Wreck-It Ralph

So I thought a thread had been made about this already, and it seems either I was mistaken or I suck at searching for it. Anyway, I saw the movie earlier tonight, and it was great! Far from 'butchering' what video games mean to those of us who grew up close with them, I think it paid fairly good homage to them. It was also a rather entertaining family animated movie to boot.

If I had any 'nitpicks on the movie, they'd be as follows:

  • Early in the movie, they mention about "going turbo" which, in the context of the scenes, obviously meant "going rogue" in some fashion or another. Especially with the significant use of Street Fighter references (mostly with Zangief), I thought it was somehow tied to Street Fighter II Turbo. It was confusing until they explained it, and I think they could have gone with something else to lessen the confusion.
  • The main little girl is considered a glitch, though you find out that she was initially probably the main character who was sabotaged by the main villain. Because she's a glitch, presumably, she can't leave the game (something they establish). However, at the end, she still has her glitch 'self' and is implied to be able to leave the game, so it seems vague how that exactly worked in the fictional world of the movie. On a related note, it seemed hard to imagine that Sugar Rush wouldn't get shut down with her as an obviously over-powered character.
  • It was also somewhat curious how the main bad guy 'hid' in Sugar Rush with the changes he made without getting the Sugar Rush game shut down, presumably for some years. It makes sense that Ralph didn't know, but I would have thought one of the 'real' people would have noticed a main character wasn't playable.

Also, I love the fake commercials that were made for the movie (though not shown in the movie). Here's one for Fix-It Felix.

And here's one for Hero's Duty, though I think this one isn't as good as the other two.

Really liked Wreck it Ralph. In fact, I liked it so much I recorded a podcast about it. If you're on the fence about seeing the movie, listen to a little bit of this podcast and hopefully it will convince you. (This was my first time actually facilitating the conversation, so it's a little awkward at the beginning). No spoilers involved so no worries there. http://archive.org/download/FilmFreaks-Wreck-it-ralph/Wreck-it-Ralph.mp3
