British Aren't Afraid of Boobs

British aren't afraid of boobs, so why are Americans?

I still don't understand certain social taboos. We can see naked women in art, naked maniquins made to look almost exactly like women, but real naked women seen on TV is considered porn! Why? Why do the British understand this, but Americans don't???

I'll give you the reason why: *****y retards who think it's their job to get offended at everything and sue, despite everyone else not minding it

Men have them too, only theirs' are (usually) smaller than women's and don't have the ability to provide milk! It's a boob! It's natural! GAAAAAAAH!!!!!

Actually, I can see where the Janet thing was inappropriate. It's on a basic channel with kids watching. Had it been on MTV, I doubt anyone would have said anything.

The breast didn't offend me....it was more the preceeding 15 minutes of unadulterated crap.

Actually scratch that, the breast did offend me, but not in the way it offended a lot of others. It was the fact it was a sad publicity stunt for a fading singer and has as a result stirred up so much BS that more people are talking about it than about one of the best Superbowl games ever.

THAT offends me.

That just down right pisses me off. Yes, it was a good game. But definitely NOT one of the best games ever. This is why I despise MTV with the fire of a thousand suns (as my cousin would say).

Honestly, would you rather let your kids see a guy get his head blown off with blood gushing out, or a boob for only .5 seconds?

Also people often blame violence as a causality for kids to create more violence. So if a kid saw a boob, what exactly is the negative causality caused by that?
2004-02-09, 2:30 PM #16
The US is afraid of boobs because they were settled by the kinds of people in England who are afraid of boobs - Puritains (not meant to be complete fact).
I really don't care about the boob, the problem is that it was TOTALLY inappropriate for the time and place. MTV should NEVER EVER be able to have anything at all to do with the Superbowl ever again.

Theoretically: a more relaxed attitude towards sex and sexual conduct at an age where they should not be seeing or dealing with that sort of thing, leading to kids having sex earlier and earlier, leading to (due to the stupidity of kids) more unwanted pregnancies (I never say unwanted babies - I am adopted; NO child is unwanted), which leads to more abortions, which leads to a higher rate of women who can't get pregnant when they actually want to, due to the damaging effects of abortion. And that's not even including STD possibilities.

Well, you asked.

It's just a huge conspiracy. You see, we British people are well aware of our reputation as cynical, tight-fisted, sarcastic and generally conservative gits. So about a decade ago there was a newsletter that went around to every house in Great Britain informing the household that if they enjoyed the moral decay of public television they'd get cheaper pie.

Now, everyone loves pie, so we were all happy to oblige.

I missed that part of the Superbowl. In reality, complain all you want about the gore on American TV, because it's completely baseless. Watch Desperado sometime on TNT, and they'll have edited out as much of the blood as is possible. The channels that do show stuff like that (and more) - HBO, Showtimes, Cinemax - are premium, and not available to just everyone.

Myself, I'm not offended by the exposed breast. It appears to have been a genuine mistake. It more offends me that such talentless artists whose sole appeal is sex are allowed on the field.

Oh, and this:
Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">A Tennessee woman has even sued, saying millions of people are owed monetary damages for exposure to lewd conduct.</font>

There was never a more blatant attempt to make a profit off of a simple mistake than this.

As for the stigma surrounding the breast, it's pretty much rooted in sexual affiliations with the breast and, more specifically, rooted in religious origins.

Working on it..honestly. It's quite a problem for me to look at the world through constantly bitter eyes.

[Ok. I'm in error. I had misread your previous posts. I'm not mad at you. It definitely was a good game but I've seen better games. That's just IMHO. I'm sorry if I seemed offensive. What does make me mad is people making mountains out of mole hills, case in point, the whole Super Bowl "show"]

Another case of American exceptionalism? There are tons of cases where if you go by Western cultural standards, the US is very different. *shrug*
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Um... Joren, I dont agree with you.

I dont agree that the half-time show was the best place to try the obvious publicity stunt. America has been getting more lax about the regulating the airwaves, mainly because those standards were put into place a long time ago and have become outdated.

I do believe that if the government wants to regulate television and radio, let them regulate the basic channel stations like ABC and NBC. However, if someone subscribes to a cable provider, that in effect is paying a premium for more programming options. I dont believe cable television should be held to the same standards as basic channels. If someone has a problem with what is shown on cable, just like premium channels, they have the option to cancel service, or many TVs now have the ability to block out certain channels.

The woman in TN deserves to be thrown in jail for bringing a case like this.

....and I'm tired of the Moral Majority, Christian Coalition, and all those other 'morally upstanding' groups that believe that everything they stand for is right and everyone else is a product of a demoralized degrading society. They're making the biggest fuss over this.

I'm sorry if your kids saw a boob. Did you cover their eyes during birth, when they take a bath, change clothes, go to the bathroom, and breast feed?

also, saw this from Michael Powell (Colin's son, if I'm not mistaken):

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">"I don't think that's being moralistic, and I don't think that's government trying to tell people how to run their businesses. I don't think you need to be a lawyer to understand the basic concepts of common decency here." </font>

I dont think it's a question of decency. It was a body part. Just like a nude statue or portrait, but no one seems to say a thing about the half naked Lady Liberty on the Capitol Dome.

I'm sorry if my standards arent the same as everyone elses and they are offended, but I'm not changing my standards to conform. That would be like having (not meant in a racist/sexist way, just an analogy so go with it) all white people wear burkas because black people are offended by white people's skin tone. Ridiculous.

Fine, you are free to disagree. But then again, if parents cared more about being parents, I think we would have a much better world to live in.

Look, enough of devil's advocate, here is what I feel.

The major networks, regardless of how you feel, have for the most part a decent reputation for keeping stuff relatively clean. Good parent's know the shows the shows their kids can and cannot watch. That, and the Superbowl is supposed to be one of those sporting events where the whole family can gather to watch, and usually does.

Now, something that was considered a safe haven for people who actually care about raising their kids, and wanting to pass their beliefs down to their children had a safe haven ripped away.

If you are failing to grasp this, let me put the shoe on the other foot - if you were watching the Playboy channel, or Spice, or something late night on Cinemax, and part of your program was interruped by "The Smurfs", you would be pissed, and don't deny it. It flies in the face of what you were expecting. Its called "the shoe being on the other foot" and many of you guys need to learn to do that.

Regardless of your feelings of Christian Coalition (hey, I got issues with them too, and I am Christian), or the moral Right, they have every right to have their say as you do, and every right to find sanctuary in programs they usually do, such as the Superbowl.

And that's how I feel. It was the wrong place and time for that stunt. It's not like people are telling a normally raunchy program to clean up its act Schming. It's more like they are outraged, asking "what the hell happened?" And just because you personally don't find anything wrong with it, does not mean the people who did should be ignored.

A couple of problems.

1) a Bustier is usually a 1 piece. the rip was too clean for an accident.

2) She was not wearing a red bustier. Take a claser look - the red was frills attached to the costume, NOT a bustier like the spokesman said.

Ah well, nothing I will lose sleep over, and honestly not worth fighting over.

My gosh, did I just say that on Massassi?

Joren, I think we actually do agree, just I read your thing earlier wrong.

This kind of stuff doesnt belong on basic channels, ABC,NBC, and the like, nor does it belong on something like the Superbowl where 90% of Americans watch it.

I have no problem with it being on at night on cable stations (not premium stations mind you), but I do agree that basic cable should be regulated, at least during primetime AND even moreso when you have such a large viewing audience of different age groups.

Now, if the superbowl was aired on TNT... people pay extra to get TNT. It's their choice.
