Slerp is a constant speed, minimum torque interpolation between orientations. It's not strictly for numerical precision. Indeed, for small rotations a linear interpolation is visually good enough that you can drop down when the cost of branching is low enough.

Gimbal lock is a disadvantage but it's not the biggest one.

One way to define orientation is with a set of orthogonal unit vectors, up right and forward, say. In other words, the standard R3 basis vectors multiplied by some orthonormal 3x3 real valued matrix.

So, with an orientation X in M sub 3 of R, which is computed somehow from the rotation matrices P Y and R defining some pitch yaw and roll, not generally commutative, define some system with: 1.) a well defined order of application, 2.) composition of rotations, 3.) preservation of representation, i.e. for any orthonormal matrix X produced by your system you can find some p y r angles which can be used to obtain the same matrix.

If you are an astute reader, you may immediately notice that only two of these things are possible at a time.

Another way of looking at it is from the perspective of information theory. How much can you compress an orientation?

Three orthonormal vectors, so you can always compute the third from the other two. That leaves two vectors. They're normal, so you can always compute the third coordinate from the first two. That leaves four real numbers, the same as a quaternion. Can you do better?

Clearly I'm the other kind of reader, then, because I didn't really understand most of that.

You can define slerp for rotation matrices. However, this "geometric" slerp is computationally expensive and has precision issues. Quaternions are also a more compact representation than matrices. Both factors together give you something rather uniquely useful for games.

Quaternions are convenient in a lot of ways but they're very hard to understand and don't do anything that linear transformations can't do. This is why they don't teach them in university anymore, at least outside of graphics courses and as an example application when learning about abstract spinors and Clifford algebra and all dat.

    THE CONTEST IS OVER

    FGR WINS

  9. #49
We had a last minute submission from Dash_rendar.

Yes, this means that FGR does not win.

    Does not win a non-contest.

    Doesn't win at life.

I always wondered throughout the years, can JK do hitscan weapons? Is the concussion rifle's primary a hitscan?

I submitted Dash's Place. It's a MP level I made awhile back but never released. It's inspired by some of my favorite JK levels of the past and it's amazing.

Man, I wish Ogel45 had been aware of this contest so we could have included Ogel's Marketplace in it.

I have a feeling that was made with JKEdit. It has that look about it.

Isn't JKEDIT the darling of the JKHub crowd?

I don't think you could really call the number of people who use JKHub a "crowd".

Using JKEdit to build a large level is like writing a novel in crayon. It's possible, but it makes you look like a child.

But JKEdit at least shows you what you are doing (if I remember, haven't touch the program in 6 years). Picking up JED or ZED now seems like an exercise in insanity.

Well a lot of us at the hub use Zed. But JKEdit is quite powerful in a lot of ways. I have never liked it, but Darth Dan and Ogel do some great stuff with it.

So believe it or not, my cousin and I actually have been play JK and MOTS a bit recently. Where can I get the maps that were submitted? BTW the dropbox link is broken.

The fact that it didn't have multiple viewports from different axis was one of it's shortcomings. Creating complex architecture was a pain in the ass. From an designers point of view there is seriously no advantage of working with 3D Computer models from a 3D viewport like JKEdit. At least, that's how it was the last time I used JKEdit. Oh right, and it costs money and just was an inferior product. Not saying you couldn't use it to build great levels but just think of the levels you could build in Jed. Anyway, Jed has a built in preview where you could, I guess "see what you're doing" too ya know.. lol

Jed is pretty much like any other 3d modeling software. You just have to remember JK uses negative space.

I still think that the Death of Massassi should have at least 3 major features:

    * The final level pack (thus far including levels from myself and Dash_rendar)
    * The Best of Massassi - Top 10 Levels (or something)
    * The Where Are They Now? feature, I don't really know who should be featured in it but it'd be nice, methinks

So, I just got a job (internship) at Playstation making video games and I feel incredibly indebted to this website, because it wasn't until I found Massassi that I realized mods for games was even something that could be done

So I'm definitely gonna try and make something. I'm interested to see how programs like Zbrush and Substance designer can be brought to bear on little JK MATs and 3DOs, haha

I think you should skip the 3DOs and just make some models for my new Deus Ex mod: Dex Conway and the Strawberry Sauce.

    No.
