Hey dudes, so this "next big game" is almost here! Actually, I think it might already have come out in North America? Anyway, we Europeans get it in a couple of hours.

In case you don't know, it's an FPS/MMORPG hybrid made by Bungie. Actually you can scratch the MMORPG label because Bungie doesn't consider it that at all, but it certainly has some of the elements familiar from MMORPGs. I played the beta (on the PS4) and it's kind of like a cross between Halo and Borderlands except with a lot of people playing on the same server. The controls feel (almost?) exactly like Halo. There's a PVP mode which is basically Halo MP and then there's PVE which is the bit I'm more interested in.

So anyone else getting it? I'm actually a little excited, I never cared for Halo after finishing Halo 1 but this was quite fun when I played the beta.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

"next big game" huh

Well it's all subjective, of course.

don't back down! i found your pre-review to be wacky, classic, and most of all fearless

Anyway, I've heard this and that about it, but it doesn't exactly interest me, as far as playing it myself goes. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts while you play the release version, though!

Maybe I'll turn this into an ongoing "Kroko(dile) plays Destiny THE JOURNAL" thread!

September 8th, 2014:

23:19 – My name is Kroko Dile. I am a warrior in space. Or at least I will be. As I write this it is 41 minutes until the moment of release. It is the longest I've ever had to wait for release. The night is dark and quite brisk. None of that matters, though, for I am sitting in a computer chair which is in my apartment which is indoors. I can hardly wait, but what choice do I have? To leap forward in time? I don't have that power. They have that power in some movies, but this isn't a movie. This is real. The aliens are out there, and soon so will I. I have seen the aliens, for I played the beta for a couple of days. They are slimy, and they are ugly. And they must be killed. And I have to be the one to do it, along with thousands of others just like me. Warriors. Warriors in space. It's like I always say: when duty calls, I answer the phone. And this time it's not the wrong number.

September 8th, 2014:

23:55 - Life has a funny way of biting you in the nuts. And then you look at your nuts and they're not there. I thought I'd let my Sony PlayStation 4 pre-download the game in standby mode. I thought wrong. It's a big download so no fighting aliens just yet. I guess I'll get back to you another time.

It's an FPS that can't be played on PC. Pretty much guaranteed to be mediocre at best. You'd think after all that effort to put it on the consoles it's showing up on, they'd actually put it on PC. But this is Bungie.

Hate to sound like an ass, but I find Destiny as remarkably generic. I can't think of one thing about Destiny that sets it apart from other sci-fi shooters besides the $$$ orbiting this game.

I don't think you're sounding like an ass saying that at all. I never got the point of getting worked up over differing opinions on a game, unless you were in the development team or something in which case taking offense might make some sense if the feedback wasn't constructive.

You suppose to respond with "in my opinion..." in your first sentence.

Declaring that I don't want to sound like an ass, I wanted you to embrace me. Hold me in your strong, Flemish arms.

Looking at reviews and first impressions articles (admittedly, briefly) Destiny is basically a single-player-ish game that can be done 3 players (3 player co-op) with an MP arena component latched on and a leveling system? I'm sure it's more than that, but what's all this talk about subscription fees, evolving worlds, expansive areas, yada yada? Do 3-person parties even interact with other 3-person parties in the field?

I don't get why someone would get duped by "hype" in 2014, as if it isn't obvious that it's entirely corporate sponsored

Call me when game companies do risky R&D to develop AI that's better than what we had in 2000 or when graphics stop being the primary selling point of media
2014-09-13, 2:07 PM #21
i mean, how many times can you buy a game under the first person shooter genre and still be convinced that there's anything novel in the experience? it's like watching those old ladies in the casino with buckets of quarters, still looking for that high, unable to realize that they are never going to get the payout

at least wait a week and read the reviews critically before buying it. "gee, I wonder if this hyped-up 'next generation' game will be nothing it's cracked up to be just like the last?"

if you like video games, there are very economical ways to play the same thing you are already playing. you will still feel isolated from social life and won't pay nearly as much money or be let down. it's also good to find a more concrete place to put your hope, that is, if you have any

For me this one was more of a "people I'm used to playing online with are getting it and I enjoy playing with them" sort of deal. Apparently we're moving on to the next FIFA when that comes out later this month.

The thread does read as though I couldn't contain my excitement at first, but that wasn't really the case and actually I lied about my PS4 failing to download the game in stand-by mode. I just decided to wait out and determine if the full version was actually worth the price for me, but I decided not to divulge that as it would have been at odds with my overall tone toward the game in this thread.

2014-09-13, 2:29 PM #23
Oh well that's much more reasonable. Why would you lie about that?
2014-09-13, 2:34 PM #24
Any game is good with friends. So co-op with 2 others in Destiny seem like a blast.

Hate to be a guy who plays alone though. I bet Destiny for him would be a complete let-down.

that makes sense but i still don't see the point in hyping a game for a corporation. they want people to go around pumping up how "fun" the game will be. i would think that people should feel more dignity than to work as an unpaid advertiser for a company like that
2014-09-14, 12:17 AM #27
Uh, no one is expecting the sales or interest in any commrecial game or company to be increased by a forum post in a dead Star Wars computer game forum.
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

no one targets it specifically, i just mean there's no point in hyping up a game. if his posting encouraged one person to buy it, that's basically pure profit for them. no reason to spend your time virally advertising for a company

Lol, I'm not saying he's intending to do it, it's just a cultural thing in the west that I think is stupid. I really dislike any pressure towards buying things from anyone, and whenever someone I know starts lauding the achievements of some company's movie or game I get cynical. I hate social pressure because it works sometimes, even on me. You may think I'm weak-minded, but I am fairly certain that people who are most confidence in their own free will are the most likely to be influenced by outside influences and not be aware of it. IOW, only people who are aware of their weaknesses can do things about them. I'm probably too sensitive to it but oh well.

In any case, I won't back off my point that video games are clearly hyped to **** by corporations when there's clearly nothing new or interesting about their product when investigated with a cynical eye

Because a magazine ad is completely equivalent to active advertisement by a real person
2014-09-14, 3:29 AM #33
also you're talking to a person who doesn't watch tv or read magazines because they have garbage content and are stuffed full of advertisements

yeah, i always draw generals out of specifics.

i suppose i should take the time to make it more clear that i'm not being hostile toward kroko in particular; i don't really care about destiny. i'm more ranting tangentially about the increasingly aggressive advertising methods and the sorts of people who live lives so desperate that they use consumer goods to affect attention onto themselves, such as the person who buys a new phone and keeps you in an uncomfortable conversation for a few minutes while they tell you about the "features" you have absolutely no interest in.

i suppose i talk about them here because real life is 90% boring nominal conversation about boring menial activities, and offending people in real life has worse consequences than online.

This is a strawman because I never said that and I never intended to say it.

Your whole point has some merit but saying things like "you lack dignity for being an unpaid advertiser" and dragging this whole thing just makes me think you're drowning in your own jizz as you stroke yourself to thoughts of your superior anti-corporate perceptiveness.

2014-09-14, 4:00 AM #37
what was your intention behind posting those static printed ads?

i'm here to discuss ideas, and clearly the thread would be dead otherwise as there is nothing about destiny to discuss. do you not want this conversation to continue any longer? that's fine. you're boring me now anyhow
2014-09-14, 4:09 AM #38
Oh, wait, did you really post those advertisements to mock that i was saying you were advertising for a company? did you miss the part where i clearly stated it wasn't intentional advertising and that it's a cultural blight that people do it?

i wasn't incriminating you for anything, really. i assumed you meant by your post that you weren't one to ever be manipulated by advertisements because they can easily be ignored and that should be obviously the case with me too, to which i pointed out the false equivalency. if you really were just laughing at the idea of you being a shill, well, I assumed you would have read what I wrote. was i not clear?
2014-09-14, 4:11 AM #39
i.e. "What are you talking about I've never been one to aAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH"

fill in the blank, "I've never been one to be manipulated by advertisement"

or, in which confusion erupts from massassians not taking the time to understand proper context

To make light of the idea that I'm an unpaid advertiser for corporations. I concede the room for misinterpretation, but my intent was that simple.

I'm open to discussing ideas and I'm open to them being discussed in any thread that I happened to create. You approached the issues of viral marketing and consumerist peer pressure with attacks on my personal character and with utter arrogance and disregard for the possibility that I might not be as blind and as ill-informed as you seem to think. Your claims of speaking strictly in general terms in a couple of posts are also in stark contrast with your phrasing and tone in others. It would probably have served your purpose better to just make a new thread if you really wanted to discuss those issues on a general level, anyway.

And I'm not responsible to keep you from being bored, so that bit is really rather redundant.
