Thanks man I was going to get this game because my favorite character Darth Vader from the movies was on the cover so I thought he had to be in the game and this was an exciting prospect for me.
maybe someday somebody will make a mod that lets you fight vader but until then don't buy it i don't know if there's a mod community based around this game
This game doesn't suck. It clearly says "Best Game Ever." on the box!
Sorry for the lousy German
Somewhere, in a dark, derelict place, hidden in the dust among many boxes, in a ****ty town in California, sits a Lucasarts brand multi-CD case with Jedi Knight, MotS, Dark Forces, Rogue Squadron and TIE Fighter Special Edition in it.
Who knows if it will ever be dusted off, and returned to a prominent place on my shelf?
As a kid, I tried justifying the cover because of the hidden Cloud City map in the Mots directory. And even though Vader was a skin in multiplayer, you fight Dark Kyle and Dark Mara on that level wtf.
did the colored lighting always look this bad?
nah, it used to look great, the code has just gotten old so it doesn't render the colors as well as it used to
I had a blog. It sucked.
I thought it might've had something to do with the hardware. Maybe this is just a particularly bad application of colored lighting.
It could be that LEC had a penchant for garish colors. Wasn't colored lighting the hot new thing back then?
I remember even back in 2001 or whatever I thought the colored lighting on Bespin was kinda bad.
The player in this video doesn't know how to sprint and it's pissing me off

idk how to sprint in real life
idk how to quicksave in real life
Not just MotS, either. I seem to remember some funky lighting from around the same time in other games too, like Goldeneye on the N64. Probably Unreal too, though I never played that.
I think the colored lighting never bothered me that much because I only really played through MotS one time and I didn't really like it. I didn't play the mods very much; focused mostly on JK. It's also possible at the time I didn't have a 3d card. Did the colored lighting work in software rendering?
No. One time I asked YB why not, and he said something to the effect of “we didn’t feel like rewriting a trillion lines of assembly”.
So I probably didn't even see it until years later when I replayed MotS and didn't make it but 1/3 of the way though before giving up. *shrug*
I didn't like MotS either, but mostly because of the terrible female voice actor. (Sometimes, when I grab something, I say "I'LL take THAT!" like she did when she got a key)
I also hated that stupid anti force lizard, the salamori or salami or salamander or something.

Ysalamiri.
I played through MotS once, never had the urge to do it again. JK I played through several times, though.

I wasted hours and hours of my life on LEC adventure game style puzzles... in MotS! (Last couple levels).
This thread makes me want to try it again. Like maybe I missed out on some great game because my mind wasn't ready for it back then.
I've been watching some youtube play throughs. It looks really tedious at certain points, but in a way that makes you appreciate how maniacal the level designers were.
Just because this is reminding me of it:
Once in a while I go back and watch this. Super fun to see how it accelerates throughout. And the commentary is quite pleasant to listen to![]()
"most modern games don't trust you with that kind of power, to, like, actually hurt yourself when you run into a wall with that kind of speed"
Most modern games don't trust you not to quicksave while in the process of falling to your death.
I love the idea of game mechanics emerging from not fixing edge cases
Jedi Knight level 19 is a masterpiece of level design. Just thought I'd throw that out there. (The vertical descent one.)

oh man. I forgot how much multiplayer was about triggering the other person to auto-kill by using force powers or explosive weapons to throw them against walls or off of platforms. This look so much fun!
lol force pull
Give me your IP and let's play!

I forgot how hard it was to see opponents at distance with the terrible tiled textures, and how annoying the constant hum of the lightsaber is during sabers only matches.
Also, the force speed sound always made me think of the lame "action" music they would play during chase scenes in 90s movies and shows.
