So I'm doing an online coding boot-camp (Lambda School) since I've got a stable place to live and I've got my pandemic money. The coding part is easy (I've probably been coding/scripting longer than I've been masturbating lol), but it's tricky making a career change from "homeless guy" to "developer" with out any portfolio or tech experience.

Anyway, I need some contacts to develop my "network" for an assignment, and I guess I need LinkedIn contacts in general. So, add me. And then I might use for assignment.

Congrats! I work in tech, and I wish I could help, but I don't use linkedin or any social media site. Massassi does have a github if you want to help out: https://github.com/saberworks/massassi.net

It hasn't been very active lately but I am developing a python/django project for the dynamic areas of the site (levels, news, etc.). It's almost done and when I get it finished and up in beta I will post the source up there as well.

I never pictured you as an old man with a dirty beard, living in a dingy cave and cranking away in perl php on a dusty terminal - but that's how I see you now.

Actually, that picture came to mind too quickly to be a new idea.

Either way, I'm listing you as a person I know for a career building/networking project that I'm late on. Because using people I sort of know is slightly better than making people up. (Actually, isn't that what networking is anyway? Using people you sort of know?)

Anyway, the course is going pretty well. It's full-stack web development, and even though it's been a decade or more since I've done much with html/css other than trying to grab the video url's from pornhub, it's been pretty easy. JS has been fun, although I think it's pretty ugly with curly brackets all over the fricken place. Lines that end in );})}; are just stupid. We started React this week and it's even uglier! Now there's <> in the mix too.

So yeah, that's what I've been up to in life and in my 'career.' I'm somewhat worried about how the whole thing will pan out though. Apparently many of the other "boot-camps" are abandoning their income-share agreemeent (ISA) tuition plans. Lambda has informed as that they're pretty sure they can make it work. And then they laid off half their staff, so I'm sure they can.

If I can hold it together and get through the social networking and self-promotion aspects of the program though, it might just be the shortcut I need to get my life anywhere close to being something satisfying. I've spent a lot of time languishing in places where my particular talents/intelligence weren't useful. Hopefully I can make this work.

In fact I've been coding perl "professionally" for more than a decade :-| Recently the company has sort of dictated that all new projects should use java, and web-based projects java Spring Boot. My worst nightmare, I hate every second of it. Also I don't have a beard. But I'm ok with your mental image.

I feel the same way as you regarding javascript and react, it makes me want to cry. Not just the coding, even the resulting sites make me mad (where things like links and browser controls [back button, url bar, etc.] no longer work properly).

+1 on the javascript and react sentiments. Twenty years ago, I really enjoyed building (what I at least thought looked like) websites. Every once in a while I still think it'd be fun to do some web development. But the sheer amount of web technologies that seem to be in use today kind of makes my head spin. I'm a programmer by day, albeit mostly in C right now, so I'm sure I could find my way around the landscape eventually. Unfortunately, I don't have the same amount of time or energy to learn new things as I did when I was a kid.

Modern JavaScript is awesome. I'm glad that I can just ignore outdated browsers for my own projects. But I code almost everything from scratch, because the modern JavaScript ecosystem sucks donkey balls.

When I did I got constant harassment from recruiters. After I took as many contact details as possible off the site, one got my company name from LinkedIn, phoned the main phone number and asked for me by name. When you work in a small office of 6 people it's not great when everyone then thinks you're looking for a new job when you aren't so I deleted my account.

Dammit I should have gone with my gut about perl. Who was it that got me started on PHP then as a teenager? I've got a dusty old paperback, a lost forum system called Venom, and a deep, deep love for #BECEDE as a result of that teenage PHP-bent.

JavaScript itself is pretty cool. I feel like React though is a terrible, obnoxious misuse of JS, and HTML, too. There's too many things layered deep down to be assumed as standard or functional that on the surface seem like a complete mind**** of a mystery as to how it actually works. Furthermore, it is heavy. Trying to browse, checkout, and pay for something on Walmart.com, on mobile, is horrible. And I've got a modern, powerful phone with 8-cores and RAM out the ass.. Sites like Facebook or Walmart are just terrible on mobile.

Call me old fashioned, but I like my web-pages served custom fit by a server that is going to craft the HTML and inject interactive functionality as needed.

I was really struggling with this curriculum for a minute because I barely have any social networks in place at all. I've spent many years homeless, many years as an addict, and that's a significant obstacle to have to smooth over while searching for employment. And then I remembered Massassi, and a bunch of nerdy middle-aged dudes that I've known for most of my life. Yeah, it's over the internet, but still. "Brian Lozier" has been a name in my head since I was 12. I've been trying to gross you guys out with gay-things for over two decades. That relationship counts for something.

That article had me grinning, and then getting tired, and then grinning again. Mentions like "AJAX" or "jQuery" are things that I remember from years ago being a big deal, but have never been mentioned at all in my "modern" JavaScript education. It really is a mess, and has always been a mess, hasn't it?
