GTA5 is out soon, cost 270 million to make.

That's a whole lot of dead hookers and horse race gambling.

How much of it is for advertising?

The vast, vast majority of that budget went to marketing and distribution.
2013-09-08, 9:33 PM #4
I'm sure, but as near as I can tell at least 100 million ducats went into development itself.
That's nothing to scoff at, didn't Avatar cost a similar amount?
2013-09-08, 9:40 PM #5
Maybe $80 million. When fully staffed I figure it costs them around £9.5m a year to operate. If they started immediately after GTA4 came out, and they were fully staffed from the beginning, I'd expect their actual development cost to be around £50m. But neither of those assumptions are good.

Basically it's a combination of Edinburgh having depressed salaries, and the fact that you don't need a full team during a project wind-up. You only need a few devs and a couple of artists to make test assets for the first few months of development. Most of their people would have been working on other games during that time (Rockstar North made or collaborated on 7 other games since GTA4 came out.)

Middleware is extra, but when your budget is in the tens of millions those licenses sorta fall into rounding error territory.

Are celebrities voice overs and music licensing even a drop in the bucket?
2013-09-09, 3:44 AM #8
That sort of thing can add up in a hurry, depending on who the voice actor is and what the song is. Hell, I remember reading that the soundtrack for Clerks cost something like $250k to license, and the movie itself was shot for $28k.

EDIT: And Hugo Weaving got paid something like $200k to do voice acting for the part of Megatron in the first Transformers movie. He has like 20 lines.

I just saw a 5-6 story billboard for GTA5 on the side of a building in a not so good suburban area outside of Paris the other day. I'll snap a photo if I make it out that way again.
? :)

Supposedly Patrick Stewart got paid $500k for his one Oblivion session.

Hugo Weaving is in Transformers?
nope.

I played a little of GTA IV but ... it just felt weird. Which was a bit irritating to me, because GTA: San Andreas was (and still is) my favourite one of them all due to having amazing gameplay and - get this - an actual good story. Maybe GTA4 didn't lack in those departments, but I just couldn't remain interested in it*. So I'll just skip this one altogether.

Might have been because the PC port is terrible.

He's more noticeable in Revenge of the Fallen, since Megatron actually manages to have lines and conversations in that one.

-I swear, those movies would have been improved if they gave Megatron a speech. Hugo Weaving is a master of speechifying.

Those movies would have been improved by never happening.

Agreed. The first one was the best one I've seen and it was still ****ing godawful.
nope.

And they wont get a penny out of me unless they have a PC release.

Probably because he owns a PC?

Don't we all? The PC ports for GTA games are always ****ty.
nope.

I sold my desktop to pay for roof repairs and an rMBP 15'', I don't regret it. This can do ARMA3 (which sucks oops) and Wargame: AirLand battle so that about covers me for video games.

That's absolutely baffling. What does he have, six lines?
If you think the waiters are rude, you should see the manager.

I find it hard to believe that was worth it.

Was even one fence-sitter pushed over the edge once they learned that Patrick Stewart voiced some minor stuff in the game?

Michael Hogan would have done it for a fraction of the cost. In Canadian dollars.

o no a 3% pay cut.

They really did stack up on A-listers for Oblivion. The actors they got for Skyrim are no slouches, but in Oblivion they got Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean while LotR was still in theatres.

And then had one person do 200 NPCs.
2013-09-13, 9:33 PM #31
The voice acting's generally fine, because every voice actor in Oblivion (all 8 of them) is a well established voice in the industry, all of them talented and well regarded. The problem is the voice directing, which has to be done by someone's cousin or something, because for a game where you can reasonably expect to encounter around 30 memorable NPCs in a regular playthrough, you need to have a cast big enough that you couldn't comfortably seat them at a diner booth. Failing that, they could have at least had a better sense of "characters", so that Baurus the secret agent didn't sound exactly like Varnado the shopkeep, so that the adoring Fan didn't sound exactly like every other Bosmer, etc.

-I won't complain about the "tired old beggars" suddenly sounding like normal people after you pay them, though, since I'm pretty sure that was intentional.

Based on the time period the game comes from, I don't mind that the voice acting isn't perfect. Keep in mind that in 2006 not every game had perfect voice acting yet. It had come a long way, but it wasn't where it is now.

We take good voice acting for granted at this point. We should be thankful to get games like Bioshock Infinite and Far Cry 3 that have some of the best examples of voice acting in the history of the medium.

Games have had amazing* voice acting for a very long time, but it's generally been limited to genres that actually take writing and storytelling seriously. A lot of adventure games have had great voice talent. Grim Fandango and Psychonauts come to mind.

* obviously it's still gotten better in recent years, but I mean LucasArts adventure games of the 90s had way better voice acting than LucasArts FPS games of the 90s.

I know a guy who used to work for Rockstar. He's a friend of a friend, actually, but I see him every so often and always ask him about what he's currently working on. He works for Microsoft now on the Xbox.

When I first met him, I asked him if Rockstar purposely put stuff in their games to get the media agitated and create an uproar. I think he was kind of insulted actually. He said that Rockstar games are the product of one thing- they (the devs) make the games that they would want to play.
2013-09-17, 7:02 AM #40
I always thought the Manhunt games were intentionally created to cause media uproar. At least, when I tried playing them I really couldn't see any other point in them. Never felt that way 'bout the GTA games, really.
