CHAPTER I

Brian Lozier was a man of principle. "I will not rest until my vision of Massassi as the hub of all things JK and MotS is realized," he proclaimed. The fledgling website was off to a promising start. Traffic had increased quicker than Brian had anticipated. People were submitting mods and levels, and they were being downloaded.

Brian peeked through the window blinds of his suburban home. The sun had come out several hours before. "Brian, breakfast was ready an hour ago! It’s toast and jelly and cereal. You’re not still working on that Massassi, are you?" Brian’s mother worried. After all, her son had been working night and day on what seemed like a pipe dream. She thought Quake II was far more modern than JK. She did think it cool that MotS added colored lighting, but it just didn’t seem enough to compete against the slick shooter with the superior netcode by id Software. "Mom, I’ll be right there! I’ll just upload two more revisions of Canyon Oasis." "Oh you!" she sighed.

At breakfast, Brian seemed absent. He was clinking the spoon against his bowl full of Froot Loops. Brian’s father peered from behind his newspaper. "So, kiddo, how’s that Massassi coming along?" Like Brian’s mother, his father doubted Brian’s foray into running a JK and MotS modding site, thinking it a dead end compared to Quake II. He wasn’t going to let it show, however, wanting to remain supportive. "Dad, it’s going great! I’ve uploaded many cool levels and mods already, and I'm getting plenty of traffic." "That’s nice, Brian. Any saber mods so far?" "For sure, dad!" Brian’s father gave him the thumbs up. "Dad, you only have two hands so by giving me the thumbs up, you just dropped your newspaper. You should’ve just given me one thumb up so you could’ve still held on to the newspaper." They all laughed as Brian’s father picked up the newspaper from the floor.

Meanwhile, in an impoverished part of town, industrial smog was suffocating the hopes and dreams of all the people. In this part of town, there was another boy. This boy was much unlike Brian. Instead of a dream, he had a nightmare. Instead of striving to create, he plotted to destroy. And now, this boy had decided that Brian’s little website was becoming too popular for its own good...

I don't know that many people who'd want to carry out their nightmares.

Unless you're [insert Massassian name here] and like to bang [insert another Massassian's name here]'s mom. Now that's [adjective] stuff!

Niku, you raise a decent point. I'd ask you to be my editor, but you'd just edit all sorts of references into my fanfic.

Actually, how did it happen? Could you give us your version as soon as Kroko's diverges from reality?

The fanfic will continue, Brian. All the fans are counting on me to deliver the next chapter of the story. However, be warned that I expect the next chapter to diverge quite drastically from the real history.

Aww... though truth be told, there's one other non-interactive story being written for on the ISB as well called "Clear and the Hopeless" -- I understand you'll have a more captive and numerous audience here though. I look forward to future installments, and who will be shipped with who! :o

By popular demand, the next installment of my fanfic will be posted on the ISB instead. I request a move, but if no one bothers to do that, I'll just make a new thread on that forum for the continuation.

It's over, Eversor. You and all the other Romans erected a crucifix with my name on it, and now I will go down as a martyr who came on this forum to preach his fanfic only to be rejected by his audience save for a few loyal disciples.

If you are going to do softcore porn fiction Kroko, you have to think about the pacing. Maybe ask Vinny how to set it up if this is going to be one of those stories.

There might be Kenobi movies? Who's going to play Kenobi? Now we going to have like 3 different actors for one character, like Anakin I guess.

The new Han Solo movie makes me scratch my head because a young non-child Solo is Harrison Ford in ANH. I mean, he wasn't that old back in the 70s at all.

I imagine there'll be all kinds of movies, some with protagonists that'll seem like rather questionable picks from the outset. JonC once wrote that Star Wars is a license to print money, and now that that license lies with Disney, they seem more eager to exploit it by churning out movies.

This will surely come across as complaining, but I'm seriously not. I prefer for them to make movies. I'll likely see all of them, and make up my mind as to which ones were truly worthwhile. It's not like the franchise was some sort of beacon of artistic integrity back when it belonged to the Great Visionary. It was far from it. He exploited the hell out of Star Wars, as we all know. I didn't mind, but I always wanted to see more Star Wars in the theater. The big difference was that new movies weren't being made, and when they finally were, they just sucked. We might only get a whole slew of safe fan service (like Episode 7), but I think there's a much better chance of some of these movies being decent. Now the choices don't ultimately lie with this one guy surrounded by yes men and enchanted by the perceived infallibility of his own vision. (Unless he lied about that stuff and was only after expanding his financial empire [pun most intended].) Like I said, I prefer the franchise with Disney.

Well he was 35... This movie will be like Han Solo at 20? 25? Eh.

BY DECREE OF BRIAN LOZIER THE REAL PERSON, THIS FANFIC IS SET TO CONTINUE HERE AFTER ALL.

CHAPTER II

”It’s not fair! Mom, dad, I hate you so much! Realistically I love you but right now I feel as though I hate you, and it’s the moment that counts because what are we but slaves to the now?!” A pattern of C-3POs adorned Brian’s pillowcase. The furious boy pounded on the cotton droids. Human-cyborg relations had seldom been so sour. Brian had barged into his parents’ bedroom, eyes sparkling with excitement. Massassi had just hit a milestone in views. Brian had not been greeted by congratulations and a hug, however. He’d been greeted by treachery.

”Mom, dad! Massassi has-” ”Son, I...” ”...” ”Son...just...just back away. Just back away and don’t look back. Your mom and I will meet you downstairs.” ”Dad, is that...” Brian was so stunned he could barely continue. ”Is that jediknight.net? That’s jediknight.net, isn’t it, father?” ”Son, it’s not what you think. We-” ”I’d recognize that layout anywhere. How could you? Why? I’m your own son! Mom, say something!” ”Brian, your father and I joined a room on zone.com that was playing a custom map. We went to Massassi, but couldn’t find the level.”

Dismayed and disheartened, Brian was out for a walk hoping to clear his head. He looked to the skies. He fantasized about a different place, a different time. Someplace far away and long ago. A reality where his Massassi was set to become the prime source of all things JK and MotS. Because right then and there, Brian had stopped believing. If his own parents didn’t have faith in Massassi, why should he? Why should the current surge of traffic and content be but an illusion, a brief diversion from an ill fate to his website? The sky had no answers. Everywhere Brian looked, he saw in four colors: black, red, beige, and white. The colors of jediknight.net.

Click. The other boy, from the hopeless part of town, closed his internet browser. He preferred Netscape over Internet Explorer. His clock radio was playing You’re Still the One by Shania Twain.

Looks like we’ve made it
look how far we’ve come, my baby
we might’ve took the long way
we knew we’d get there someday

The boy was humming along. The lyrics felt just right. Windows 95 crashed into a blue screen, but the boy just kept smiling. He forced the computer off, and stared lovingly into the idle monitor.

You’re still the one I kiss goodnight
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Can't complain then. I like McGregor and hope to see him work with good/decent material again.
