I must now hurt my school system.

Half of the fun is breaking these barriers! Hehe, they gave us access to DOS to let us compile Java programs... heh that was great.

Our system, no matter who you are, is worse than yours. We can't do ANYTHING.

Yes, I have to deal with computers that are totally locked out. Right-click is disabled, you can't see C drive. You can't open any folders on the desktop. You can't delete files. You can't access half of the sites online, they all come back with stupid messages like the above, even for sites that have NOTHING to do with it.

Anyone else have to put up with this?

The locking out of certain folders (C) or even DOS is easy shmeezy to curcumvent. I find that usually when they block Run from the start menu, and from the task manager, the windows key + R doesn't work. So go find your own portable storage medium (CD/FLOPPY) and go to File --> New --> Shortcut C:\ or COMMAND or whatever folder you want. I figured this one out third week of school. T'was so much fun.

The only plus out of this ordeal is that I did find a new Anonymizer, it'll probably be blocked in a month or less though...

If you want a woooonderful way to circumvent blockings, use OfficeSurfer I haven't personally used it, but people rant and rave about it.

I have to deal with the right click thing too, which is oooh so annoying.

Oh, and Gandalf1120 - Of course it's worth it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Jipe: I disagree. While there are excellent forums for serious discussions (I frequent some of them), I've found that Massassi is capable of matching them. That, and there are many reasons I visit here which, while not traditionally considered worthwhile, are nevertheless very valuable. The people are awesome.

Ultimately it comes down to my belief that my ability to decide what is beneficial or educational is far superior to anyone else's.

Sorry, but no. You've been here for less than a month and a half, while I've been here for well over four years. I think I've been here long enough to determine that there are a lot of stupid people at Massassi, and of the things that Massassi may be good for, debates are not one of them. I've seen way too many ridiculous arguments.

Um, Jipe? I originally registered in April of 2000, and lurked for about a year prior. Korin was my previous alias, and I've had many productive discussions.

Most serious debates here, whilst often having some quite good posts, also usually feature just as many pointless personal attacks.

This is why I avoid the RD forum religiously....er....well not....bah

Lets get this thread back on topic, shall we? This is about my school system begin a bunch of meanies and restricting my computer useage. Not about debates at Massassi.

To reply to several posts...

I don't really care if they think its hacking. Fact of the matter is, while the reasons and motivation behind most of the work arounds has been for personal and recreational gain, it HAS ALSO helped with the school work as well. I've had to do research in one class that couldn't have been completed with out a work around on blocked sites. For another class, I need regular access to Notepad for HTML. Because the Start Menu only displays Shut Down, Log Off, and a very VERY limited Programs menus, I've needed to find a way to get into C Drive or at least make a shortcut to it. The later is what ended up happening. So you see, I may be finding ways around it with the motivation of personal gain, but they are hapering my educational process with a lot of this BS.

Someone mentioned it being a public network and therefore the school systems right to block sites. Sure. I'll agree to that. But they have to realise that if you're going to connect a lot of computers to the internet and make them available to students, there WILL be surfing to other sites. In my opinion, they should block sites, but within reason. Example: A website that gives access to flash games should be blocked. A website that merely TALKS about games in general, should not. One is a distraction, the other is not.

In short, I feel justified doing what I'm doing. The school system can continue to do what it's doing. Eventually it'll get to the point where the wonderful policy of "Haveing computers in the classroom connected to the internet." doesn't matter because they've BLOCKED everything. I don't see that as my fault. I see it as their fault becuase they're to stupid to actually LOOK at what they block. As for school administration taking my privlages... Let 'em. I only have one class that relies on them completely, and I can get by without it. For my other two, one has never logged in right and isn't on the network properly. It's fine. The last runs Novell and the login can be bypassed by hitting ESC twice. So much for security. I'm not logged in, but I can save everything to floppy.
