Favorite JK/MotS mod

Get nostalgic and tell us a favorite Jedi Knight/Mysteries of the Sith mod you enjoyed playing!

For me, I'll always consider Saber Battle X my favorite for a few reasons. I think it helped expand saber combat in a way we wouldn't get to dabble in until Jedi Academy (and saber combat is why I picked up Jedi Knight back in the day in the first place), and I was part of the clan that had the guy who made the mod.

EDIT: Links to the mod for JK and for MotS. Bonus points if you include links yourself for your favorites!

For stupid, mindless fun, the KWP mod. Not sure why but it was popular along SBX, which had to happen at Jedi High School...

OK why not? I never played much MP, but I enjoyed a lot of the single player levels. Anthony Pigott and SavageX always made fun SP maps, and I liked Nebula's stuff too. I can't find City of Arca Terra, but his stormtrooper map was fun: https://www.massassi.net/levels/files/733.shtml

I love everything in all of the MLPs. It's really hard to remember what maps I played the most back when I was playing. I played anything that had good screenshots when it was submitted and I remember liking a bunch of them.

I believe I've asked this in the past and have been wanting to ask this again but David McHale did the really cool Alien's map, Terror on Sigma 51 (? or something very similar, looked for it a couple weeks ago) and I've always wondered what happened to him. He went by Sobase for a time near the end of his posting. I had read at some point a long time ago that someone that he had died. Does anyone know?

I remember really liking Piggot's levels. Played the two trilogies and that behind the scenes sort of thing. I remember at least one point being a bit frustrated with some platforming over lava maybe. I also remember really looking forward to his ill-fated Jedi Outcast levels.

I never got into JK/MotS multiplayer. Oddly, I'm into a bit of Outlaws multiplayer right now. I'm guessing I probably can't ever do JK/MotS multiplayer now. I would probably be pretty bad at it though but I am planning to start a deep dive into the single player in awhile. I'm over half way through Dark Forces on Hard and well into Outlaws on Ugly. I'm getting better at PC FPS games using mouse and keyboard but I'm not really fast enough to be a great multiplayer player.

Skipping the ones that were already mentioned before, like the BoaM series...

One of the mods that really blew me away was RBots. Due to how my dad had configured things for his work, I was never able to play online multiplayer, so being able to sorta get that MP experience was a blast.

And speaking of multiplayer: While I never got to play it, I was always interested in Theft On Nar Shaddaa. Just the thought of playing JK / MOTS cooperatively is something I'd really enjoy.

And finally, gonna cheat a bit and go with Dark Forces: Condition Red. While short, it's an intense action-packed mission that felt pretty dynamic as you run around to defend the station from an incoming Imperial assault. With all the imported assets, it basically felt as if you were participating in a mission from an X-Wing campaign.

The answer is maybe.

Far too many to list, so I'll go with the latest one*:

Magrucko Daines and the Vertical City
https://www.massassi.net/levels/files/3132.shtml

There's a subset of SITH Engine SP levels of "heavily inspired by/spiritual successors to BoaM + ToaM", and this one is definitely the last one in that bunch. If there ever was a send-off for the now mostly forgotten phenomenon of JK/MotS SP levels, well, this is the one.

* = Technically Life of Grismath (2016) was released the same day, and even though it is a definite masterpiece of JK editing, I prefer the 2004 LoG 1 and 2 to it SO THERE, LORD TIBERIUS GRISMATH!

But as far as mods go, the number one for me can definitely only be JkGfxMod

As exemplified in some thingamajig here:

I just bought Outlaws. Never played it back in the day but I'm intending to get to it at some point this summer.

Outlaws is a bit difficult to work with and I've been through the struggles recently so I can definitely give you some tips or advice on getting it running/working "properly" if you need it. It does some really cool things, the Jedi engine was advanced a fair bit from Dark Forces but Dark Forces runs quite easily and nicely in DOSBox, especially with the recent mouselook mod (Dark Forces DeHacked). There is also an engine reverse engineer project that is progressing quite well. I wouldn't be surprised if a deal is struck to bundle it with the games (DF and Outlaws) at some point. That's called The Force Engine. Where did you buy it from, Steam? I hope GOG but you should be okay with Steam. One game crashing issue I had was resolved by installing the game from the full backup I downloaded from GOG. There is a pretty active Discord and that's where I'm doing the multiplayer. It really picked up for a bit right after I joined. I guess I make people want to shoot people/me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, really goes without saying. Certainly the single greatest advancement to the game that I'm aware of. Jon and everyone else that worked on the update process for JK and MotS should receive some shiny Massassi medallions for your stellar work.

Sorry. Forgot the obligatory: Is that JK?

Not only that, but it's also the only JkGfxMod-enhanced release where all you need for installation is a copy of JK. No Patch Adams necessary.

I've actually still not played your levels. I think I will give them a shot after I complete this Hard/Ugly Dark Forces/Outlaws playthrough.

Yeah, none of the (3) people who have played my levels are around anymore ;)

Also, I should take some time to continue my Outlaws playthrough from early... 2015 or something (when I got it from GOG.com, maybe just after it was released there), I think I got stuck in a level that had a basement with an oven or something like that.

(Might have been Blood, though...)

On the other hand, I've also been waiting for XL Engine (now The Force Engine) before seriously delving into (re)playing Outlaws and DF - still waiting to play through that fan-made DF SP level that had a train in Nar Shaddaa.

Since that was the latest favorite of mine for JK, this is the latest truly favourite MotS one - while there have been some very nice levels released for MotS after this, well, I liked this more.

The New Empire Special Edition (Part 1)
https://www.massassi.net/levels/files/3070.shtml

I do prefer it to the original TNE 1, and even though in follow-up playthroughs some cutscenes feel like "wish I could skip these", everything else is spot-on. And yes, both this one and the unfinished, uh, TNE3 (or 4? It was hosted on Jkhub.net which is still down) served as (one of the many) direct inspirations for me to start editing JK again.

(A shame I didn't utilize the speeders from TNE3/4 in anything in the end, but alas)

So I would say that with the mouselook mod there is no reason not to replay DF now. With Outlaws I fell like maybe wait BUT once you get it working and you GET IT it's not so necessary to wait. There are some issues with screens flickering between modes but totally playable.

Hey Wookie, thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. I actually bought Outlaws on GOG, which I find much better than Steam for older titles. The GOG version just works out of the box, no issues. With mouselook!
