Early-Version Screenshots of DF, JK, and JO
2004-03-12, 11:55 AM #1
[ATMachine told me to post this here. Anything phrased in the first person in referring to him, not me.]
While looking around the Internet and in my magazine collection, I happened to dig up a few screenshots of early versions of Dark Forces, Jedi Knight, and Jedi Outcast.

I thought that some other fans would enjoy seeing these things as well. The screenshots are taken from websites that no longer exist. Each of them shows something that was different in the final game.

Dark Forces:
6 screenshots of early versions

This screenshot has a different HUD in it. It has no slot for how many "lives" you have, and the display of assault cannon rockets is different.

This screen has blue coloring in the health and shield displays. Odd.

Now the HUD has been flipped, with health displays on the right side.

This picture has an interesting history. The first level of Dark Forces was originally going to be set aboard a Star Destroyer. This is a map of that level.

Another screenshot where the HUD is flipped around.

This screen seems to have been taken during use of a sort of "debug mode," judging by the "999" in the ammo counter. Not even cheats will get it that high in the final game.

Jedi Knight:
Several screenshots from gameplay and cutscenes

This is a picture of the Dark Side ending. There are two figures approaching the throne instead of one.

A picture of the cargo ship docked in space. I have no idea how this fit into the story.

[Continued...]

A picture of the Moldy Crow leaving Nar Shaddaa. This picture was never seen in the game.

The Rebel ship from the introduction cutscene is seen in more detail than we get in-game. A similar shot can be found in the game's trailer.

The cargo ship approaches a palace in what appears to be the Dark Side end cutscene. I have no idea how that would have fit into the story.

A screenshot of Kyle wearing black gloves. In the final game he's barehanded.

This is a picture of an alternate box cover conceived for Jedi Knight. It was much more painting-like than the final version, which was a 3D rendering. It can be seen in old LucasArts catalogs.

This is concept art for the Jedi Knight / MotS two-pack cover.

Jedi Outcast:
1 magazine scan
This magazine scan shows an alternate HUD for JO. It has the shield units displayed differently, and the ammo and force meters are extremely different. They probably changed it in order for it to look more like Jedi Knight's HUD.

Ohh neat. But that Vader cover seems too fimiliar...

Anyway, I remember that Artis (sp?) Mine for JO had a different color of the rocks. And the reborns were actually meant for the Academy trainer guy.

I'm positive that the box I picked up JK & MoTS in looks exactly like that.

Quite a few of those Dark Forces pics are on the box as well. If I remember correctly, according to the hint guide, there was originally going to be 24 or so levels in the game, but it was narrowed down for the final release. I wouldnt be surprised if LA actually finished a lot more levels than it included in the game.

LucasArts had a screenshot of an AT-ST in a level using the Nar Shadda texture pack. That would have been interesting.

Thats the concept art for the box. The final version was done using rendered models I believe, and looked similar, but not exactly the same.

Yeah! I had to recollect which came first and, indeed, SotE was released well before JK so it's conceivable that they may have tried a tie-in similar to the one in ANHSE.

Hi. I'm ATMachine, the guy who gave Flirbnic all these cool images to post. I've just registered after having a bit of trouble, but it's all fine now.

There were not just 24 missions originally planned for DF, but a whopping 32! I wonder what those would have been like. But the Star Destroyer level was originally to be the first one, the one in which Kyle gets the Death Star plans. It was abandoned as being too hard for a "training" level.

For Jedi Knight, I've heard that a weapon called the "Tusken Prod" was originally planned, as well as a level in which you rode a speeder bike. I imagine these ideas were tossed out as being too much like the Shadows of the Empire game.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures of these things.

I also have gotten a screenshot of the Mac port of Dark Forces. It uses a 640x480 resolution as opposed to the PC version's 320x200, so it's much higher in quality.

Interestingly, a Mac port of Jedi Knight was being worked on by LEC developers (and was doing well), but the LucasArts sales department canned it as being an unprofitable investment. Very much like what happened with Sam and Max 2.
2004-03-12, 4:20 PM #17
Also, what do you all think of the alternate Jedi Outcast HUD?

I think the Force display is much more like Jedi Knight's in shape, but I'd say the vertical ammunition-indicator bar made the two status displays too asymmetrical, so I'm happy it was changed.

That looks incredibly good for JK. Maybe a little too good. Are you sure that It's not a JO outtake?

Also, the alternate JK box is much better. It looks better than that stupid cartoony Jerec that they had in the final one. Didn't even look much like him, either.

I think thats just concept art. Notice the simularity between it and the Feul Depot level.

WHY didn't they keep the original JK cover? That thing is so much better than the Vader one (not saying the Vader one is bad, of course).

hehe, great shots

I've got an old screenshot of MW2:The Clans here
MW2: The Clans was what they were originally working on, then most of the project got dropped or something and it ended up MW2:31st Century Combat a couple of years down the track(1995)

Firstly that's neither the later MW2 timberwolf, nor the TW cockpit model, nor one of the MW2 skins. Whatever that terrain is, it didn't make it to the final version, nor that HUD. 'Fraid the pic's a bit small, but that's 320*200 for you..

I deleted it earlier.

It's a video taken from a game convention similar to E3, about 10 years ago.

The first part shows a scene from an unreleased version of the game The Dig. The second part shows something that's completely unidentifiable. Some people I talked to on IRC postulated that it was a *very* early cutscene from Dark Forces from when the Dark Troopers are dropped onto Talay.

The watermark "dig.mixnmojo.com" is where I got it from, before that site lost its files in the Great Mixnmojo Downtime of 2003.

Click here to get the video.

I recognize the planet in that movie. I cannot remember the mission or the planet name, but I am 99% positive that it is seen in a cutscene during one of the X-Wing campaigns. Vader descends in a Lamba Class shuttle to the planet, and lands on a stone structure which is coming up out of the ocean. He then gets out chokes a purple clad general for attempting to poison Palpatine's food, if I remember correctly. I might be wrong and it could be a TIE Fighter cutscene, but I know it's at least one of the two.

Cazor: Thats the "repp" weapon mesh thats in JK . . . all the models are there, but theres nothing else for it. It was problaby a weapon that was originally planned but scrapped during production... I used to give the weapon to Stormtroopers with a large laser bolt. Instant snipers.... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

As for the location . . . it vastly resimbles the hallway from the first level of JK, save for the fact that the right side should open out to a large window....
