ATI drivers took me hours. They never worked.
nVidia drivers took me seconds and they worked.

Go figure. I shouldnt' have to reocmpile the kernel with AGP GART just to install a driver. nVidia's drivers compiled a custom module against the kernel, autamatically.

The first bit is true . . . but the second bit is a damn lie.

Please enlighten us how nVidia is better than ATi when ATi performs better in almost ALL benchmarks (NOT TOMSHARDWARE) in Windows. Yes windows...it's still good for gaming you know.

It's funny how these threads always eventually boil down to ">".

Damn "<" never gets any love.

Buying a video card is still a lose-lose situation. Either you're getting a substandard piece of hardware or you're getting a substandard piece of software.

If you use Linux, yah, but ATi's software in Windows works fine for most. And GBK, you still haven't reasoned your whole ATi<nVidia comment. Please, explain.

Well, firstly, while ATI's drivers might be ok NOW, the rest of their software is still lacking. Namely, the "multimedia center" that ships with their TV Tuners. It pales in comparison to xawtv, on Linux.

Soncondly, Im a biased fanboy.

Meh, we've all been down this road before a million times. Both companies have made wonderful cards at times and both have made horrible ones. ATI has the edge right now in terms of hardware and their Windows drivers are now well up to scratch (not commenting on linux as I don't use it).

Of course this time next year it could be a Nvidia card that is top dog, I dunno *shrug* don't care either.

I use two monitors with a GF4. A friend of mine used 2 monitors with his 9700 Pro, but, for lack of better words, attempting to play a game with 2 desktops raped his computer, video card, monitors, and Windows. So, ha ha, I think I'm going to skip having an ATI video card in a development rig.

I'm with Jaiph. Getting cought up in this fanboy garbage is immature and pointless. Anyone shouting "ATI pwns nVidia!!" will probably be on "nVidia's side" in three months anyway.

I think the bottom line here is that you cannot just say X > Y. Most of the time, both have strengths and weaknesses under different circumstances.

I won't be switching to ATI anytime soon, or at least as long as I am using linux. And I don't see that changing either. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Actually, the main reason I like ATi is because they don't charge less for the same cards as nVidia's. For instance, what's nVidia's 5950(non-ultra) at? What's the ATi 9700 pro at? Same card, for all intensive purposes (meaning they bench about the same). If nVidia adopts this policy, then I'll probably switch over to them. Sorry if I like paying less for video cards that act about the same, guess I must be a fanboy?? :|
