What PC game(s) do you think have the best music? My personal choices are:

Tribes 2
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Jedi Knight series (obviously)
Gothic I & II
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

1) Final Fantasy VI & VII & VIII & IX

2) Star Wars-games (especially JK's, X-Wing Alliance and maybe KOTOR)

For example those, I may post more later...

Beyond Good and Evil. I played it on the GC, but there is a PC version. The musisc for that game is great, and extremely varied. I would buy the soundtrack in a second if Ubisoft would freaking release one.

Any Monkey Island, Morrowind, and Loom. I didn't include any Star Wars game since the majority of them--Shadows of the Empire being an exception--recycle John Williams' score.

MegaMan X series (even though they didn't use real instrumentation in the first 3 or 4)
It's fun to recreate the music from the first few original ones, too.

Don't make fun. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

There is a lot of great music.

Planescape: Torment
In my opinion, a fantastic score. I'm not sure about its appeal to other people, but the exotic stile owns me.
The music is also available at Interplay's site, with the sigil battle theme here:
http://www.interplay.com/interact/downloadlist.asp?Dltype=1

Unreal Tournament
Cool mixture of rock/metal/etc.
Play with http://www.modplug.com

Deus Ex
Awesome soundtrack, especially considering that its hours worth of music in all (aprox. 28 individual pieces, with individual conversation/battle/walking/etc. subpieces).
Can be listened to with the same program as above.

Monkey Island Series
(most fan sites have the music)

Grim Fandango
Mexican style!
(fansites for music)

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault/Call of Duty
Heroic pieces, in .mp3 format.

Morrowind/Dungeon Siege/Star Wars: Kotor
All by Jeremy Soule, all great.

Half-Life
Very atmospheric, with some cool pieces (adrenaline guitar)

Grand Theft Auto/Vice City
First of which has the tracks on the play CD.

Mafia

Etc.

Morrowind has a nice score (better than most of Daggerfall's)... Better yet, it's all in MP3 format... Also, I'd give a thumb up to Diablo II. While It's gameplay kinda sucked, the artwork and music were top notch (particullarly in Act III&V). Also, Unreal Tournament 2004 seems to have some good music going for it, although the original UT had great music too.

Once you cut out console games, you cut out what I consider to be a majority of the good music (nobody can play through FF VI and truthfuly tell me that the music is bad). I presume that you are also cutting out mods/custom levels, or else I'd include Dark Forces, as a few levels contain excelent original music (Play The Dark Tide II, and you'll understand)...

Nobu Uematsu's work is definitely among the highest ranks of all music work... Unfortunately, Square has preffered consoles over the PC... It wasn't until FF VII that ANY of Square's games were availible for PC.

I think the main reason why the music for console games seems to be better is that with the PC, you can simply slap together an MP3 file easily, or a MIDI even quicker. Unfortunately, it seems the makers of PC games typically prefer quickness of production over quality of music... After all, the NES had but four different waveforms at its disposal, but the music for the Ninja Gaiden Series (especially III) easily beats 99% of the PC game soundtracks out there...

Actually, I think the reason most console games have better music is that they're played on TVs, and more people have fancier sound systems attached to them then they do their PCs.

Naw. Most people who have consoles just play them through their TV's stock sound system. I think the reason is that console game companies can make more money (more people play consoles sop they can get much more money) and hire professionals to make their music.

Dark Forces
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

The original Dark Forces music was fairly good... Primarily the ones used for levels 2/8, 4/10, and 5/11... If we count cusotm add-ons, The Dark Tide II: Nightfall definitely gets top marks... How many Massassians (who aren't also DF-21ers) have DF?

Same here, DogSRool. The ones (5) I have d/led are for Genesis. My friend owns/owned two of them, and my uncle owns the other three (original cartridges and console, not the roms [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] ). My dad got a number of roms (2 of which my uncle owns) for the MAME emulator (arcade machines), but I only play a few of them. Unfortunately, their site was shut down because EFront, their sponsor, stopped paying them. Anyway, here's my incomplete list for best music (a few non-PC)
Jedi Knight/MotS

Nightfire

Epic Pinball
Jazz Jackrabbit 2

Medal of Honor: Frontline (best Medal of Honor soundtrack, Allied Assault is just a reharsh of old Medal of Honor music)

Medal of Honor: Underground

You can download some of the music from Giacchino's (the composer) website http://www.michaelgiacchino.com/mp3LIST.html

Metal Gear Solid: 1 and 2

Hitman 2 (disappointed that Hitman 3 will be more "electronica" based instead of a symphony...)

All Final Fantasy games (wish all of them was done orchestrated though....)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

I could probably name more, but I can't think of any at the moment.
