Welcome to the "Will the US Govt' shut down? Is the GOP really that stupid?" thread.

Will it? Are they?

Looks like "Yes and yes" as of right now.

The US government decided to not fund itself, that's literally it.
So a whole ****load of people are now out of work and loads of agencies are shut down.

I'm just not clear on how the democrats were supposed to negotiate their way out of this, since it sounds like the republicans are getting everything they want already...?
2013-09-30, 9:29 PM #8
The GOP is making the bet that shutting the Govt' down over Obamacare will make them look good despite polls showing the opposite.
GG guys, way to lead into midterms with a giant cluster****.

I find this form of protest/politics pretty disgusting. Well I find all politics disgusting, but for me to even comment on this you know it's particularly repulsive. Republicans had their chance to stop the ObamaCare bill in 2010. To undercut ObamaCare now by shutting the entire government down is utter crap.

The kind of people in the Republican party remind me of those that wanted to secede before they ever cow-towed to Washington.

Sometimes I wonder whether or not it would have been better to simply let Confederacy go its own way. Then again, we might still have slavery or perpetual civil war between the North / South due to border disputes, and there's no telling how the world wars would have gone with divided states of America.
2013-10-01, 12:46 AM #16
Both the war and the south's subsequent economic collapse were inevitable, considering that the real main cause of the civil war was the rapidly-expanding productivity gap between northern and southern states, thanks to northern industrialization and the southern reliance upon inefficient farming practices propped up by inexpensive manual labor and an unsustainable hunger for vast amounts of land.

Also, appalacian hill folk are pretty darn republican too, regardless of latitude.

The good news is that the congressmen who voted to shut down the government are still getting paid. That's a relief.

According to the 27th amendment, any adjustments in their pay would not take effect until the next congressional election. The irony being this includes the shutdown.

Well, at least we get the irony of right wing politicians being given handouts.
nope.

Congress is still working, or at least doing what passes for working when you're Congress. The shutdown affects about 800,000 people in "non-essential" federal positions and an undetermined number of contractors; employees responsible for core government functions will continue to work through the shutdown, but if this continues for awhile, we may not all get our paychecks on time.

When this strategy doesn't work for the Tea Party, their next ploy will be to insist on a repeal of the Affordable Care Act as a condition of raising the debt limit, because threatening to cause a default on the national debt is exactly how rational legislators are supposed to behave.

It's been said that the GOP is doing things that, if done by an external party, would be acts of war.
And it's true.
2013-10-01, 7:09 PM #30
And they could end the shutdown RIGHT NOW if Boehner would allow the Senate bill to go to the floor for a vote. It has the votes to pass. But because this is somewhat less than total capitulation to the GOP demands, he is not going to do this.

Boehner is a pansy ass who is afraid of losing the Speakership.

Hey Jon'c, I've theorized in my usual. "I have spare time and a brain way."
My thought was that US federalism is doomed to collapse because the states are too independent. The original founders knew this, and that's why states rights was such a big deal. Ol' Honest Abe derailed that by going to war instead of allowing the south to secede and become a ****ty banana republic. Thinking on this, is the US doomed to balkanize?
2013-10-01, 10:02 PM #35
What we all have to remember is that this shutdown is not about Republicans vs. Democrats. It's about the insane wing of the Republican party vs. the nominally sane wing of the Republican party.

Probably not, since the United States is relatively homogeneous. Even if the United States were dissolved the resulting states wouldn't be hostile.

A peaceful dissolution of an empire usually just means it has become too large, difficult, or expensive to administrate. Um... well, ****.

Boehner's not even in the Very Silly Party, he's just the unfortunate son of a ***** who has to appease them for their votes.
