping puzzles are awful in first person and have no place in a FPS... at the time valve (and many other developers) didn't know any better so they threw jumping puzzles into their shooters
