So how are we feeling? Nervous yet? What's going to happen in the next four years?

As a foreigner who's never set foot on US soil, I must admit I'm a little nervous about him. Interesting times, for sure. One of my concerns is that Trump may be a jackpot for Putin, allowing him a lot of wiggle room or more.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Can hardly wait for the lauded peaceful transition of power. Would have preferred somebody else but here's to hoping that it can't possibly be worse (fingers crossed) than the past eight years.

I'm hearing a lot about the upcoming administration being incredibly understaffed. Also that Trump plans to take the weekend off after the inauguration. It's been harder to sort out the good information from bad this cycle, though, so who knows.

The next couple weeks should be interesting.

Having been born after the end of most cold war crises like that one, I am sorry to say that the plausibility of the anthropic explanation for my solipsistic existence, in a universe where no single spark actually happened to ignite what turned out to be a cold war into a thermonuclear one prior to my birth, is starting to make me worry about what will happen after tomorrow, a lot.

Trump's presidency is shaping up to be worse than anyone expected, or didn't expect.

I heard that Jack Dorsey has his team working on upgrading Twitter with new features, including Twitter bot, which allows @realDonaldTrump to retweet insulting twitter posts to the bot, at which time the bot launches an ICBM at the offending party, per NSA intelligence on their coordinates.

I highly recommend you guys watch TNG while you still have a chance. Excellent show.

Pick a minimum IMDB score, and work your way through each season, skipping all episodes below the threshold. This site makes it easy to see.

JFC, that must have been the most distastefully populist inauguration speech of all time.

As if every president before him laid waste to the land.

Painful to watch.

He's going to wipe Islamic terrorism from the face of the earth huh. Good luck with that. That's a pretty big promise he'll never be able to fulfil.

Are we going to start talking about all the promises former presidents were never able to fulfill?

It's nice that some of you can stay positive about the lumpenpresident.
2017-01-20, 10:56 AM #18
Just watching it now, he just said "while our military has been depleted". What now?
2017-01-20, 11:48 AM #19
I'm not sure what he was referring to. But there have been stories over the past ~16 years about soldiers being sent to war without proper protective gear and their families ordering that **** online and shipping it to their sons and daughters. The entire veterans affairs deptarment, and specifically VA hospitals which are supposed to be providing medical support to men and women who were injured during their service, is in shambles and isn't providing the proper support to those who were willing to give their lives for us. At the same time, there have been billions spent on "research and development" for fighter and bomber planes that aren't needed and won't ever be successful. All of this (and more) depletes our military and our country and someone should do something. Not convinced Trump will (be able to) do anything.
2017-01-20, 2:54 PM #20
1. The protective gear thing was always bogus. Did everyone in the military have the best protective gear or armored vehicles? No, they had whatever had been determined to be adequate for the job. Of course, as the new war waged they piled more and more protective gear on us and upgraded equipment at a rate I'd never seen.

2. VA provides tremendous support to recent veterans, my father who only served four years got tremendous care from the VA as well. I do think many older veterans have had problems and like any large government agency it's never going to be perfect. Veterans are also defrauding taxpayers at an alarming rate but that's another topic.

3. Mostly valid point on R&D and your other points aren't invalid. It's just that many make the military out to be this sacred cow and there is a ton of misinformation designed to make the issue an emotional one rather than a logical one.

The real depletion in the military has come from the feeling of a lack of leadership in Washington, a sense of hopelessness with regards to the mission, and the fact that political correctness trumps reality.

With regards to Trump's speech, I mostly liked it. It is refreshing to have a president not bound by the constraints of political correctness. Some (I watched it at school) laughed a bit as he came out waiving and thumbs up but I pointed out that he was the only person to take that stage that acknowledged the crowd and I thought that was kind of cool.

My positing with Trump has pretty much been I don't believe he'll do half of what he says and I'm scared he'll actually do half of it. Now that he's elected and sworn in my position is he has four years and can be judged based on his record. And, besides, nobody has greater ability.

Re: your response to my comments: ok. And it's not a sarcastic ok, it's an, "Ok, you probably have a lot more information about that stuff than I do, and I've probably been watching too much liberal media, so I'm going to accept your points and stop spouting off from now on."
2017-01-20, 4:56 PM #22
One of Trump's top advisors is Peter Thiel, silicon valley financier and Actual Vampire who thinks he can inject himself with millennial blood to stay young, who has been described by acquaintances as "possessing the deliberately contrarian political views of a college freshman who hasn't been punched enough yet".

I'm not sure I have a point. I just like to mention this whenever I can.
2017-01-20, 4:59 PM #23
I mean, Paul Graham thinks Lisp could have prevented 9/11. Silicon Valley lotto winners are all kinds of ****y. They don't know **** and nobody should listen to them about anything, least of all an empty headed goon like Trump.
2017-01-20, 5:02 PM #24
You should run America like a country business household Silicon Valley startup: run up massive losses to look as impressive as possible, until you can convince a richer country to buy you out.

oh wait, lol.

To be fairish he did say during his speech that he would keep our air and water clean.
2017-01-20, 10:39 PM #31
Air and water are a hoax.

Hmm, well maybe not, since we can touch them--clearly they exist. So I can see where he is coming from in acknowledging the need to protect them.

(Not so sure about climate change.)

Running a high pass filter through the things that bothered me about his speech (to say nothing of the large sweep of it):

  1. Referring to students as "beautiful". I'm not quite sure that's the right adjective to use here!
  2. Referring to the oath of office as a pledge of loyalty to the people. Not what I learned in school.
  3. Saying that God breathes life into every American at night. I am pretty sure that God hasn't needed to intervene in order to keep my body going since at least before I was born.
  4. Saying that God will protect us. Taken seriously, I'm not sure I can think of a more dangerous idea.
  5. Promising to wipe ISIS off the face of the planet. If we were willing to take out a country or two along with them, I'm going to say a very big maybe? Even then, can one ever kill infectious ideologies completely in the information age, so long as there are willing hosts? And don't would be refugees often represent potential hosts, who would be forced into joining ISIS if made to stay in Syria? Instead of preventing the infection, we just annihilate the human medium through which it could possibly spread, innocent or not?? I suppose Trump has Nazi pre-cogs to condemn all brown people before he bombs them, but this just looks like a disaster that even defeats itself on its own terms.

I really wish Rush Limbaugh would have taken a differential equations class, or calculus, or something. I remember listening to him one morning out of morbid fascination, in which he was all excited to tell everybody that water vapour was one of the more significant green house gases => damn liberals must be full of it! How can clouds be bad for us??
2017-01-20, 11:02 PM #34
I didn't mind the speech, it's all the people he's appointing to just about everything that I can't stand. Ugh.
2017-01-20, 11:06 PM #35
I just wish he would use better adjectives!

"The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of this country."

Does he mean the citizens did not protect themselves, or the establishment didn't?

He keeps mentioning that the government is now controlled by the people... "The people became the rulers of this nation again." But didn't he lose the popular vote? Didn't the people choose Clinton?

The forgotten will be forgotten no longer? Bull ****.

"Righteous people and a righteous public." Ugh. I don't think that word belongs in public discourse.

I lost interest mostly at this point.
