Good Snow

Has anyone ever managed to make good snow? I keep remaking my snow level because I'm just not happy with anything I do. I would like snow particles in the air or something but everything I try looks silly. Help~!

In order to do snow that looks good you need three things: a highly scalable particle system, alpha channels with reliable draw order, a post processing shader for approximate Mie scattering. JK doesn't offer you any of these things.

If you're willing to settle for falling squares, I've seen modest success using a ton of falling snow PARs. You'd need to make one yourself, though. Also, the one level I'm thinking of ended up being cancelled because the PARs slowed the game down too much. YMMV.

Were those single particle things, or large particle fields in a single thing?
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

IIRC he tried both. It doesn't matter, the bottleneck is in software transform just like everything else in JK.

Did you implement that bottleneck in Gorc? :P

Basically, yes, because I'm lazy.

It doesn't need to be there.

Ah I was dreading a response like that. A snowy landscape is really boring without snow I'm finding. Back to the drawing board..

I donno, I thought the Hoth battle was pretty exciting.

I'll recreate it in JK and see what you think ;)

Try sticking some downward facing cones of different scales around the player with a scrolling snow texture.

Believe it or not, this is how we did rain in Crysis 2.

There's no such a thing as good snow.
