Aftershave
2004-02-03, 4:27 PM #1
Before today, I'd never used aftershave. I always just let my face burn/be raw/bleed uncontrollably. As luck would have it though, I decided to splurge on a bottle while I was grocery shopping today, and hoo-boy, lemme tell you, what a difference it makes. My face no longer feels like I scraped it along hot asphalt for 30 miles. For anyone who uses a blade and hasn't yet discovered aftershave, I would now like to strongly reccomend it.

I use an electric shaver. Never have I experienced the effects of a razor blade, and since I have acne, I'd rather not try.

I've used blades since my first hair popped out on my face, and I've never experienced this horrible pain that seems to be such an integral part of shaving and aftershave advertisement campaigns.

Never had a problem with razor burn. What kind of razor do you use? Cheap, disposable ones definitely will make the problem worse. It's worth investing in a decent three blade razor.

I use a mach 3. I've never had any problems. Are you sure you aren't shaving with a piece of glass or something?

I have a Mach III Turbo I got in the mail when I turned 18. Before that I just used an electric, but even with the razor, I don't notice any razor burn.

A straight razor? You know, the Gillette corporation has made several advances in the field of shaving.....

Aren't you supposed to shave against the grain? Otherwise, how would you scrape any of the hair off?
2004-02-03, 5:13 PM #12
My face always feels funny unless I use aftershave. It doesnt hurt, just gets really dry and weird feeling. Aftershave is just fun.

I was exaggerating a bit when I said it felt like scraped asphalt. I use a Gilette Sensor Excel and I alternate between gel (for the everyday shaves) and heated foam (when I haven't shaved in like a week - if I'm not working, I'm not shaving). All I'm saying is that aftershave I great stuff.
2004-02-03, 5:30 PM #16
You guys will laugh, but i use ivory bar soap instead of shaving cream. It lets me shave and it washes my face at the same time. Shaving cream irritates the hell out of my face for some reason.

As far as aftershave goes, i never use it. I prefer good cologne. When you shave, you are basically strip-mining your skin by rubbing a sharb object against it. After that, your skin needs time to recover instead of being splashed by an alcohol-based liquid. My dad's generation used aftershave because they knew no damn better.

I switched shaving creams from a basic Gillette one to one of those metrosexual ones with moisturizer and all, made a surprising difference. My skin feels much better after shaving now.

And I use aftershave cos it smells nice [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Yes, soap does have a tendency to disintegrate when used.

you can still safely shave against the grain with a regular mach3.(you dont need mach3 turbo) I do it every day and i haven't been cut in ages. Just keep your face wet and you'll do fine.

I used to use a Mach 3 Turbo, and shaved against the grain all the time with no problems. But then I got a nice electric Norelco for Christmas, so much easier than using a blade.

I've taken it another step further than Spork; I use some "skin smoothing lotion" that's basically a moisturiser. It's excellent.

Gilette Mach 3, here. I ran out of the Turbos. They seemed to cut me up, anyway.

I thought all aftershaves had moisturizers in them.... I guess I've been metrosexual since puberty according to Sporky.

Depends on how often you shave. If you've got a few days of stubble, shaving against the grain isn't so good. After a pass with the grain, going agaist isn't so bad. Also will depend on how thick your beard is.

I don't understand how people use those mach 3 turbo crappy things. I bought one and it -is- like dragging some kind of farm equipment across my face. It's on a hinge at the bottom of the razor, so it's really hard to put any decent amount of pressure, and even when you do, it only pressures the bottom.

The Sensor and Sensor Excel are so much better. The razor is center mounted on a swivel blade and it works much better.

Maybe you're having problems because you don't change your blade often enough? Of course I use aftershave, but here's my secret: I got a shaving mirror for christmas and I shave while I'm in the shower. I tend to shave way more often now, which is nice. I put after shave after I get out of the shower and dry off.

Ok lessee, I use a shaving gel and mach 3 turbo thingy.

1) You're supposed to prepare the skin. There's nothing like 1 to 4 blades of razor sharp metal being dragged along the skin to cause skin irritation. Ideally you should shave after showering when the hairs are naturally much softer (from the steam), you should also use a deep cleansing wash and/or an exfoliating scrub, this opens up the pores and makes a close shave much easier.

2) Shaving against the grain will give you a much closer shave, but it also greatly increases the chances of hairs getting ingrown (causes a painful rash in the process). What you're supposed to do is use a shaving brush along with your shaving medium (ie foam, gel) to make the hairs stand up on end. This way you can shave with the grain and still get a close shave, you also don't get the increased risk of razor rash or ingrown hairs.

3) Afterwards you don't need to use aftershave (also, decent aftershaves don't contain alcohol, ie they don't hurt). Just make sure your face is clean and sparingly shove on some moisturiser.

Now for the ultimate in metrosexual grooming schedules [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

1) Wake up
2) Shower (every day)
3) Wash face with a facial wash (every day)
4) Exfoliate with facial scrub (2-3 times a week)
5) Shave (when necessary)
6) Aftershave/Moisturising
7) [Insert Daily Activities]
8) Wash face with a facial wash (every day)
9) Moisturising
10) Sleep

(Not including teeth cleaning, flossing, hair preparation and all those other wholesome activities that seem to have been labelled metrosexual)

If those activities take longer than 15 minutes, you're doing something wrong [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I used to have a lot of irritation on my neck when I used an electric razor, but when I switched to a Mach 3, that all went away. I usually dont have any problems with bleeding or razor burn either. Also, I've found that shaving across the grain (towards the chin/center of your face) gives you a good compromise between a close shave and threat of ingrown hairs.

Key, is to shave BEFORE you get in the shower, this way. Like say your cut yourself usually the shower will clean it up pretty nice and usually stop bleeding by time you get out. And you just feel smoother and all clean by time you get out.

Shaving before you shower also increases the risk of getting cut.

If you happen to cut yourself, just stick a bit of toilet paper over the cut and by the time you are ready to leave the house you can just pull off the paper and it's all fine.

For me it takes less time to shave with a razor than an electric. I dunno, maybe it's cause I've just gotten used to waking up 5 minutes before class. Also, I only shave the day before I have to work, which is usually the weekends, so the rest of the time I'm fluffy with happy hair.
