annoying thread!

I'm not participating in this thread because it's not a poll in which I can vote to ban FGR.

I can't tell what is going on here. Are those 5 logo-sized images supposed to be logo submissions for 2017? Or are they submissions from previous years? Also the animated gif is really hard to read :(

The 3 (three) logos from "By early 2017" onwards are my submissions for this year.

The intro scroll GIF just features a truncated version of the "FGR's 2017 Holiday Logo Story" from the post.

I think it's solid.

I'll try to get the "contest" going soon. And by "contest" I mean that page on which I upload all the logos that aren't too crass. And by "soon" I mean probably not this weekend, but next weekend.

Wandering in here to point out that I've won every time I've entered.

The greatest!
nope.

You know, the only time I really was quite irked that I didn't win was in 2013 when I made this one:

... and, IIRC, in the last possible moment, ECHOMAN swept in from the sidelines with this:

Ohh he's a crafty one, for sure.

This is going to be super confusing if you keep posting images that are logo-sized but aren't actually submissions. Also, this isn't really a contest anymore. Anything that follows the rules gets accepted.

Maybe. If a woman can get pregnant by watching porn, who knows what Finland is capable of?

Eh... As you can tell, I haven't had a chance to do anything about the contest. An operating system "update" forked my hard drive so it will take me a while to find the energy to restore everything. How important is this to everyone? We're only ~10 days away from Christmas... Urgh. blujay had emailed me last month offering to run the contest this year but then he never emailed me back.
2017-12-12, 3:46 PM #28
I don't think it's very important to most of us! Don't sweat it.
2017-12-12, 11:22 PM #29
Don't worry aboot it.

Speaking of which, Windows 10 has been pestering me for some "ESSENTIAL & GREAT & TOTALLY USEFUL" update lately, and this morning my computer didn't boot up normally but went into some kind of an American Megatrends BIOS screen while telling me that my overclocking had failed (note: I have never ever tried to overclock anything in my life). Sure, a reboot from that "fixed" the issue, but...

Thanks. While I'd love to blame Microsoft or even Apple, in this case it was an upgrade from Ubuntu (well, xubuntu) 16.04 (LTS) to 17.04 (ultimate plan was to go to 17.10 but it wouldn't let me upgrade directly). I was planning to hold off until 18.04 (next LTS) but I got a wacom tablet and I was having some issues with it that should have been fixed up with the later version. But everything got completely hosed. During the "upgrade" the screen locked up and I couldn't make it let me back in. After a reboot the drive was corrupted or something. I was able to copy all my data off it but like a moron I used "cp" instead of something real like "rsync" and it failed to grab all my hidden files (like my .ssh dir) so I no longer have easy access to the massassi server.

The hosting company has a way to sorta-directly connect (not using ssh) to the box so I can get back in and install a replacement key, I just haven't had time to mess with it yet.

It's enough to make me want to go back to vanilla debian. In fact, after having to deal with systemd at work, it makes me want to go to a non-systemd distro. I hadn't previously had any experience with systemd (and it probably has nothing to do with my upgrade issue), but after dealing with it on centos7 it makes me want to gouge my own eyes out with a rusty spoon.

It's bad but I'm slowly getting used to it.

I actually like systemd when I'm writing "init scripts". In quotes because I think they are more like configuration files. Very easy and quick to write, once you know how. I once read the old joke "systemd is a great operating system, it just lacks a good init system" and I actually think it's the other way around. If they would just pull everything out and leave in the init system it would be a huge improvement.
Sorry for the lousy German

I’d like systemd a lot more if its documentation actually existed in a meaningful form... or if it was debuggable, if help were available, or if its scope were managed. Unfortunately a recurring complaint whenever Poettering is involved in a project.

As much as I might dislike systemd’s scope creep, it’s the only way to provide init with sane service dependencies. You’re pulling on a very long thread when you do that, and it’s not really systemd’s fault that legacy Unix hacked so much together in userland. The real problem is that it wasn’t designed to be fixable. It’s like the software equivalent of an iPhone, glued together, no user serviceable parts, you try opening it up and the whole thing breaks. If something ever goes wrong with it, throw your whole system in the garbage and buy a new one. That’s the Poettering philosophy.

The same with PulseAudio. If it were remotely debuggable, documented, or if Poettering et al actually owned their mistakes instead of blaming everybody else for them, it might be halfway tolerable. But it’s not. There is literally no way to find out what is going wrong, ever. And nobody understands it well enough to even answer questions on Internet forums, maybe even Poettering himself.

But when it’s working, well, it’s okay. It’s fine. You’d never notice it.

Just you guys wait, give it a couple years to mature, and we could all be replacing init scripts with scheme modules.

Quote:
GuixSD uses the GNU Daemon Shepherd as its init system, which is developed in tandem with Guix and is written in Guile as well. It was previously known as "dmd", which stood for "Daemon managing Daemons" or "Daemons-managing Daemon", but changed names to avoid collision with another project.[SUP][10][/SUP]

Shepherd takes some inspiration from systemd, another recent init system, in supplying user space functionality asynchronously as services, which under Shepherd are generic functions and object data types that are exported for use by the Shepherd to extend the base operating system in some defined way. Core to the Shepherd model of user space initialisation is the concept of the extension, a form of composability where services are designed to be layered onto other services, augmenting them with more elaborate or specialised behaviours as desired.[SUP][11][/SUP] This expresses the instantiation-based dependency relationships found in many modern init systems,[SUP][12][/SUP] making the system modular, but also allows services to interact variadically with other services in arbitrary ways.

Shepherd also provides so-called virtual services which allow dynamic dispatch over a class of related service objects, such as all those which instantiate an MTA for the system.[SUP][13][/SUP] A system governed via the Shepherd daemon can represent its user space as a directed acyclic graph, with the "system-service" − responsible for early phases of boot and init − as its root, and all subsequently initialised services as extensions to system-service's functionality, either directly or over other services.[SUP][11][/SUP][SUP][14][/SUP]

Being both written and configured in Guile Scheme, GNU Shepherd is intended to be highly programmable by the system administrator, but it can also be used to manage per-user profiles of unprivileged daemons and services.[SUP][15][/SUP] Its services and configuration are stored uniformly as object-oriented Scheme code, and while a core set of services are provided with the basic Guix System Distribution,[SUP][16][/SUP] arbitrary new services can be flexibly declared, and through Guile's object system, GOOPS, existing services can be redefined at the user's discretion by asking the Shepherd to dynamically rewrite services in specified ways on instantiation.[SUP][17][/SUP][SUP][18][/SUP]

GNU Shepherd was originally designed to work with GNU Hurd, and was later adopted by GuixSD.[SUP][19][
