Took me forever to get my new TV Wonder Pro working correctly. Version of media center bundeled with it crashed on launch of TV, so I try downloading newest version... It doens't even want to install. So I downloaded a previous version. Luckily that one works, and now everything's running smoothly. It was worth the few hours of downloading crap to get it working I guess, heh.

And being able to screen capture TV and finally rip TV shows is nice.

ATI's software sucks horribly, and their drivers croak if you try to use it on a multiple video card system.... Fortuantly, thats not a problem for me.... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

You can try using a third-party TV app, like DScalar...

Well everything's working peachy after I reverted to version 8.8 of MMC.

The quality running my satellite into card via S-video and RCA audio is amazing.

This'll make some nice rips of TV shows, heh.

Remote's kind of neat too. Nice to be able to be lazy as hell and be able to start encoding and stuff from the other side of the room.

If NVidia made capture cards though, I'd have went there in a heartbeat.

I'm talking standalone PCI capture cards since I had no reason for forking out the extra cash for a 3D card/capture card combo.

I do the same thing. S-Video sat tv + RCA audio + DVD burner = YES. The quality really is smeggin' amazing.

Wish I had a DVD burner. I'm not sure whether I want to make VCDs to watch on TV or just make some DIVX or XVID movies to watch on PC...

I have a DVD burner. And I have an ATI TV capture device. Burner's lying on the floor next to the 8,4,32 CD burner. The capture device...God knows where the hell I put that thing. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

ATi's TV Wonder Pro software is notorious for sucking, but other than that they're a good company--better performance in all but OGL than nVidia for gaming. They also handle AA and AF better. MUCH Better...frelling ti4400...

GBK... you have problems.

I have dual monitor setup running off of my Radeon 9700 Pro. I also have an ATI TV Wonder VE. No problems with either. Ever. Even in Linux.

What OS were you running? Win98?

Sure, theres no problem in Linux, because you arent using any of ATI's software.

At one point, yes. Then I formatted and went Win2k/Linux. And according to you, "ati's drivers suck in linux".

CM, Ive never once said anything regarding ATI's Linux drivers. Ive never used them.

And besides, ATI has written no Linux drivers for the TV Wonder. They dont need to, the standard bttv driver works like a charm. Hell, it works better than ATI's Windows drivers do.

I thought they had good Windows drivers too, better than detonator with my old GeForce.

Sucks that ATI doesn't make Linux drivers for the 7500, I only get 1000 fps in glxgears [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I have no hope in hell of ever getting Counter-Strike running over 1 fps in WineX [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

What distro are you using? I'm almost certain Gentoo and maybe Slack have ATi drivers for <9200. After that it gets messy.

Oh and also, on GBK's comment that they work better than the Windows drivers--I've never had a problem with stacking and/or installing ATi Windows drivers, yet nVidias DO NOT stack for me. They just screw up, and I had to do a complete removal, then reinstallation of the drivers. Quineg.

I was using Slack 9.1, and am on Mandrake 10 for the moment, but will be going back to Slack prolly this weekend. I'm using XFree's drivers for the Radeon. But Mandrake is so sluggish it's ridiculous. I might give it another try when I reinstall Slack (anyone know when a newer version will be out? The 2.6 kernel kicks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif])

My computer isn't all that lousy, I figured it would be more than enough for CS in WineX (seeing as I can play CS on my old P166MMX which I use as a dedicated Linux server).

P3-750
448 mb SDRAM
Radeon 7500 64mb DDR
staudio Media 7.1 sound card + breakout box (Ice Envy 24 chipset)
40gb (Windows) + 8gb (Linux) HDDs

It's the P3--I'm telling you, P3's and P3 era Celerons suck more than ANY processor yet. Even the old Durons and Athlons (non-XP) were better. Get a P2, or a Duron, something like that, and you'll be in shape.

Meh. You should have gotten a Hauppauge card. WinTV cards are quite nice. Recently traded one off for a motherboard but anyway, I far prefer ATI over nVidia because of 2D quality and price to performance ratio.

I remember over a year ago, when I purchased a new Radeon 7000. Instalation went smoothly, until I rebooted after loading the drivers. WindowsME booted in safe mode, if at all. I was hoping I wouldn't have to reformat my HDD, as nothing was working, after re-installing the drivers repeatedly.

...Then I read my motherboard documentation, and learned that I couldn't use the PCI slot I put it in. I switched slots, and was up and running JK at 80 fps (up from 20fps) 5 minutes later. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

As for that computer, MadCow, it looks nice for that price. The only place I could see for improvement is the processor (P4EE, or better yet, A64 FX), but those with the best processor come in at $5,000.

... GBK you handle the linux, I'll handle the nVidia.

FIRST: nVidia is only better than ATi at the point where you go Linux, because you need driver support. It's a proven fact in benchmarks that nVidia's hardware and software (drivers) is worse than ATi's. If you don't believe me, go to pretty much any benchmarking site (NOT TOMSHARDWARE! THEY HAVE A HORRIBLE BIAS!) and they will tell you what you need to know. I believe HardOCP would probably be a good place to start, though they're more news than benches anymore. I know www.hardfind.com has two benchmarks--of a 9600 PRO and a 5600 ULTRA, my uncle did those and I watched him. The 5600 actually was on-par with his old 9500 PRO. So please, do give your reasoning for this.

P.S. The 9700 Pro=5950 non-ultra. 9800 pro>5950 Ultra. 9800 XT > *.
