Nar Shaddaa is up in smoke. Or something.
2004-01-07, 1:18 PM #1
For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about:
http://sine.geekvision.net/portfolio.html

I was working on a JA SP level that took place on Nar Shaddaa.

To make a long story short, my old computer died a few months ago. The hard drive, with my map and accompanying files, were intact. So recently, a local company my dad is familiar with builds a new one. I made it very, very clear to this guy that it is essential that the old hard drive go into the new computer, with all the files on it.

... So...when he delivers it the first time, he's forgotten to stick it in. I send it back for him to install it. He does, and there are no files on it. I send it back a second time, for him to retrieve them. Now, some of the files, like the textures are there, but some essentials - the map and shader files namely - are gone. My dad gave me some bull**** about the overheated motherboard damaging the hard drive, but I have never known a damaged hard drive to erase only certain file types within certain folders, and still function perfectly. I guess, considering he was able to retrieve certain files, there's the remote possibility that he could try *again* and get them all back... but I don't really know, considering I don't even know what the problem was to begin with. I'm not holding my breath.

So... yeah, it's gone. I still have a few skins, models, sounds and textures that I may use as part of a new project, but most likely I'll just release them as is. Thanks to all the people who gave support, suggestions and textures.

[edit: before you ask, no, I didn't have a backup. The old computer didn't have a burner, and my zip drive is broken.]

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Funny how your maps but nothing else is gone. Is any other data sporatically gone like that? I know it sounds far fetched, but people always poke around people's hard drives when they repair...

I would check with some beta testers to see if they have either a full version of the map, or different ones have different parts from all over. There's some kinda BSP decompile with q3map2, which could help. But if this is the end of Nar... well that sucks. God must have not liked all the people who worshiped you. Sorry. It wouldnt matter if he gave betas out, because they would be the compiled bsps which would be just as worthless as not having the source files.

That sucks. Your map was awesome.
2004-01-07, 1:34 PM #18
No one has all the maps, there were several segments that were too huge to upload, and Sine never thought about zipping just the MAP files and uploading those.

I really don't buy it. Motherboards don't supply hard drives with power, making it pretty hard to fry them...And a hard drive that got fried would be fried. You wouldn't have just some files, perfectly intact scattered around in folders. I mean, there's nothing that can be more supicious other than an istoleyour****.txt file in his root directory.

I actually had the same thing happen, back when I was working with a new Q3 engine game. Took my hard-drive to try to get the data off and then about a year later JO came out. THEY STOLED IT!

eh... i lost about 5 maps when i built this new machine. everything on my old system just died. my backup cds seemed to be fine, but all of my .map files wouldn't load in radiant. the only way i was able to salvage restless endeavor was through a decompile of a .bsp, and getting all the glitches sorted out of it was a serious pain. it really sucks when you lose all that hard work and effort, and trust me i know; i've lost all my maps twice. while it is a sobering event, i often found my greatest inspiration after going through something like that. i'm sure something good will come out of this.

Asp, in the future you should have someone look at recovering the MAP file manually if you are unable to.

You might look into the temp folders, but I doubt anything would be there.

I doubt the repair guy stole them...but are there any other folders missing in the JA directory?

there is a difference between spilled milk and a complete moron posing as a "professional" messing up your data

according to sine the guy put in much less RAM than they agreed on and somehow couldn't find a Radeon 9800

if i was in sine's situation the guy who built the machine would be begging for a mercy killing
