That's what confuses me from the previews and brief clips I've seen of this game. There's backtracking, but why...? There's prolonged climbing segments, but they don't seem to have any challenge to them (just time-consuming)...? The missions seem linear (that's fine, Jedi Knight was like that), so why not focus and fine-tune the game like that instead?

It's like its design document has gone awry.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that this game seems to have a weird perception problem, and maybe EA knows this. I've even heard it described like Metroid Prime 3, which is bizarre to me. And on the other had, it's a RPG but not really.

Nuts, if only it weren't made by the wrong company.

I'm certain JonC would not be into this, but I encourage anyone who thinks they might like it to try it out.

It's not perfect (I'm not super happy w/the performance on PS4) but it easily stands with or above a lot of the "good" LucasArts games from the 00s.

Also, this is totally subjective, but its flavor of Star Wars feels very aligned with 90s-00s EU to me. It reminds me of JK and JO (and a lot of the novels) in a good way. It's hitting a nostalgia button for me that the new movies/shows haven't quite hit so far.

Will fps be better on xbox one or ps4?

It sounds like the big difference is between base consoles (PS4, Xbox One/Xbox One S) and the late-generation upgrades (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X). Not really sure who takes it between original PS4 and Xbox--I'd defer to Digital Foundry but they haven't put out a comparison video yet.

It calls for you, Jon. Let go of resistance.
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

The local used game store posted a picture of a copy they got in last night with wording to the effect of "We'll just leave this right here." I inferred that was meant as some sort of commentary on the quality of the game. Oddly, I spent a fair amount of time in there last night looking at used blurays so it's too bad that I didn't know about it either sooner or perhaps it was after I left. Not that I would have bought it used for $50 but just to see what they thought. I imagine people looking for multiplayer would be disappointed but it seems like reviews are legitimately positive on this one.

I will most likely pick it up on some future highly discounted digital sale. I think it's pretty cool to get a single player focused game but the gameplay really doesn't seem to be completely up my alley. The fact that this game is a thing really has made me pine for the lost 1313 game though. Would have been really interesting to see what that was and how good it could have been.

I'm going to make a good attempt to get through some Star Wars games I never finished. Recently, I've been working on setting up the old X-Wing game all the way up to making a fancy 1920x1080 layout diagram for my hotas controller to keep the controls straight.

Haha, me neither. For what it's worth, I'm playing on base PS4 and still having a great time.

In particular what I'm liking is the visual design--mechanically it's pretty different from JK/JO/JA but the environments, character costumes etc. are exactly what I would have wanted to see from a JK sequel. Combat is pretty punishing to me, a not-very-good gamer, but I felt that way abt Spiderman last year and ended up loving it.

Did you play previous generation Spiderman games and if so, which ones did you like?

  12. #52
I played the 2000 Spider-Man by Neversoft and liked that. No other ones tho

I got to the final stage of the well received Spiderman 2 but never beat it. Is there a reason to wait for a certain release for the current gen spiderman game or just buy the present one?

So my take on Jedi: Fallen Order so far..

I'm currently about 20 hours into the game and I have pretty mixed feelings. Overall, it's a fun game and while I wouldn't necessarily say the story is super compelling, it's more or less what you'd expect. The combat mechanics are fun, but feel a bit repetitive with certain types of enemies. I'm playing on the second hardest difficulty, and there are definitely parts of the game that I've had to retry about a dozen or so times, mainly because I think the enemies are way too over-aggressive sometimes (i.e you land a large combo on a monster, and without skipping a beat it's already bashing your skull in, and repeatedly hitting you while you're lying on the ground). I think more than anything this is due to my stubbornness of taking on optional bosses that I'm probably not ready for yet, but it's hard for me to continue along when I know a beastie is ready to be slain.

Combat mechanics aside, there's another issue that bugs me about the level design. The wall running and climbing mechanics control very fluidly, but their placement feels incredibly forced. A good example is how often you'll see man-made vertical walls placed in ravines, over chasms, between trees, etc - there is no in-world explanation or function for why those things would be there. They're merely gameplay devices used to get your character from one area to another. Sometimes it feels a little more natural when it's on a cliffside or whatever, but a metal grating or fence to climb or a wall slapped in the middle of a forest simply for the sake of navigating a pit starts to stick out after you've seen it 5 or more times.

Graphics and audio are both great. There's plenty of jaw-dropping scenes, landscapes, backgrounds, etc that make it feel really Star Warsy from time to time. The customization of your character leaves a lot to be desired, but it's there. The lightsaber customization is kind of cool though, but I wish there was more to it than just cosmetics. It's basically like a dress-up minigame for your saber, but without all the actual gameplay benefits of that same mechanic in a game like KOTOR.

If you're on the fence about getting the game, I agree with Thrawn that you should probably give it a try if you're a Star Wars fan. It plays like a less crazy version of The Force Unleashed, but with more modern third person gaming mechanics. It's also very difficult, if you play on some of the more difficult settings. That being said, if you're debating it, I'd probably just wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday or right around Christmas to see if prices get slashed. I'll post another update after I finish the game, but hope this was helpful.

Would like to see a YouTube Let's Play of Jedi Fallen Order from the Creator of TODOA, wherein the creator of todoa constantly points out various aspects of the game as inferior to todoa.

I've seen brief clips, there seems to be a lot of stormtrooper and scout trooper mixed groups over and over with an occasional stronger stormtrooper thrown in time to time. Is it repetitive in that sense?

So far I've run into about five variations of storm/scout troopers, plus a pretty wide variety of animal enemies plus some droids (and an AT-ST). I'd say it's reasonably but not tremendously diverse in that sense. I'm only a couple planets in and I think they introduce more powerful melee enemies later on.

I'm about 3 hours in. I'm definitely enjoying it thus far. It's nothing ground breaking, the mechanics are all things we've seen in other games- but the game is at least good even if it isn't great. And it's been so long since we've had even a good single player Star Wars game that it's nice to be able to play around in that universe again.

I personally don't regret at all paying full price for it (if for no other reason than the IP and the dearth of good single player Star Wars games, as well as my desire to show EA that there is a market for a decent single player Star Wars game that isn't bloated with P2W loot boxes). But while this is a game that I think everyone should check out at some point, I also wouldn't blame anyone for waiting to pick it up on sale at a later point.

I definitely intend to share whatever would be useful or interesting to whomever. Ideally I will make my controller chart an editable PDF so people can adjust it as they see fit. I plan to have a version for all my flight sim type games. As far as what you mean with sharing my setup, I don't know if you mean the physical one, the software tweaking, or all of the above but sure!

Does this new game look like one that will have DLC levels? It just seems to me that EA might not care enough about it to release any new material for the game.

I'm just interested in what functions you assigned to what buttons. So the filled in PDF is enough for me.

Nothing obvious thus far- but I'm still only about 5 hours in.

Apparently there are "no plans" for DLC.
