Whats more Xtreme Capitalism, buying and selling literal human beings like they did in the 1860s, or making abstract concepts private property like we do today?

I don't find that even remotely funny and it is a serious problem. I was thinking that if talk of reparations is to be taken serious it needs to be directed towards identifying and fixing the real damage that has been down to a sizable portion of the black race in this country.

The issue of the newsletter (July 2003) is not online, but the content can be discerned via the letter of protest from the Anti-Defamation League. "Regardless of the economic arguments" the letter said, "Hitler's economic policies cannot be divorced from his great policies of virulent anti-Semitism, racism and genocide.… Analyzing his actions through any other lens severely misses the point."

The same could be said about all forms of central planning.
Thanks, Mises, for your staggering intellectual take on 1930's Germany.

In other news, reading to try and comprehend the economic status of the Weimar Republic and early Nazi actions is quite an undertaking.

Oh, you live in Utah, right? Probably be awhile before you have to worry about the breakdown of civil society.

I guess this is sort of the America thread, but what do you guys make of the situation in Hong Kong?

So for anyone who doesn't know, although I suspect you all do, the protests were sparked by a new extradition bill introduced by the local government under the auspices of the mainland leadership. If the bill became law, it would permit the extradition of any Hong Kong citizen under criminal investigation to the mainland. Critics of the bill fear it would be used to target political opponents of the Communist Party. That fear is highly warranted, of course.

Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, suspended the bill indefinitely. However, the protesters are calling for its full withdrawal and for Lam to resign. They are also demanding an independent investigation into the local police's use of force against the population during the protests. Triads have been involved in violence against the protesters and regular commuters, and people suspect the police are in cahoots with the triads in organizing that violence.

China is blaming foreign influences (Western countries) for not simply inspiring but in fact instigating the protests. At the same time, they say the youth of Hong Kong need employment and affordable housing (to not become disillusioned).

It all seems par for the course to me. The One Country, Two Systems policy is a pretense while the real strategy is the ultimate full assimilation of the region. I suppose they'll get there eventually, but meanwhile it's quite rousing to see the people of Hong Kong fight back.

    https://www.latimes.com/politics/sto...n-drugs-canada

    WASHINGTON —

The Trump administration — under mounting pressure to lower prescription drug prices ahead of next year’s elections — announced plans Wednesday to consider allowing states to import lower-priced medications from Canada.

    ...

Drug prices are lower in other economically advanced countries because governments take a leading role in setting prices. But in the U.S., Medicare is not permitted to negotiate with drug companies.

Some experts have been skeptical of allowing imports from Canada, partly from concerns about whether Canadian suppliers have the capacity to meet the demand of the much larger U.S. market.
1.) I think it's hilarious that the United States, finally accepting that they aren't a functional country anymore, have decided to simply subordinate themselves in pharmaceutical regulation to the Canadian provinces.

2.) The provinces are definitely going to ban pharmaceutical export.

3.) **** all y'all for trying. Fix your own ****.

Greedy bastards. Billionaires want to have their cake and eat it to, sucking their own cattle dry and then telling them to graze elsewhere in saner pastures.

(Wow, how many metaphors did I just mix)

    its about branding this days.

Do people really want inferior branding with civilization existing within limits, or do they want free wheeling excitement and wanderlust. Our freedom branding comes packaged with deluxe terror

Oh cool, nothing like a good 'let's mistreat the criminals', soon followed by a 'my political opponents are criminal' statement.

cool podcast. Listened to the latest episode and I think you guys would like it. They get into conservative ideas with enough distance and generosity to really flesh them out but not so much that they become unwilling to criticize them
