I don't recall ever doing that. His father didn't even have anything to do with raising him, from what I recall, so there wouldn't be any point at all to bringing up his religion.

Nobody ever complained once when I typed GWB for his predecessor but all of the sudden there was outrage at bho and not even for the right reason. If anybody had ever called me out on why I didn't capitalize certain words I would have said, yeah, it's disrespect but all anyone saw was HIS middle initial. His actual middle initial that I never thought about being anything other than his middle initial. And I'M the one obsessed with race, etc.

Okay, but here's a question: Who do you think you're fooling?

Well, when did you stop beating your wife? (giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're actually married, substitute the noun if you need to)

Except there are a few differences.

For one, I don’t think I’ve ever seen MacFarlane post any dog whistle wife beating on this forum.

For another, accusing someone of actual violence is way worse than being accused of harbouring bad opinions, no matter how bad it hurts your snowflake feelings.

Do I get to substitute the noun for something that makes a hell of a lot more sense if I'm both unmarried and single? If so, the presumption of having stopped becomes rather surprising.

I am married, thanks for asking! And I've never beaten my wife, but I'm super curious about the assumption that you, a married man yourself, made about how marriages generally work!

You see how easy that is, Wookie? We can lob facile accusations of domestic violence all day, but in the end, what matters is the evidence. I've learned in the last two or three years that conservative men, especially, tend to believe that it is impossible to determine their motives from the things they say and do, but that's just not true! If, for example, you repeatedly refer to a trans woman as "him", people are going to figure out what you're up to pretty quickly! Or if you call the first black president "Barack Hussein Obama" over and over again, and offer "George W. Bush" as proof that you're not doing anything racist, people are going to notice that there was a previous President George Bush and not a previous President Barack Obama.

You're not as slick as you think you are, man. And I can't believe you even think you're that slick.

The space of possible motives is wider than that though. Say you are around people who say "Barack Hussein Obama", and you just get normalized to it after awhile. Maybe you don't believe the same conspiracy nonsense that they do, but also don't like Obama, and don't feel like making a big deal about it. After a while, it just becomes accepted language in the social group, which gets shortened to "BHO". It'd be very easily to get passively conditioned to use that abbreviation without really being aware of why or where it got started. At that point it's just fewer letters to type, and you might use it elsewhere with neutral motives.

In general, I think it's generally not productive to go after someone's motives unless you have particularly unequivocal evidence. There's usually too much nuisance and uncertainty for it to be more than an attempt to justify your own moral high ground to yourself. Once people start attacking motives, conversation tends to devolve quickly.

The problem is that people acting in bad faith will ride that last little shred of plausible deniability all the way to the end. There has to be some point at which nuance, uncertainty re: their motives, and giving people the benefit of the doubt has to give way to an honest, relatively unbiased opinion about their intentions (and at the very least, what the actual results of their actions and words are). People clearly try to justify their own moral high ground instinctively, but that's not all anyone is ever doing. I don't think that's what Michael Macfarlane is doing here, for example.

I would let Wookie do his thing and only engage those who may have something worthwhile to contribute to a discussion. You're not going to get anywhere with that man, unless you just like to call him out on stuff even though it doesn't affect him in any way.

This really must be an OK Boomer thing because I'm actually shocked how nobody seems to recognize the "when did you stop beating your wife" question. I'm pretty sure Google will explain it. Maybe I'll check after I post this. Anyway, I don't recall ever referring to Obama by his full name. Pretty sure I typically used his initials which was following the convention I started when I referred to "George W. Bush" by his initials, never to clarify which President Bush either as the context almost always does that although I'm sure I probably kept with the tradition of I ever brought up the elder back then. And to refute Michael's non-analogous comparison, I intentionally avoided just using BO as his initials because I thought that would be more likely to be criticized due to the negative connotation those two letters can have together. It actually never occurred to me that his three initials would be considered inflammatory here and if you are triggered by a person's initials there is probably something wrong with you anyway.

probably sex addiction, alcohol abuse, other drugs addictions, CPTSD from the cults, I would bet some form of personality disorder, I have lived almost my whole life at a relatively high altitutde and I am surrounded by extractive industry. I suffer from delusions of grandeur and also consistent apocalyptic thinking but that's probably from the cults.

All in all I think it's a pretty good bag that gives me a realistic outlook on life so what the **** is your excuse lmao

Sorry I couldn't figure out how to type that with the deep voice required to make it an obvious Anger Management reference but you came very close to posting the appropriate response. Just four words too many.

Actually, I got mixed up for a sec. I was thinking about "you people" with the deep voice. Oh well.
