The school system is evil. Very evil. As such, they have made me spend the last 30 minutes looking for an Anonymizer that is free and not bocked so as I can get here.

They seem to have gone on a blocking rampage lately. Massassi just got blocked over the weekend.

Yes, I have to deal with computers that are totally locked out. Right-click is disabled, you can't see C drive. You can't open any folders on the desktop. You can't delete files. You can't access half of the sites online, they all come back with stupid messages like the above, even for sites that have NOTHING to do with it.

Anyone else have to put up with this?

The only plus out of this ordeal is that I did find a new Anonymizer, it'll probably be blocked in a month or less though...

My school's computers were always like that, and I used to have alot of fun finding ways to bypass it.

That's mostly what we sit around doing when we're supposed to be doing work.

We did find a way to get to C drive, it's inconvient though. Blocked sites, as I said, we get past with Anonymizers. We did manage to set up a network drive with a load of resources (Control Panel, Paint, AIM, IRC, etc.) that helps.

But yeah... it still sucks.

I'm glad I got out of highschool before things got really bad... Back in my day, we had the internet, but the teachers didnt really know enough to even try and regulate its use. In fact, most of the people working at the help desk were students.

The computer labs at my university are seemingly completely unblocked, there's just a few signs telling you not to chat, play games, or download offensive material'. Not like they work though, I've seen quite a few guys downloading porn to a floppy disc. How lame is that?

I'd prefer to use that than the unsecure god awful pieces of crap they have here.

Most of them are Compaq Evos. They're supposedly "brand new" but they suck like there's no tomarrow. I swear, almost every single one, though they're supposed to be virus protected, are not.

OS X, while it does have security flaws (what OS doesn't), is vastly more secure than WinXP Pro (none of these computers are patched for anything) and OS X has a grand total of ZERO viruses written for it.

Should I mention that Macs and OS X are far more user friendly as well? To bad, I already did.

Lets stop the debate over OS now, that's not what the thread is for anyway.

Here ya go:

If it runs on Win2k or XP, this will work great.

Go to start>run. Type in taskmgr Hit enter.

Task Manager will pop up. From here, you can end the processes, which allows you to close all the programs causing restrictions on that computer, mainly hiding the C drive and disabling the right click on the mice. This almost always works, since schools always use third party programs to disable the stuff, instead of doing it in windows normally.

If you don't know what to end, keep in mind of these: Explorer.exe is needed. It's windows. Most every other one won't close if it is required by windows. If something bad happens, just restart it! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Sucks for you man... Nothing can be more irritating and frustrating than that kind of restrictions you are talking about.

At my school they don't block anything, but we have to login with some preset usernames and passwords, so they can track our activity and find out who is doing what.
2003-12-08, 5:29 AM #11
It'd be a viable option if the Run command was in the Start Menu, which it's not.

We do have a way to reach Control Panel, inconvient, but it can be done. We have a way around most of the dumb crap we have to put up with. I also heard from a few people that some from of boot disk will make the computers completely bypass the security measures at boot. Haven't tried it and I'm not going to bother. As long as I can get to what I need, I'm fine. It's just annoying as hell.

Back in high school, the library computers were monitored by a bunch of staff members who hadn't the slightest idea of how they worked. In addition to about half of the sites on the Internet being blocked (as some of you have mentioned), students weren't allowed to "change any settings". A bright yellow notice taped to the top of each computer monitor informed students (in capital letters) that looking at or changing default settings (that is, going to just about anything from the start menu, changing text display size in the IE toolbar, looking for a program in the My Computer directory, etc) would be "cosidered HACKING and will result in the offending student losing independant use of the library [for the remainder of the year]!"

I think locking out public computers like that is a good idea for a few reasons.

1) Public computers mean public use there is alot of people out their who don't know what their doing. So locking out the system drive is a good idea to keep people from messing things up.

2) One bad event ruins it for everyone if someone one day decided to be smart and put porno on the desktop the admins of your network will deal with the problem by locking it out. It might not be a perfect solution but it fixes the problem.

3) Your network belongs to the school it is their property therefore they can regulate what sites you can vist. Their thinking on it probably is you can waste your time on massassi at home when your paying for the internet time.

These computers are messes up so we can get to the control panel. We all set our user names to administrator so that we can get to anything on the computer itself. The internet is another story. It seems like they periodically go through all of the history's and block everything that is even remotely entertaining. Some people around here have gotten around the block by changing IP addresses.

I've managed to get passed most of the restrictions at college, simple registry editing through VB using macros in excel works a treat [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

The computer system at my college is terrible. My mate Nick saved some work and it made some of his other stuff into files which were "0 bytes" and every time he saves something it screws something else up. Tim's account is always messing up, 50% of the time when he tries to view one of his files he gets one of those white error boxes saying "Fatal Error". Today I got on one of the computers and it was like a crtl key or something was stuck down, i pressed E and it said "You are not allwed to run this program" or something like that, random letters did random things. It's not the first time, either.

The thing that annoys me most is the fact that they unplug power to the cd-rom drives so there is a constant battle between students opening up the case and plugging them back in and IT Services pulling the power. However they have a new tactic of setting the cd-rom drives as disabled in the bios. However windows still seems to detect the drives and even so, we just pull the battery out of the motherboard to remove the password boot it up and change the settings. lol.

Oh and to get around the restrictions on webpages I use OEMBrowser and I can get to anything (I guess any other browser works, but OEM is portable so I can just install it to my network space instead of each computer.)

I just made up a song about my school. Reason being because I was just yelled at while playing guitar, mind you, while other people were trying to study. I cant help it if I have a voice that carries. The guy was a real asshat too. "He was like shut the **** up I'm trying to study" so I just told him to "**** off you ****" and then about 10 minutes go by and another guy comes out and says he can hear me in his room and that he really needs to study, but it sounds good. Needless to say I quit for this guy because he was courteous.

Ok, so who made them masters of the outside? And can I help it they were retarded and took classes that had finals?

So here's my song it goes to the tune of the Georgia Tech fight song.

**** this school, **** this school
**** this school and damn it to hell

and those words pretty much fit the melody throughout so just keep repeating.

I hope some of you realize hacking through your schools networks to get more access than your supposed to is gonna just get your network privilleges suspended and give them more ideas on how to block you.

Yeah school lock downs can be pretty annoying. My school's locked down on Penny Arcade and I have no right click, run, desktop (i.e. can't put things on there), control panel, access to pop3 email etc. Très annoying.

If you dont see the Run command, try hitting Windows key + R. I assume that the keyboard has one and that it actually works. If not, see if you can get to Command Prompt. If you can, go to c:\winnt. Then type taskmgr and hit enter. It'll come up then. (If DOS lets you access teh C drive, which it should.)

I also assume ctrl+alt+del DOESN'T work. If it does, it's really easy. Just hit Task Manager [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Massassi was just banned today, too. I couldn't find an anon service, but I used altavista's translator. The only problem is that all of the pictures are still blocked.

I have a plan to bring a boot disk to school tomorrow, since I'm the only student in C++ trusted with a disk drive, I'll be able to sneak the boot disk in, disable the controls on my account for good, then switch accounts to the Admin acount without needing the password (Since I've got a boot disk for the computers, it thinks I'm an admin by defualt). From here I can draw my account from the query, and thus unrestrict me permenantly. The beauty of this, is unless they had a reason to look at my account, everything I did wouldn't be recorded, since using the boot disk says I didn't even log in, in the first place. It's risky, but it's enough to get to Massassi, and other sites they've taken in the past.

Ok, you people trying to circumvent security measures put in place are just asking for trouble. Do realize that doing enough of this practice, will get you caught. And when you're caught, expect to have ALL your privledges revoked in addition to what ever consequences the school has in place for "hacking."

If they don't want you using THEIR computer for purposes other than academic activity, THEY DON'T WANT YOU DOING THAT. Accept it, and move on. You can check out Massassi or any other non-blocked site when you get home.

Gandalf: Of course it's worth it.

It offends my sensibilities when stupid people decide that they're qualified to limit the extent of my education. After all, the school exists solely as a service to my peers and I. Misguided administrative policies should be recognized as the quaint and ultimately irrelevent anachronisms that they are: to do otherwise would be doing a disservice to yourself and your community, which is paying good money for your education.

My main tutor usually moans when he has to reconnect a CD-Drive, he re-connects the power as much as anyone, lol. He knows most of our programming projects won't fit on floppy disc and that most of the class bring them in on CD-R. I think that he has finally convinced IT Services to stop that in out main IT classroom, but the other classrooms are still annoying.

It is worth bypassing stupid restrictions though. If in my lunch hour I want to check massassi or any other site for that matter (Within reason, I can see blocking pornography and illegal sites is there for a reason.) I don't see why I shouldn't be able to.

I forgot to mention: The computers also have a device which tells the computer if the case has been opend. so when it has been opened it says "Caution: Case was previously removed" when it boots up. What good is that gonna do? The funniest thing is that there is a jumper on the device to reset it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Really, I hate the computer system at my college it's horrible. If i could afford it i'd get a laptop.

In my computer class, which is the only time I get to use the computer for the most part at school, we've got a ton of restrictions. Not that many blocked sites, but the same crap with not right-clicking and such. However, I know the password for the main admin account, so I just go in there and up the resolution, get to use right-clicking, etc.

You never appreciate right-clicking until it gets taken from you! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

No, if you noticed I said that I went outside. The guy that screamed is a ****-*** . Whenever anyone makes any noises above a regular speaking he yells that he's studying or trying to sleep, even the first week of class. I'm sorry he has no friends but yelling obscenities at people doesnt help.

And anyway, noone in our school has ever been caught doing anything to the computers, the admins are all idiots that wouldnt know a motherboard if it bit them in the arse

Except that the issue here is blocking entertainment sites such as Massassi - there's no reason to be visiting these sites at school anyway, so why bother? Go to school to learn, then come home and do whatever you want.

Ahh.... you got to love the fact that most computer labs in colleges don't have that security crap like high school computers do. Even though the computer I'm forced to use in my 3d modeling class is a Macintosh G4, at least I don't have to worry about being blocked from doing whatever I want on the computer.

Jipe: The only reason I go anywhere or do anything is to learn. School filters are just an obstacle in my continuing education.

Regardless, there are many reasons why I might visit Massassi that classify as "legitimate education". Most center around the various political discussions we have here.

Massassi is not exactly a hot zone for intellectuals or good debates; there are plenty of other good sites with talented and experienced debaters that you could visit before looking at Massassi..
