I have actually seriously worried about that, I fear I am a really good candidate for that kind of situation. I ALLWAYS dream, even if I fall asleep for 5 minuets I will have a dream (sometimes lasting 2 hours+ dream time, ive even pushed 20 minuets sleep to nearly 2 weeks dream time on occasion). When I first wake up in the morning, I can usually remember 3-4 separate dreams, but I usually forget them within a half hour (I have learned that if I replay a dream over and over in my head during that first half hour I wont forget it, but if I don’t its gone forever). Additionally, I usually know that there were dreams before those, but I don’t remember them when I wake up. I have also rarely if ever woken up having not dreamed. To add to this, I never have problems falling asleep. If I want to I can be asleep within about 5-10 minuets Max no matter where or when.
I also seem to have more Vivid Dreams than most people. I know full out that I experience all five senses (Sight, Sound, Touch, Taste, and smell) in most of my dreams (and yes, I dream in colors). To add to the confusion, over the last few years I have developed the ability to Dream Memories, that is, I seem to be able to create full, detailed, and specific Memories within my dreams of things that have never happened either in the real world or in other dreams. Some of these Memories are frightenly vivid and complete (everything from knowing how you first met someone created within a dream, to being able to recollect a certain road goes to when you just turned in a different direction, to remembering how you felt and who you were with when you first visited a place). Also, I have never had problems reading in dreams, nor writing. I also have hear real music, music that does not exist in real life (Damned if I can remember the melodies for long though), this includes classical music, vocal, jazz, Rock and Roll, and even some Light Heavy Metal (I’m not fond of the stuff, but It still shows up), most of this comes from a logical source in the dream (Band, record, person singing), and often falls into the Memory category, but I do clearly hear them.
My dreams also tend to focus on environments, situations, feelings, ideas, histories, and stories and much less on actual events or actions, but there is still plenty of interaction. Its very very rare that I every have to fear for my life, instead, if I ever feel fear its more of the fear of loosing a war/loved-one/lifestyle than actual death (I’ve also given my live up in dreams to save these things). But actually nightmares are very rare for me, many dreams have unpleasant bits in them, but overall I cannot call them Nightmares.
As for the lucid part, that’s where things get stranger still: I am usually fully aware that I am dreaming and have full control over a dream, but I chose to rescind it. To put how it feels in Geeky terms, Its like being the DM and a Player in an RPG at the same time. If I want to change something, I can, but most of the time I just take on my role in the dream (at which point It never occurs to me that I’m dreaming or that I could change things, but it also never fully leaves my mind). I have also developed the ability to do things in the real world without actually having to "leave" dreaming. These are things like checking the time, going to the bathroom, even talking to some people (Answering the phone is always fun in this mindset, ask Majiir if he ever posts again about Sunday mornings to find more about that
). When I do this its kind of like a really extreme tunnel vision, I can barely see/hear what I need to, and the rest empty/black/quiet except for the paused dream in the back of my mind. I can also think about things like When and where I am "real world" and if I need to do anything soon without waking up. Also, about four years ago I had the ability to control how long I slept for, using a timer watch I was able to chose to sleep for 5,10,15,20, or 30 minuets (other intervals of 10 acceptable as well up to about a full hour), and wake up on my own with 5-10 seconds on the timer. I still have this ability somewhat, but it is now greatly reduced in both accuracy and range (much more than 20 minuets and I loose control).
Suffice it to say, with all of this wakening up is almost painful if not pre-arranged mentally (luckily, my alarm clock does not fall into this). If someone wakes me up unexpectedly, I seriously will not know when it is, where I am, or even who I am, and it takes quite some time for me to get things straitened out.
So basically, I always have a nice strong Hallucinogen on hand, and I do seriously use it. For instance right now, I start work at 8:00AM, the problem is that I always get at work around 7:30AM, If I leave home any later traffic gets bad and I’m late to work. So for the 20 Minuets where I’m early to work, I set my watch and Fall asleep in my car (My co-workers think I’m quite strange for doing this), and I always have a dream before going into work. Its quite nice really.
I guess if you want to know about some of the dreams I *CAN* Remember, ill be glad to share them, but I think my post is long enough as it is...
