Engine remakes

Despite being of ReTard origin, I'm quite impressed that JK could be revisited like that. Sure, it took them 13 years after Jon`C started Sith 2 to get to this point - but props for getting there!

Of course, it can only become of real interest to me once it reaches the technical proficiency, mostly-bug-free performance and popularity (well, as popular as something JK related could be) of Berserker@Quake 2, EDuke32 or Xash3D (to name a few). In retrospect, "simple" hi-res mods like the Duke3D High Resolution Pack and JKE were actually finished quite fast compared to some other similar projects (HDTP for Deus Ex, to name one, which is technically still unfinished), so here's hoping this engine remake one wouldn't take years and years.

Anyway, don't forget to check out Quib Mask's JK2018 project!

Ultimately... maybe one day we'll have a remake of Ode to Suzanne.

I would love to see a completed JK engine remake. If any of these people finish anything, I'd be ecstatic.

Regardless of that, though, this project's something I actually never expected to see. So yeah, it'd be pretty interesting if it reaches the eduke/Xash3D levels of completion.

I think my shiny, polished black steam engine looks a heck of a lot like Nikumubekizoid's head already, but that's a nice Nikumubekchi-sketch.

Has that engine ever been built? Looks like that center disk would warp.

ICE is dead!

Unless you need to go far. Or tow anything. Or haul anything. Or use the heater. Or go anywhere other than in a huge city. Hrm :(

Sorry ]-[, the best I could do would be adding a :gbk: head there somewhere with the caption "* space_ghost thrusts", but I don't have a GIF editor.

Also on the subject engine remakes that didn't really go anywhere, in its 4+ years of existence, OpenJK (despite its name, it's mainly for JA) hasn't turned JO/JA into something akin to Doom (2016): https://github.com/JACoders/OpenJK

They've never entered mainstream production, though several examples had been built and used to power automobiles, aircraft, and boats. They're used in oddly-specific applications: torpedoes (where the cylindrical nature is ideal), pneumatic pumps, and helicopters. It's a pretty efficient design, though complex (and thus expensive) to manufacture and maintain. The center drive (disk in this example) can be many different shapes or sizes, I suspect the one in the image is just to show the basic design and not really to scale or meant to be in-spec.

My personal favorite is the dynacam version.

I find this new Sith engine remake, specifically the part where he's not going to open source it because he wants someone to buy it off of him, hilarious.
I had a blog. It sucked.

I say we all pitch in and try to raise $10 to buy it from him. I'll give the first $2.

Honestly, I thought you guys were talking about legit game engine remakes. I was about to comment that GTA3 has a working replica of its engine and there is a small community behind it, I think. I can't remember though.
May the force be with you...

And speaking of the JK engine remake from the first post, this thing looks pretty cool:

http://www.jkhub.net/project/show.php?projid=829§ion=screenshots&ss_id=project-829-EzKNy3keWC.jpg

Sure, if it were for Unreal Engine 1, it might even be useful in a larger context, but eh.

I'd like to humbly petition that my post, brutally excoriating Reverend Jones for his off topic post and stating the true topic of the thread, was itself on topic, and as such deserves inclusion in the list of posts wot were on topic. Though perhaps it did not advance the "Engine remakes" topic of discussion, it was a clear and forceful (kinda eloquent too) nudge in the direction of more posts that do advance the topic.

If you see the truth (wisdom, kinda, too) of my suggestion, I'll happily accept that this post, however, doesn't deserve a spot on that prestigious list.
2018-07-28, 9:39 AM #26
what about this post?

2018-07-28, 9:42 AM #27
There's no way I could excoriate you for that post :(

Oof, now that is genuine restraint.

As engine derailer I thereby am humbly forced to disengage from my antics.

Eh, all of that's infinitely preferable to the Trump thread (e.g. Trump thread) and all Trump-adjacent threads (e.g. Spook's most recent one).

And I'm gonna keep updating the list of on-topic posts on the first post.
Star Wars: TODOA | DXN - Deus Ex: Nihilum

We could elect a committee to maintain a list of 'Trump-adjacency scores' for all threads / posts. Then we can add a 'sort by Trump-adjacency' option to the main forum index.
2018-07-28, 10:55 AM #34
And if a user has too many posts (or too few!) with a high 'Trump-adjacency score', they are automatically banned.
2018-07-28, 10:57 AM #35
That reminds me of how Brian appointed gbk as an administrator to handle the admin stuff (approving new users etc.). And then GBK got a life and hasn't done any of that ever since (or even before that). Hoo-hwaugh!
