Does anyone here have lucid dreams?
2004-03-16, 6:34 PM #1
Lucid dreaming is where you can take control of your dreams and turn them into what you want instead of just letting it run its course.

The trick is to realize that you are dreaming. Once you realize this, you next have to find your "hands." Once you do this, you can manipulate things in your dream. It's like a naturally-provided halucination trip.

I managed to pull this off last night, but I had to wake up before i really got into it. It only seems to work on the last dream that you have before you wake up, because your dreams always become more complex and memorable as the night progresses, the last one being the most complicated and the most vivid.

I find that lucid dreaming is easier If i go back to sleep after getting up to get a drink, etc. Perhaps the act of real-life motion helps my brain carry virtual motion over into my dreams, maybe.

Post your lucid dreaming experiences if you've had any.

My most memorable experience was when I had a nightmare recently where I was being hunted by some shadowy threatning creature. I woke up a few times, but the dream kept repeating until the last instance of it. In my dream, I was cornered, and the creature was closing in. I loked down at where my hands would be, and I saw that I had hands in my dream and that I could move them. I imagined that I was holding a weapons, and then suddenly there it was. I then procedwed to blow the creature away.

I've seen some of lucid dreams, but the best one was the one where I dreamt of making great levels in JED. Unfortunately, that was only a dream, and I have only built 1% of the things I built in that dream. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]

The entire concept is rather controversial. The problem with it is that while you may actually be sleeping, you're probably not actually dreaming. In order to fully "dream" the body has to slip into Rapid Eye Movement sleep. At this level of conciousness, a person has no control over what the mind presents itself. So, if you have control over your dream, it most likely won't happen at REM sleep. It's much more like an interactive daydream. You're still concious enough to act in response to certain stimuli. However, you're not recieving the relaxing sleep that is REM.

There are cases of people going insane because they dream, but they can't sleep. Weird eh? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I dunno, I had a dream last night that freaked me out. Mainly because I've never had a dream before with religious connotations and this one was kind of in your face all about it... but I digress...

I remembered something else:

If you are having a nightmare and things get too intensefor you, try spinning around in your dream. (In other words, try spinning around in circles like you did when you were a kid)

For some reason, this causes the whole scene to cghange and you wind up with something totally different. Perhaps its because the brain has trouble keeping a lock on a dream sequence when you forcefully interrupt it by such drastic interactivity that it must start a new dream sequence.

I hope I remember how to do this the next time I get a nightmare and spawning a weapon won't work.

A cheat code for getting a lucid dream is to set your alarm for several hours before oyu normally get up. When it goes off, turnm it off and let yourself crash. Instant sleep.

(an obstacle to lucid dreaming is having a lot of stuff going on in your brain when you first go to bed. When I can't sleep, I listen for a sound and sort of drift on it for as long as i can.)

Lucid dreaming is awesome-- it's as close as we can get to being in the matrix where we can break all the rules and do anything that we want.

I used to be able to control my dreams a whole lot a few years ago, but lately my sleep has been horribly sporadic and short that I can't really anymore. It really is interesting to experience.

However, some "suppliments" like DMAE can enhance these lucid dreams.

Nah, you shouldn't need that. Lucid dreaming is fully achievable without having to take anything. You have to condition yourself to accept the possilility that you are dreaming every time something strange happens, even if you think that you are awake. If something impossible seems to happen, then you are probably dreaming. In that case, try doing something that you couldn't possibly do in real life. Be creative. I try to shoot force lighting out of my hands. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] If it works, then you are well on your way to turning your dream into your personal stomping grounds for the evening. (If it is real, nothing will happen, obviously.)

These reality checks are called dream cues.

Generally when I control my dream I fly. It's not graceful flying though. It usually involves sort of a walk/run into air that gradually gets more dense. After a while in the air, I finally begin to glide and so and such. I don't know why I fly in this way, and not more smoothly, but it's the only way I can do it.

Yeah, you just have to condition yourself. I have lucid dreams too, they're fun [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

The trick is to realise you are dreaming, then not wake up. Dreams are surprisingly repetitive, the mind often recycles objects, sights, sounds from one dream to the next. All you have to do is program your mind to recognise such an object (or whatever) so you realise you are dreaming. The best way to start is by writing down what was in your dream right after you wake up. Keep a pen and paper by the bed, you'll be surprised how repetitive some of your dreams are.

Using a crutch (scent, sound, feeling, chemical etc.) to achieve lucidity is a sure way to build a dependence on that system of help. I've been practicing Astral projection and lucid dreams for more than 5 years, and can say that it's in no way neccessary or recomended to use anything as assistance.

Achieving lucidity in a dream is difficult to master, but isn't all that uncommon to achieve accidently. It occurs during the stage of sleep just prior to REM sleep. So they are, in fact, more like interactive day-dreams.

It's harder and harder for me to achieve lucidity now, though, as my insomnia has worsened over the years. It used to be I'd crash for 3-6 hours at a time, so dreaming was easy. Nowadays, though, I hardly get 1 or two hours of sleep, making it more difficult. REM sleep, on average, only takes 90 minutes to achieve. But for my active practice, I usually don't end up lucid until 2 or 3 hours in. This is because the human enters and exits stages of REM sleep multiple times in an evening, each decreasing in length of time, but occuring more and more often.

Common methods of achieving lucidity is to check the time often in real life. This builds up a habit. It needs to be on a regular basis, though. To avoid OCD, I usually recommend that peoeple instead check their watch when a certain event happens. When you see or hear a certain word, check your watch. When a door opens, check your watch.

Another one is to ask yourself regularly "Am I Dreaming?". Making this a habit increases the chance of this happening during a dream.

The point is to make these things habit in REAL LIFE. Once it's a habit, and it occurs in a dream, it makes it very likely that you'll realize you're in a dream. Your watch, in the dream, will be blank or distorted. UNLESS the time is symbolic in some way during your dream. The question "Am I dreaming" will simply be answered.

Once you realize you're dreaming, 90% of the time, it'll be so startling that you'll wake up. This is why it takes practice to be able to do it consistently. It took me months to be able to do it more than 3 times, whereas before I was unable to sleep as much (but after much practice), I could do it nightly.

These are just short guidelines, and in reality it is much harder to achieve consistently. But it can be very rewarding and supply valuable insights into your subconscious. I honestly don't recommend abusing this ability (violence, sex, etc) as it can lead to real life consequences. It can easily (not joking) desensitize you to those things. But it's okay to play around with it every once in a while.

I was just thinking that. I remember when I was a kid and had nightmares, my dad told me that dreams were like television shows, and all I had to do was "change the channel." Interesting enough, I was able to control my dreams only when I had a nightmare, since I haven't had a nightmare since I was about eight years old or so, I haven't been able to control them.

Yeah.. I had one of those dreams, I was walking into this town, it was an older looking era. Just when I walked into that town I looked down and noticed my hands and arms, which is weird.. buut yeah I did and then looked on my side and noticed I had a katana attached to my belt. So I noticed that there was a coliseum at the far end of town, being how adventurous I was I dared to step into it. Soon I pictured having 5 guys on each side of me, ready to fight. I grabbed a hold of the katana and put myself into a ready stance. I noticed these demons of some sort coming at us and we just totally kicked their booty. haha. I remember each bit of it also. Me taking my katana and jabbing it into their necks, blood shedding everywhere. It wasn't a pretty site, but I thought it was great. Then at the end I whiped blood off my face and smiled at everyone else and we walked out of the coliseum and that was the end.. Really lame, I know but to me that was awesome.

I used to do this, but not for that reason. It's more like a mind trick. When you wake up, most people just want to go right back to sleep and sleep for another few hours. This is kind of like a trick to getting that feeling. It seems like you've had more sleep than you intended on having, and it just feels good to wake up thinking you got to get up and get ready, and realize that you still have more sleep time! There is a night patch you can wear over your eyes that detects when you enter REM sleep then flashes soft red light on the underside of the patch to bring you into a Lucid Dream state.

I had one a while ago where I forced myself to pick up a newspaper and read it. The words appeared as I read along it. It was a bizarre mishmash of words from Finnish, Swedish, French and German. In addition there were a whole lote of random filler words that made no sense what so ever. It looked like a run-on Aphex Twin song listing. Cool stuff.

You know how people sometimes say "pinch yourself to make sure your not dreaming"? Well, one time I was having a dream, and something bad happened (Can't remember what). I didn't want it to be true, so I pinched myself to see if I would wake up - I didn't - It just hurt, so i still thought it was real.
Pinching yourself in your dream doesn't work for me.
I've also tried reading while in a dream, but I find I can't - I think the side of your brain used for reading is dormant while dreaming, so technically you cant read.
I rarely have lucid dreams, When I do, they're a lot of fun, but never last long before I wake up.

When I realize that it's a dream, I always wake up. I've actually had people in my dreams tell me that I'm dreaming, and I usually wake up almost immediately.

I'm a lucid dreamer. The only dreams I actually REMEMBER are my lucid ones. I'm a very heavy sleeper who rarely remember ANY dreams.

It just came naturally to me, a few years ago. In dreams, I really like meeting new, fascinating people and talk to them.

I feel your pain, I have those often. It's really a let down, having all the joy in the world with her, only to wake up and realize I was dreaming.

Also, like DrkJedi said, when I was younger I'de have those often, but only as a nightmare. It is very real to, my heart would race very fast and I'd wake up sweating cold sweat. One of them, I dreamed I tripped over my stairs and flew like, 200 mph through the wall and didn't stop going until I collided with a cliff somewhere out in Texas I think (I live in Massachusetts)? But, it's very frightning at times.

1) change your massassi name HAHAHA
2) try to find something to wake up... I needed to close my eyes. But now it doesnt work anymore
3) try to think on the good things you did that day, not the bad. Except if somebody you know died, or something els really bad. Then you need to think about them, doesnt matter what the nightmare does

I had one of those once, Ive tried and tried to do it again but it never works, and the one I had didnt last long.

[dream_flashback_screenwaves_thingy]

I was in class, normal things were happening then when I realized i couldnt read anything, everyone disappeared, the lights turned off, and I was alone. So I realized it was a dream and I walked around for a min, and for no reason at all threw a desk into the wall, which to my surprise caused some kinda wierd physical warp in the wall.... i remember that then i woke up. *sigh*

I've only ever had two of those. The first one, I was in my church for some reason, when I realized I was dreaming? Once I was sure I was dreaming, I figured, what the hell? And went crazy trashing the place. Thrwoing chairs everywhere, breaking windows, etc. Then I woke up (It didn't last long, once I realized it was a dream it seemed like I only had a minute).

The second one, these punks were trying to take me down in a gun fight. I realized this HAD to be a dream, and I spawned an assault shotgun in my hands. It was awesome! It felt like a very real gunfight, and yet, I knew it was a dream. I took cover, heck, I even slowed down time to watch the bullets whiz past. I even got shot a few time, with no real consequence. Needless to say, I capped the punks. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
