Whatever. Your title is not very clear at all. It makes you sound like you have no idea that Canadians fought in WWII.

Where is that one picture I saw a while ago of some little boat with a machine gun on it and the title said "Join the Canadian Navy" or something like that.

It's good to know that Battlefield 1942 is still being updated, a new country with skins and radio commands and all. Liberation of Caen is a very nice map by the way, especially with 63 other players.

During WW2 Canada had one of the world's most powerful militaries. Our light destroyers (Corvette) were the backbone of virtually all convoy escorts, and we had a great deal of involvement in ground missions everywhere. We were also heavily involved in WW1, and - at that time - were respected and feared.

We used to be the Dominion of Canada, but apparently all we've ever had is a rubber boat and a glock. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

As I've said before, it doesn't really matter that Canada's military sucks. Who cares if the West Edmonton mall has more submarines than the entire Canadian navy? Or that Canada uses what is basically an honor system to guard many of its borders? The fact is, the most militarily powerful nation in the world, the US, is sitting just below them! If someone messes with Canada, the US is gonna do something about it. Probably wind up levelling Ottawa, but that's the price you pay to uphold a Confederacy.

As a (potentially) interesting tidbit, my great uncle was one of the very first Canadians killed during the invasion of Normandy. Private Privat Beaudin. Went to his grave in Belgium couple years back. Powerful stuff.
2004-02-09, 3:42 PM #23
Took Canadian History last year and wrote my summative paper on Canada's role in World War II. For such a small population we put a huge effort into D-Day and the invasion of Europe. We liberated the Netherlands (and they send us flowers every year in thanks) and we lost thousands of soldiers, I really couldn't believe that just fifty years ago we had such a powerful military.

As a Canadian growing up in the ninties, it's kind of odd to see a war video game portraying Canada - I just don't think of us as having a large army.

So, hooray for video games. Yeah.

Canada had such a powerful military 50 years ago because at that point it was still part of the British Empire and England felt it would be better to draw soldiers from its colonies rather than the mainland.

Maybe you should try reading *my* post, because never once did I deny he was happy about it. He obviously is. IIRC, I said:

Thus you can see that I wasn't debating his happiness. I was debating his knowledge of history because of the title of his thread. The thread title exhibits a disregard for the achievements of Canada during World War Two. Even though his post indicates his happiness, the two really aren't in any way related.

Methinks ye needs to brush up on your Canadian history, my friend. By the time of WWII, Canada was effectively a sovereign nation with control of her own foreign policy. In fact, Canada didn't declare war on Germany until two weeks after Britain did, just to underscore that fact.

A basic introduction to the topic of Canada's sovereignty during WWII can be found , and a more in-depth (and official, being from the Government of Canada's website) look here

That or the thread title points out the fact that most WWII games are typically limited to Britain, Germany, Japan and the U.S.

I agree with the title, It's making the the game out to be like, "whoa, someone acauly thought to put a country that had a large role in the war into a war game".

I'm really supprised at all the WWII and WWI games that have only fleeting mentions of our great country.

We acauly had to secure TWO beaches, Juno and Sword I think... May have been gold, American got three and britain got two, or one... don't remember.

But Canada DID have a large role in the war, WE decided ourselves to declare war, in WWI we were dragged in as a colony of brittain, but by WWII were were basicly seperated, We were responsible for making many beach landings and were practicly took the entire country of Italy, with some help of course, But I beleive it was called Operation Overlord (don't get me wrong, that may have been D-day, the italy campaing may have been "operation Huskey", been a while since history)

We alone held captured and HELD Vimmy ridge when no other country could, at the battle Ypres, we held the lines while other troops fell back whent he germans used the gas, a Canadian doctor told the troops to soak sock's hanercheifs, anything that will hold water in Urine, and hold this over their mouth and nose, cancelling out the gas.

Even today, if your Canadaian and wear a symbol of Canada in Holland you are reconinzed as we liberated Holland.

truth is, we had a big role, but it's always overshadowed by the american's, and I'm kinda sick of that, Our troops were known as storm troopers and usualy given the most difficult missions, becaused we could do it, we may have been poorly equiped, but we were well trained and fought well.

If i ever get BF 1942, I'd gladly pick it up since it has Canadian's in it now, not that i wouldn't just cause it didn't, it's just you get bored playing the same old missions over and over again as german, american and british... About time we got included in a game, even if it is just a few NPC's or a few skins, we're being noticed for the hard work we put in.

Put the title and what he posted, and you won't have that problem. In fact, the title has nothig to so with Canada and its role in WWII. He was suprised that a major game is including Canadians in a WWII game, which has yet to be done.

It was the British Montgomery Law that took Italy and Operation Overlord is D-day.

Wasn't that pretty much after Germany has been pushed back to their borders? Montgomery Law came up with Operation Market Garden and that failed.

Canada may have had a big role, and they did sacrifice, but that doesn't mean they are on the same level as the Americans, British, and the Russians. Also, I would wonder what kind of difficult missions you are talking about, because if they were airborne missions(which were usually the toughest, like the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge), it would be the 82nd or 101st that would have gone in.

However, I did read somewhere that Canada had the best airforce during WWII.

Because they didn't play as big of a role. The US had to fight on two fronts(though they did make priorities), the Russians gave over a million lives(though it wasn't exactly the conscripts choicebut necessary to hold Stalingrad, the key to Russia) and the British citizens lived in terror of bombings for years and still managed to defeat the Germans.

Canadians certainly contributed, but they couldn't have taken the place of any of the big three.

Countries like Canada and Australia could never contribute as many troops as the big powers for pure reasons of population. In terms of the percantage of troops of a country's population, around as many canadians and australians went to war/died as americans.

Where it counted, we were on the same 'level'.
