Weekly Jedi Knight Multiplayer Sessions
2018-01-20, 11:07 PM #1
So a friend and I are trying to organise a weekly Dark Forces 2 multiplayer session. We are planning on rotating different maps and mods for each week. Anybody interested?

Also if any of you used to play on the Zone, I used to be known as PerfectJamie.

Nice idea! I don't think I can personally muster up the motivation to join, but I hope you get a good sized group.

You can run it on mac/linux with wine.

If anyone is interested, we will organise games on discord.

Obligatory accepting and encouraging post to display that we've matured beyond acting snarky in threads like these.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

It was a typo, I meant to say I hope this crashes and burns.

Whoa, I remember PerfectJamie. I haven't played JK since maybe 2003 or so, but good luck to you.

I remember you as well! When I originally played on the Zone, back in middle school, my name was DBF_SuperSaiyan. I have JK installed and would be down to play at some point. I'll hop in the discord every now and then.

Hey, yea, I think I remember you. I never expected my midlife crisis would be to try and play JK MP like I did during the Zone days...but here we are.

Never used Discord, but I'm interested in some legit online JK/MotS games again after all these years...

Nice, my friend and I are planning to play either tomorrow or on Sunday.

I just succeeded in doing this on Linux with the CD version of JK (not sure about GOG).

You have to follow the instructions on the WineHQ page for JK, though, or else networking won't work (see the part:

To play online

Copy these files from the cdrom to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32

dplay.dll
dplaysvr.exe
dplayx.dll
dpwsock.dll
dpwsockx.dll

set these to native using winecfg

dplay.dll
dplayx.dll
dpwsock.dll
dpwsockx.dll

Another tip is to make sure you enable 3D acceleration right away. The software renderer is ****ed when run with Wine.

Any tips on getting JK working on Windows 10? I got mine perfectly running on Win7 (using the Voodoo files), but on 10 I can't get 3d acceleration to work for the life of me (and the CD version doesn't run at all, only the GOG).

I know you have to port forward the regular game and also game ranger, then it should work online...

This is where pretty much all JKDF2 players are now. I recently got permission to post planned games, so that's the place to be.

Thanks!

If I am correct, I should look in #gaming for IP addresses to join. Although the last post seems to be on January 31.

Yeah, there may be an impromptu game tomorrow...

I would love to join. That said I don't actually own MotS at the moment. I'll have to see about getting it if you aren't just playing JK.

Thanks for the links (discord link expires when people aren't there anymore, I take it). But....

The page above tells you how to get it working on Windows 7 64-bit, which I have already figured out (the page was last updated in 2012, 3 years before 10 came out).

I can get it 100% working perfectly in 7 (and 8.1), but in 10, it either won't launch at all, or it will work only in Software mode (the latter when I use GOG without any patched EXEs). A lot of pages link to files on jkdf2.net but they've changed their links around in the last few years so a lot stuff can't be found on the old tutorials. Otherwise, good page.

To be fair, I have not played an online game in about 15 years (back before I used wifi), so I have no proof it works for me on there yet, but I do see if I launch with gameranger, the game shows up in JK Launcher, so I assume it's working. I can launch a game, but until I see that other person with me, I'm going to be in suspense!!!

Still want to try though... at the end of the day I know I can dig up a bunch of old beat-up pcs with old versions of Windows installed, but if this is possible, why go to all that extra trouble? As for me, I use 7, so I could play anytime, but my friends all have 10, so the "how to" is more for them.

There have been a few threads here about windows 10 but I haven't tried it so can't help directly, sorry.
