What do you think of the current coronavirus that's going around? It doesn't appear to be some existential threat to mankind, but it seems like it could be pretty devastating for world economy. From what I gather, it's already had some substantial effects in that regard.

It sucks. I can't tell if people are overreacting or if I'm underreacting. We had planned to go on a long-weekend snowboarding trip to CO this month but cancelled. Other than that our behavior hasn't really changed. Of course, my wife and I both work from home. My company, along with like most of Seattle, has instructed all employees to work from home if possible. There are still a couple of people that go into the office because they don't like to work from home for whatever reason. Some of the schools around here have closed for 2 weeks.
It's pissing me off because my company was finally doing pretty well stock-price-wise and I was planning to cash in my options. Of course as soon as the trading window opened the market crashed.
The way I see it, they're trying to stop it from being like the flu. Every year it changes a little and re-circulates the world population, if we can't stop Covid-19 it will get a foothold in our species and do the same thing so there will be twice as many sick people every "flu season" because there is two viruses spreading about. Well, that's the quick version anyway.

Well it's doing all sorts of crazy **** to the global supply chain which should be pretty interesting for people who live paycheck to paycheck from jobs that sell exclusively stuff manufactured in China. And then when China gets fully out of quarantine all of their consumers will have lost their jobs and be unable to pay for healthcare.
People thought the effect on the stock casino was bad, wait until the effects on the ACTUAL economy become obvious!

I had ordered a PinePhone. But I had to wait extra for it to ship because of Corona and because German customs are Nazis when it comes to CE certificates. Now I had the option to take my chances with customs and apparently they got someone to deliver the phones. I am curious how that will turn out.

I'm kind of interested in the SE 2, but I've read that it's expected to be built on a 6/6s/7/8 chassis, and part of me just can't jive with buying something that looks more or less identical to the phone I'm using just now.
I also like how I considered going for the Samsung Galaxy A51, but now that it's been a few weeks since its release, reports of its bad Bluetooth connectivity have become plentiful. And for what it's worth, as horrible as the Xperia 10 is, its Bluetooth works perfectly fine (on my end).
(I'm still going to attribute this virus to how shoddy the Xperia 10 is)

The first case in my Canadian home town contracted it while traveling through Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. At the time there was only 1 confirmed case in any of those states. The US has done absolutely nothing to stop this.

My wife is a children's librarian who gets coughed on all day by children with irresponsible parents who take their sick kids out in public. There have been orders through the county to do as much remote work as possible for planning and meetings, but since so much of her job requires face to face interactions I feel like I'm inevitably going to catch this one. I heard it causes miscarriages as well, which makes this a really crappy time for us to be expecting another child.

What do you want? It's a particularly bad cold. You want to shut down the whole nation for something that's probably equivalent to a bad flu season, just as the cold and flu season is ending?
Have you ever considered that all of the very concerned experts know more about their field than you do?
You're an engineer. Look at the confidence intervals for hospitalization rate, average hospitalization duration, and infectiousness, then look at the number of hospital beds per capita in the developed world. Even if you aren't concerned about this disease per se, if you aren't good enough at math to immediately recognize that there's still a problem, you aren't good enough at math to have your job.

From a well respected friend and intensivist/A&E consultant who is currently in northern Italy:
1/ ‘I feel the pressure to give you a quick personal update about what is happening in Italy, and also give some quick direct advice about what you should do.
2/ First, Lumbardy is the most developed region in Italy and it has a extraordinary good healthcare, I have worked in Italy, UK and Aus and don’t make the mistake to think that what is happening is happening in a 3rd world country.
3/ The current situation is difficult to imagine and numbers do not explain things at all. Our hospitals are overwhelmed by Covid-19, they are running 200% capacity
4/ We’ve stopped all routine, all ORs have been converted to ITUs and they are now diverting or not treating all other emergencies like trauma or strokes. There are hundreds of pts with severe resp failure and many of them do not have access to anything above a reservoir mask.
5/ Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, I’m saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed.
6/ My friends call me in tears because they see people dying in front of them and they con only offer some oxygen. Ortho and pathologists are being given a leaflet and sent to see patients on NIV. PLEASE STOP, READ THIS AGAIN AND THINK.
7/ We have seen the same pattern in different areas a week apart, and there is no reason that in a few weeks it won’t be the same everywhere, this is the pattern:
8/ 1)A few positive cases, first mild measures, people are told to avoid ED but still hang out in groups, everyone says not to panick
2)Some moderate resp failures and a few severe ones that need tube, but regular access to ED is significantly reduced so everything looks great
9/ 3)Tons of patients with moderate resp failure, that overtime deteriorate to saturate ICUs first, then NIVs, then CPAP hoods, then even O2.
4)Staff gets sick so it gets difficult to cover for shifts, mortality spikes also from all other causes that can’t be treated properly.
10/ Everything about how to treat them is online but the only things that will make a difference are: do not be afraid of massively strict measures to keep people safe,
11/ if governments won’t do this at least keep your family safe, your loved ones with history of cancer or diabetes or any transplant will not be tubed if they need it even if they are young. By safe I mean YOU do not attend them and YOU decide who does and YOU teach them how to.
12/ Another typical attitude is read and listen to people saying things like this and think “that’s bad dude” and then go out for dinner because you think you’ll be safe.
13/ We have seen it, you won’t be if you don’t take it seriously. I really hope it won’t be as bad as here but prepare.

I was on the bus yesterday and had some itching in my throat that made me cough multiple times. From what I could tell, none of the other passengers batted an eye when I did this. Maybe they were just good at pretending not to care.
Started getting the chills and a headache last night. I’d been having a runny nose and then a sore throat before bed... and now I have an oral temperature reading of 101.5. No cough though so I’m hoping this is a cold.

It's not like every single person infected with COVID-19 is going to have obvious, severe symptoms. It's much more likely that most people with COVID-19 experience a pretty standard cold and don't even bother seeing the doctor. That makes knowing the total infected rate nearly impossible. It also means that we can't simply contain the illness by "doing more tests". You'd have to give weekly tests to literally everyone. Now, we might not have as many testing kits as we need, but that's not really the same issue.
Well, I'm an engineer, but my wife is a physician, and so are her peers. My uncle is a pharmaceutical research chemist.
The picture right now seems to be that we are going to see deaths, but it doesn't look like it will be particularly bad in developed countries. Better public health and sanitation, better nutrition, ect, combined with the end of the cold and flu season mean that it probably won't be a really huge deal.
Bad news if you live in the middle east or developing nations though.

It is, however, a croweded major international tourism and cruise ship destination during a season where the rest of Europe doesn't have particularly great weather. There is a reason that they are getting hit the hardest.
The age ranges I've heard as being primarily susceptible to this virus makes me think the media in America wouldn't be making such a big deal out of this if a Democrat were president. Still, I am coming around to believing this is a serious issue not really due to any new revelation but more that I'm paying more attention to it which isn't really saying much.
